Anyone trying these techniques for fan fic (and have I got these definitions correct?)

I was reading the Write a Fanfic page, and as I was looking at the Step One and Step Two part of it, it got me thinking on these parts:

Step One: Determine your canon relation

• Alternate Continuity: The work cannot be reconciled with the original in regards to canon or backstory. It effectively lives in a different universe. Sometimes there can be very, very different changes in an Alternate Continuity and the character you know and love could have a very different backstory. Not to be confused with Alternate Universe.

• Alternate History: Perhaps some events happened differently to our world (for example, Henry VIII of England never met Jane Seymour for instance?] or New York had an additional borough that was an island as well as Staten Island (OK, so that's pure Artistic License – Geography, but then again it is Alternate History...)

• Alternate Timeline: Probably synonymous with "What if?"

• Broad Strokes: The events happened, but not exactly in the same way and not every detail. Basically, canon is a guideline, not an exact rule.

• Soft Reboot: The existing cast and setting is retained, but there's some Retooling or Retcon, or maybe an Alternate Timeline. It's a reset, but not the Reset Button.

• Story Reset: "We didn't like what happened from Episodes 12 to 24, so we'll reset it back to Episode 12 and ignore the previous story arc.

Since none of these were on the Write a Fanfic page, I've mentioned them here.

I'm considering using these, but what are the pros and cons of each approach in Fan Fiction? Have I got the definitions correct for the tropes (if anyone more expert in Fan Fiction than me wants to add them to the page, go ahead!)

I'm interested to know.
