About halfway done with the Charlotte short story; it'd go a lot faster if I didn't have to hold the book in one hand and keep cross-referencing. So far the central action has been a tea party where Damien's younger sister, the Princess, cornered Charlotte and asked her why she was A) useless and B) not pregnant yet.

This is all very Regency romance-ish.

It's been fun.

Isn't Charlotte like 16? >.>

At this point, yes. The Princess is only a little older than her (and kind of a jerk), it seems.

It's been fun.

[up][up]Exactly, and she isn't getting any younger either.

Well, this is the first translation piece I've ever done that I'll have to tag with suicidal ideation. I should be able to finish it tonight, but I'll want at least another day for an edit pass before I post it.

It's been fun.

Okay, it's ready to go now. I don't want to post the link here, so PM me if you want it.

The film Eternity and the Automated Memory Doll will be projected exceptionally in French theaters during this month, as a homage to the Kyoani fire victims. There are a few screenings in my city. surprised

Definitely go see it if you get the chance. It's very sweet - and once the film is out, I can translate the side story that came with the ticket about Isabela.

It's been fun.

Back from the theater.

…Welp, it's useless to resist. We all cried like babies by the end. And I mean all four people in the theater. tongue The three girls in front of me had driven 50 miles to see the movie − a mom and her daughters. And it was almost literally a midnight screening. Twas fun to chat with them.

Now about the movie. Gigguk once said that as a character, Violet worked much better when she was a vector to tell other characters' stories… and she really does. The OVAs and movies are all a bit muddy regarding which stage of her Character Development they happen in, but the characters she interacts with are always compelling in their own ways − Taylor especially is criminally adorable in this one; it's almost refreshing to have such a chipper and carefree character in VE (sad as her backstory is). I was slightly less of a fan of Amy but still… I don't know if that fog during the waltz scene was my tears or the yuri filter I had forgotten to turn off. Either way, it was beautiful. But also bittersweet. sad That shot of Amy looking up at the bird on the blue ceiling while being trapped in a whirlwind she couldn't go against came back to hit hard when she ended up becoming what she didn't want to by the end.

^For what it's worth, the additional mini-novella confirms that Isabela is actually deeply in love with Violet. It also suggests that her husband is possibly gay himself; either way, he's sorry for Isabela and has no intention of bothering her.

It's been fun.

Oh, so it wasn't just my imagination. I tend to be wary because Kyoani's kinda infamous for keeping things strictly at the subtext level in their Romantic Two Girl Friendships.

No, I definitely get you. I wasn't really a fan of KyoAni's works before Violet (I know Hyouka is popular, but it put me straight to sleep), but they did an amazing job distilling Violet to its best elements. The tie-in novella is written by the original author of the series, too, so it's as official as it's getting.

It's been fun.

So the movie is yet again pushed back (it was supposed to come out on April 24) due to you-know-what.

Talk about a cursed project. sad

On the other hand, the OVA (Eternity and Auto Memories Doll) is available on Netflix now, so that's something.

It's been fun.

Finally saw the movie today in theaters.

…Goddammit. Why. WHY does this series always make me cry? I know all of its dirty little tricks by now, but I can never hold back the fucking tears.

I don’t know what it is. Maybe the warmth, humanity and love that seeps through every frame.

Glad Violet was reunited with Gilbert eventually. Though I can’t quite shake off the discomfort of knowing Gil was in love with Violet ever since she was 14… or maybe before that. Oh well. tongue

God it’s good to sit in front of a big screen again.

Watched it last month... I completely lost it and bawled when Yurith died and Gilbert reunited with Violet. As for his love for her, I interpreted it as more of a paternal love that became more cemented as romantic by the time of the film. I also love how the movie tied into the granddaughter of Anne, because her episode in the anime was so memorable and iconic of the series.

Overall, such a beautiful film and solidified VE as one of my favorites... and Violet as one of my favorite anime characters for her growth and empathy which was highlighted so much in the movie.

Yeah, that connexion was a nice touch. I wished we had seen old Violet at the end, but I guess it’s better if she stays as a sort of legend. We did get to see old Iris, so there’s that. smile

Regarding Ulysse… The dialogue seemed to imply that he was in love with Lucas but I’m not sure if that was the case or just another case of Japanese ambiguity…

I think the ribbon seen at the end implied Violet lived a long life there... and the post-credits image of her and Gilbert was enough for me to assume they lived happily ever after.

Personally I interpreted as a very close friendship. But I watched it with English subtitles so interpretation from the original Japanese or other language subtitling may be different.

Hmm. I just finished the movie, and I'm... really not sure how I feel about it. I just don't really know.

Edit: Thought about it some more. I think I didn't like it.

The whole series was about Violet learning to move on from Gilbert's loss, and learning how to grow into an actual person from the state the war and Gilbert left her in. I thought it was a silly decision for him to somehow be alive, but they made it work well enough... but still. They can have him say "I'm not your commanding officer anymore" as many times as they like, but after writing her letter to him, Violet has no more lines that aren't just sobbing or saying "Major". It doesn't feel like she's grown and is returning to find a more equal relationship with him; it feels like she's slipped right back into her worst old mindset. Gilbert has his own share of traumas, sure, but it was weird of him to say he loved Violet as a woman when he was dying and it's still kind of weird now.

It's clear that Violet is happy in the end credits, which is good to see, and the stamp was a great little touch, but Gilbert worked much, much better as an unattainable part of Violet's past, a question she would never really know the answer to, but one she could think about while she learns who she wants to be... instead of a living man who is, frankly, right to feel guilty about how he treated Violet, and one whose love doesn't feel like it has any real substance to it toward Violet as a person rather than as what he put on her when she was still broken and vulnerable.

So, the author of Violet Evergarden released a new novel last year which got no.2 on this year's Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi bunkobon ranking. Its titled: "Shunkashuuto no Daikosha: Haru no Mai" (Agent of the Four Seasons: Spring Dance)

https://dengekibunko.jp/special/syunkasyuutou/

Basically, it's set in a fictionalized version of Japan, where the responsibilities to manifest the four seasons are given to four humans. Each "Agents" also has a bodyguard protecting them. The story mainly focus on the Agents of Spring and Winter and their bodyguards.

Agent of Spring is Hinagiku Kayou and her bodyguard is Sakura Himedaka, Agent of Winter is Rousei Kantsubaki and his bodyguard is Itecho Kangetsu

The four of them have known each other since childhood. In addition, Rousei and Hinagiku are in love with each other. Likewise, Itecho and Sakura as also in love. Sadly, one day Hinagiku is kidnapped for 10 years, which caused Spring to disappear from the country for 10 years, as well. Sakura, in addition to blaming herself, also blamed both Rousei and Itecho which lead to her having a love-hate relationship with them. But finally, Hinagiku returns to the rejoice of Sakura, Rousei and Itecho. Sakura then resolves to take vengeance against their enemies. Rousei, while happy that Hinagiku returned, also feels conflicted since he also blamed himself for Hinagiku's kidnapping, that's not mentioning his still very strong feeling for Hinagiku. The novels pretty much deals with their complicated feeling for one another.

The current arc "Spring Dance", is comprised of 2 volume and the second volumes seems to be more action-oriented than the first.

While I haven't read the main novel yet, I've read some of the bonus stories which seems to be set after the main novel story and I have to say, I really like the story. In fact, I think I like this more than Violet lol. Rousei x Hinagiku is pretty darn cute but Itecho x Sakura is also an absolute blast.

The novel is currently rising in popularity in Japan and a sequel has already been planned. I really hope this will be popular enough to get an anime.
