It was different but I'd argue it just doesn't work as a sequel to TFA. All the major plot threads and sequel hooks from that movie were just abandoned.
See that would make sense. Disney seems to be against that.

Also getting betrayed and killed by an apprentice on purpose so the latter can take over his empire is something that already happened to him.

This song needs more love.Hey, just a reminder that posting just to complain is against forum rules. Linking to this thread again:
Having conversations taken over by negativity is not fun for the participants, and drives people away.
If you want to criticize, make sure you're doing it in a way that isn't just complaining. The mods have shut down threads that have devolved into complaining before, like The Emoji Movie thread and the thread about Sony Animation. This quote from the latter says it all:
These movies are made for flimsy casuals, not expanded universe authorities. Snoke is Snoke.
The criticism being levied here is being pretty fair, though. We are discussing execution, specific elements, ways to improve. No one yet has said anything just like "fuck this movie".
"All you Fascists bound to lose."I don't know about that. I guess it's waxed and waned, but I recall a lot of "fucking sucks" statements and calling Johnson a hack, especially when the first leaks/spoilers were posted. Not to mention a couple of tropers speculating that those giving good reviews were being bribed, and one person who seemed kind of happy about Johnson evidently receiving death threats.

Oh I'm perfectly aware of that and I don't think for a minute that they're actually the same person. I'm just amused by the similarities and wonder if there's some inspiration.

This song needs more love.We have been a bit too vitriolic but I think for the most part We've tried to present criticism with substance and reasoning instead of just saying the movie is trash.
x4
We got an entire trilogy the hack of a director is making in addition to episode IX.
These are just a few examples of the sort of complaining that gets threads locked after they take over the discussion. I'm just reminding everyone to be careful since threads have been locked before when the people on the thread complained too much.

Thanks for the heads up/reminder
Also, lots of circle jerking about how pointless this movie is.
I'll address the supposedly pointlessness of the movie in a future post, since I really want to discuss it.
Saw it and liked it.

I had a thought before TLJ came out of, if Rey was a random person, that she'd get adopted by someone from the old guard and have a family that way ^^ Now it seems like the only one from the OT left to do that would be Chewbacca or C-3PO though XD
The Protomen enhanced my life. She could be adopted by Leia. I guess that would make her an Organa rather than a Skywalker, though.
Ceterum censeo Morbillivirum esse eradicandum.I did suggest awhile ago that Luke could have adopted her before he becomes one with the force
New theme music also a boxYes, but that's a bit too late now. Or is it? Can a Force Ghost adopt?
Ceterum censeo Morbillivirum esse eradicandum.Adopted by a force ghost not a sentence I imagined I would end up typing..but yeah

New theme music also a boxI wonder if Luke's role in IX will reference the original idea that Obi-Wan and Yoda came back from the netherworld to help Luke fight the Emperor.
The Protomen enhanced my life. What "impresses" me most in this discussion - beside some serial complainers that remind me to never become a huge fan or something, lest I devolve into a terrible killjoy - is how several people base it on leaks and spoilers while not having seen the movie yet.
Come to think of it, Snoke in TFA and TLJ is very similar to Palpatine in ESB and Ro TJ. A powerful villain who has already established an army and a dominion by the time the story rolls, first being seen only through holo-communication, then appearing in person but doing effectively little beside sitting on a throne, talking and being eeeevil, showing a little of his power, then being suddendly killed by his right-hand man (although the ultimate outcomes are different). And when Star Wars was just a single trilogy, did we really care about Palpatine's origins, motives, and how he came to power, which we learned only many years later? Sometimes a villain just needs to be there to be a menace, and little else. However. You do not say things like "Snoke is not someone we already knew, Snoke was watching from the shadows for a long time, et cetera", show him being capable of Force-choking people from sideral distances even more than Vader, then have such anticlimax with him, and expect people to not be pissed, because you made them genuinely think they'd get, if not a detailed background, at least a minute to know better of Snoke, rather than him being just your basic Star Wars supervillain that was needed to move things forward.
I appreciated the "final fight": even if there are no winners, if anything because one of the duelers turns out not even being there, Luke has utterly humiliated Kylo, has passed the torch, and will live on as a legend - you can bet some of the eyewitnesses will tell of the Skywalker who came out unscathed from a barrage of fire, made Supreme Leader Ren lose his shit, and then just disappeared, all while the survivors of the Resistance who would eventually reignite the light of hope in the Galaxy escaped (and even the equally legendary Millennium Falcon was there). For all the years of bitterness he lived because of the consequences of a single, terrible moment of weakness (but that only accelerated what was going to happen anyway, so he was too hard on himself), Luke got a good closure.
I loved that Luke defeated yet another dark sider without using violence.
He didn't defeat him at all, though. Kylo Ren still has the First Order under his command, the Resistance is like ten people, and they have no fleet, and Kylo's already proven he can slaughter a building full of Jedi by himself.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."He didn't achieve his immediate goal there. I call that a success
I think it's a 'hope is all you need' thing, especially given the ending shows new Force-sensitives and seeds of rebellion.
...Oh no what if they 'kill' the Millennium Falcon too by blowing it up in the next movie XD
The Protomen enhanced my life.Well that's not condescending at all. There's nothing wrong with having strong opinions on something as long as you're not being a piece of shit about it.

Find the Light in the Dark
The Sith Emperor from the Old Republic era. His whole deal is that he can lose his physical body but can come back by possessing someone else's.
It's been a pet theory of mine for a while that he and Snoke are the same person.
