It's been a while, but I recall the combat being straight-forward and pretty easy. Probably want a walkthrough on-hand if you're going for 100% completion, though
I got the game today and I'm around the very beginning, so I want to share a couple of thoughts I have so far.
The English voice acting clearly seems like it was done for the sake of translation rather than conviction. I don't think it's the worst I've heard, but my real biggest complaint is how fast everybody talks during the in-game conversations. In the first animated cutscene, they were doing the usual "try to fit the dialogue into the structure of the scene" that's typical for dubbing, so you'd think they'd have a little more freedom to portray their lines in the in-game convos, yet instead everybodyspeedsthroughthescriptlikethey'reworkingoffacaffeinerush. Riffing aside, I actually really like Jesse Camacho's portrayal of Sieg (Who's the main protagonist of this game), and with some tweaking, I think he could be a great voice actor.
Also so far I like Sisuca.
The storm has now resided, the wolf now rests.Okay, things have taken a weird turn. While searching for the Laggarts' Lair, the ravine suddenly turned into a forest. When Sieg tries to point out that something is up, his friends just tell him it's always been a forest, and Sieg eventually agrees with them yet still questions if that really is the case.
This is going to be that kind of game, isn't it?

The storm has now resided, the wolf now rests.Well, I recently got the book that teaches our heroes "The Mark of the Stars", then went to the Mysterious Ruins and died to two Ironripper Rats, netting my first Game Over. I'm back at the Village now, and apparently there's a Marica copycat wielding a big axe.
The storm has now resided, the wolf now rests. So we met up with the Marica "copycat", who's actually Marica from an alternate universe, and now I'm happy that I got this game because I love Cosmic Dramas.

My mom and I just recently ordered Suikoden Tierkreis from Amazon, as I've been curious as to what the game's like. I'm honestly considering livebloging my playthrough of the game on this forum, just for the hell of it.
Any non-spoilery tips that those who have played the game could give me so that I can prepare for this?
