A setting I'm using is rather Battletech inspired in FTL and mechs everywhere, but rather being legitimate weapons of war they are meant to serve as combat as part of a treaty devised for a One Nation Under Copyright style situation. Corporations run things and have become nations unto themselves, to prevent the loss of valuable resources in actual warfare, a document called the "Treaty of Ford" was forged to relegate conflicts of corporate interests and any actual fighting to more contests of champions, with certain amenities in the treaty that gave the Corps a lot of power as a result.

The Mechs were devised by another company as a way of serving as the representation of this, large fighting machines that were arguably cheaper than entire militaries or hiring out terrorists. Especially with a standardization of parts and hard-points for ease of maintenance on the mech units. It's been a few hundred years and a lot of corporate colony worlds have been formed, FTL continues to get faster, and people fight with these as the corps basically became the governments of the galaxy.

Are there any issues with this you can see or will the suspension of disbelief be enough? Any major questions really?

As a “legitimate weapon of war” a mech is basically useless. As a ceremonial/gladiatorial tool, sure.

They should have sent a poet.

Yeah this is building upon the idea that Mechs are Awesome, but Impractical in terms of actual warfare, thus a special kind of war was made with them in mind.
