Well, this was gruesome. If someone had any doubts that Abyss is not to be fucked with, there should be no now.
Nanachi might just instantly became my favorite character. I lover her voice.
The crazy part about all this is that the porcupine creature (Tama-chan) is completely herbivorous. Supplementary material states that it primarily feeds off of algae collecting on the goblet structures. It just happens to be so insanely territorial that it ended up becoming the untouchable king of the Fourth Layer anyway.
"When I was alive, I was a tender soul. Now, I am tenderloin." -Nanako (Senryuu Shoujo)Just drive-by posting to say that I was physically perturbed by Riko's condition in episode 10, and I've seen some shit in my field of work.
That just the amazing thing isn't it? Compared to more action and horror heavy shows from the past 15 years, this was barely gore. It's just pints of blood, an impaled and swollen hand, and a broken arm that almost gets cut off. No decapitations, no disembowelment, no flaying, no mass murders, no (direct) cannibalism. It's not even edge. Just blood and two crying children. Things that, unfortunately, aren't an uncommon sight together in real life, even in less perilous situations.
It's so simple, but it was handled so well that it outdoes the vast majority of things done for shock value and hackneyed attempts at "depth".

but maybe somewhereI think it's more shocking precisely because it's remains within the realm of realistic violence. A broken arm can happen to anyone; being decapitated or obliterated in Ludicrous Gibs, not so much.
You know what it reminds me of? That movie about the guy who climbed down the Grand Canyon and had to cut off his own arm with a knife after it was blocked by a rock. I'll never watch that fucking movie again.
Flippé de participer à ce grand souper, je veux juste m'occuper de taper mon propre tempo.I think it's so shocking because of how abrupt it is. So far it's been a pretty light show about plucky kids going on an adventure and overcoming the obstacles with guts and quick thinking. Sure, they talked a lot about how dangerous the Abyss is and how it's not a joke, but so far it's been only talk. Then this episode came out, and thing went really badly really fast. It's like a bucket of cold water for bother characters and viewers "holy shit, it's that kind of a show after all!"
For what it's worth, the optimism and sense of exploration remains. Just remember that this is still only the Fourth Layer.

"When I was alive, I was a tender soul. Now, I am tenderloin." -Nanako (Senryuu Shoujo)Speaking of exploration, I'm really struggling not to read the scans further right now. >.< But I'll wait for the end of the anime at least.
Flippé de participer à ce grand souper, je veux juste m'occuper de taper mon propre tempo.Honestly in terms of the gore in Episode 10 I did squirm. Now keep in mind I can deal with animated gore easily (And even CGI gore in live action movies, I dealt with the harpoon scene in Logan) but the fact that it was on for almost 15 minutes was what made things so bad for me. If it was 3 minutes long I wouldn't of cared much, the slow pacing (As well as the hallucinations and voice acting) really helped show how vile the Abyss is.
It's like a Level 10 going into a Level 80's only dungeon at this point onwards.
EDIT: I've seen comparisons from this to Madoka's episode 3, I disagree. It was already dark before this but it got darker. I'll compare it to Berserk's Eclipse (Only without the rape)

Some s ago: Eh, I'd disagree about the danger being all talk up to this point. It's just that this was the point where these two couldn't avoid injury and near death of some sort. I'd chalk it up to these two being really good together, good enough that they could get through what other delvers died from.
Speaking of, somewhere online, Made In Abyss was described as, "Strawberry Marshmallow meets Berserk."
Nearly everything bad that happened in this episode was telegraphed right from the pre-intro scene to the title screen up to the point where they meet that thing that came from Miyazaki's dreamscape.

but maybe somewhereI'd gotten the sense of the danger of the Abyss from earlier in the series, but this was definitely the first episode where it was really hammered home how brutal it could be. Having a 15 minute long segment wherein a child first gets stabbed through the hand, realizes she's been fatally poisoned, slowly succumbs to the poison, then begins bleeding from every part of her face, hallucinates, has to have her arm broken for amputation while concious did a good job of showing why the depths were feared, and this is only the fourth of six.

Flippé de participer à ce grand souper, je veux juste m'occuper de taper mon propre tempo.Alright, awesome.
Now consider that this recent episode scared manga readers back into being series newbies even when they saw it coming.
Now watch those chapters be adapted.
People underestimate how much luck actually factors into delving success. Consider the possibility that for every hour they're in the Abyss, someone will have died, and no body will be left behind because it's been eaten by something.
Skill and experience only really start to build up at black whistle level, and even then you're still highly likely to die down there. Habolg is one of the best black whistles in Orth. I don't see him surviving an encounter with the piercer without a lost limb or two.
But that's not to say they and white whistles aren't skilled or experienced or talented. It's just that they're also incredibly lucky. Orth's job scaling is outpaced by the dangers of the depths.

but maybe somewhereSaw episode 1. It's almost perfect. The way the children are drawn takes some getting used to, but the soundtrack is totally my jam.
My angry rant blog! You read ahead, huh... Good freaking luck.
The studio would have to completely screw up the music choice (like, ''March of the Gladiators" bad) to not do that part justice.
"When I was alive, I was a tender soul. Now, I am tenderloin." -Nanako (Senryuu Shoujo)That, and/or give a certain character the voice of G.I. Joe's bad guy.

Watch Symphogear…What is that girl doing to the guy on the ground? It doesn't look like a heart massage.

Flippé de participer à ce grand souper, je veux juste m'occuper de taper mon propre tempo.Looks up the Room on fire scene from Community.
Watch SymphogearAh, such calmness was needed after last week. Nanachi is a welcome source of levity and Reg continues to be a good boy.
Hmm, the sense of adventure is still there, but not even half as strong. Why is tha— oh. Right. Most of it is lying on that bed, drained from last week's horror.
And— oh look. The character that I've been waiting for. The pink, shambling, warped mass of Ugly Cute. Everything revolving around that beautiful creature will determine my final feelings on this anime.
but maybe somewhereGod I love Nanachi's voice. <3 The cuteness, the carefreeness, the sarcasm, everything's there. And it's nice to hear it in the ending song too now. 'Naah. Even Mitty's voice is unbearably cute.
A leisurely episode, maybe a bit too much some might say. As often in this series, I couldn't believe 20 minutes had passed when the credits rolled… It's like the Abyss itself, it distorts our sense of time. But, err, thanks for showing us the last 4 minutes of last week's episode again, anime?
Still a treat for the eyes and ears.

Flippé de participer à ce grand souper, je veux juste m'occuper de taper mon propre tempo.Well, at least it added a bit of Nanachi's perspective on those moments. Like really, some people thought they came in out of nowhere and that the entity Reg detected in that side-hole was the hate-beast. Well hopefully this clears things up!
And yes, Mitty is a ray of sunshine, which is good, because our previous source of that ain't waking up yet.
but maybe somewhere
According to some reading around, a lot of manga readers felt like they were seeing these events for the first time again. Like, they knew it was coming, but they just didn't expect it to be adapted so we'll. So very well.
I think the fact that the camera lingered on Riko's face with her... affected eyes contributed to that. That was not something you would notice in a grayscale image.
but maybe somewhere
