About localizers/translators not having a say in which spelling to use. That's kinda like hiring an architect to design a building for you, then telling him he has no saying in how the roof should be designed. It's not simply hiring labor to get a job done. It's hiring advisors and people who are knowledgeable in a certain area to provide their input. You're paying these people to translate the game and localize it, so you should probably let the native (or at least proficient) speakers of the language being localized into have a say in how it's localized.
One of the localizers had a little mini-panel at AX where he actually explained why they in the end decided to go with "Mash" (it's a biblical name, just more obscure than "Matthew"), but "Altria" had no such justification.
But then this is all more me being critical of the company's strange stubbornness in names and localizations. I could care less about what title ends up being used on the wiki.

One thing regarding the Fate/Grand Order issue (as a point against the made-up name spelling, specifically) that I'm not sure if it was brought up yet: The official localization for the names of William Shakespeare and Musashibou Benkei are "William Shakespear" (losing the final "e") and "Masashibou Benkei". Even in FGO there are unjustified mistakes in name spellings.

Just watched Fate/Zero. They use Arturia exclusively in the sub-titles, and it is in the LN translation. Works well with Arthur. It's important to note that it too would be "アルトリア" (Arutoria) in katakana, since there is a "tsu" but no "tu" sound (though I suppose you could theoretically make "Aruturia" with "アルトゥリア", though "トゥ" is rare.) I'm fine with Arturia or Artoria, but Altria is an abomination.

I wasn't really talking about what name is used in Japanese, that was a mistake on my part. Rather, what I meant to say is that thanks to how its pronounced by the Japanese (ARUTORIA) it could either be seen Artoria or Altria thanks to both sounding identical to each other in said language. To which, most people would automatically assume Artoria due to Saber's identity. Even I did initially until I saw another spelling (Altria) in side material.
