Needs Help: Role Reprisal

(Not sure how to categorise this; the name isn't ambiguous, it's wrong. But there's no choice for that, so I'll just go for "Needs Help".)

Following on from an ATT thread, the trope Role Reprisal concerns performers who return to a role in a series or franchise after an absence.

The problem is that this isn't what a reprisal is.

Merriam-Webster, Dictionary.com, the Cambridge English Dictionary, Collins, Macmillan, Vocabulary.com, the Free Dictionary, Longman, Princeton, Chambers, and multiple other dictionaries both on and offline, in both American and Commonwealth English, define a "reprisal" as a retaliatory attack, particularly in wartime.

Rather, the trope concerns a reprise - a performer reprises the role, and the act of doing so is called a reprise. Merriam-Webster, Dictionary.com, the Cambridge English Dictionary, Collins, Macmillan, Vocabulary.com, the Free Dictionary, Longman, Princeton, Chambers, and multiple other dictionaries both on and offline, in both American and Commonwealth English, agree on this point.

"Reprisal" and "reprise" are not synonyms, though this isn't the first time I've seen them confused with each other; to quote Tabs' post to the ATT thread, "We didn't invent the incorrect use, but we shouldn't promote it, either." A common mistake is still a mistake.

The consensus in the ATT thread appeared to lean towards re-naming the trope Role Reprise, turning Role Reprisal into a redirect (it has far too many inbounds to cut), and changing the wicks (1431 as of this post, possibly including ghost wicks and archive pages) to point to the new name, but that a TRS thread should be started to make it official.

So that's what I'm proposing: re-name it Role Reprise and move the wicks. Thoughts?

Reprising The Role?

Contains 20% less fat than the leading value brand!

I think Role Reprise would work.

Also, if it matters, the misspelled trope name Millitary-Rank Superhero/villain Names was recently changed to Military Rank Names, and the misspelling was noted when the TRS thread was opened by a mod. Note that it had a very small amount of wicks (which isn't the case here), and Not Thriving was its TRS reason.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

I'm torn between those two names... so can we have a title crowner?

Given what's going on in a certain other thread, the option of "do not rename" should probably exist on the crowner.

I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.

I wouldn't mind it renamed to Role Reprise. Note it is one wrong word usage that completely slipped past a lot of people.

As a side note, this trope also had been recently moved to Trivia. As a result, lots of instances on work pages should be moved to a Trivia subpage. Doing the move and rename in the same go should be mandatory.

Role Reprise is a fine name, shorter than Reprising The Role and has the same meaning.

Good to know that "reprisal" is something completely different.

Thanks for starting the crowner, Berrenta!

And StFan raises a good point; a wick migration should also include moving examples from work pages to Trivia/ subpages as needed (unless they're in-universe examples of characters returning to roles they'd previously played in a Show Within a Show), and probably checking for misuse while we're at it.

Well, the crowner has been running for what I believe is the required minimum of 72 hours, and Role Reprise has quite a comfortable lead; should the crowner be called in its favour?

Yep, calling in favor of Role Reprise.

I'll handle the move.

Okay, move done and recorded on the Renamed Tropes page, so now let's change these wicks.

At least we don't have to cut-and-paste to a different area in a list, since all we're doing is changing two ending letters to one.

Down to 1300 wicks as I write; among other things, I've moved all of the wicks in Film/ to the relevant Trivia/ pages, or deleted them entirely if they were potholed from another trope entry. Not sure how active I'll be able to be in the migration for the next few days due to work obligations, but I'll do what I can.

The good news is that it looks as though most of the wicks are already on Trivia/, so they'll just need to be changed to the new name.

EDIT: Now down to 1190 wicks after tackling the A-C pages under Trivia/. Fair to assume that new wicks will be added under the old name for the foreseeable future, but hopefully they'll slow down over time.

I've been chipping away at the wicks as and where I can (including one that was changed back without an edit reason), but I do have a question about which namespaces should include wicks for Role Reprise. Can they go in the descriptions at the beginning of work pages, as long as they're not listed as tropes? (I've been moving them from work pages to Trivia/ subpages - creating them where necessary - wherever I've found them.) What about on Just for Fun/, YMMV, Sugar Wiki/, or Darth Wiki/ pages?

[up] In that case, just changing to the new name is fine. [tup]

[up]I moved them and updated the indexing on the main page. I turned the old locations into redirects until the mods cut them.

Wicks now down to 939, although obviously new wicks are still being added under the old name (a situation that will likely continue... well, indefinitely, probably, if past experience is anything to go on).

I've also moved the old Laconic/ page to the new name and cutlisted it; the cut has gone through, so thanks to the cutlist processors.

As of typing, all 783 remaining wicks are in the following namespaces:

  • Characters/
  • Creator/
  • Recap/
  • Trivia/
  • VideoGame/
  • WMG/
  • WesternAnimation/

EDIT: Now 743; all wicks in the Creator/ namespace have been moved or cut.

I started working on Trivia (I already got A through G), though that's probably the only namespace I'll work on (at least until after Grandma, What Massive Hotness You Have! is dewicked). As Berrenta mentioned, dewicking on Creator/ and Trivia/ pages is just a matter of changing a very small amount of text.

Crown Description:

It was determined that Role Reprisal has an etymology issue: "reprisal" is not related to "reprise", per various dictionaries. Thus, a rename is in order.
