Hey there. This is the discussion thread for the reboot of Dawn of a New Age, a roleplay about teenagers getting superpowers and all the shenanigans that come from that. It takes place in Oldport, Rhode Island - a great place to live.

Here's the signup thread, if you're interested. But right now, we're here to discuss things. So discuss away!

Here's an icebreaker: Relationships beween the cast? As in, do our characters know each other, or are friends with some?

I'm very open to PC friendships, though I don't think Zia would start off with too many friends.

I don't know if Dan should start off knowing the cast — however, if they do know each other, maybe they're not aware of each others powers?

Pending on Stratofarius' word on the subject, but I think a number of the characters would know of Hans, but I doubt he would have many friends.

@B Gob: I'm down with Terry being friends with Zia due to their taste of music

I've a feeling Dan would meet the cast by doing something stupid. Like trying to race a sports car or something.

@Lt.BGob: You down with continuing our friendship from the old thread? Or would you prefer a blank slate? tongue

I'm also open to PC friendships, though they'd probably be 'casual' friendships since Ciro doesn't often have the time or money to hang out. I don't think he'd really be known outside of his classmates or friends.

Oh hey, there's a question; are people who're the same age generally going to be in the same classes, or is there a different structure in place?

See, I feel like I might've hamstrung myself in terms of relationships, because Simon strikes me as the sort who'd be more likely to make bullies than make friends. I suppose people could try making friends with him. They'd just have to be pretty persistent in clambering over his grouchiness wall.

Just a note on relationships — Dan is straight like all my other characters and me personally, simply because I have no idea to write it any other way.

Plus, if I can't get invested in a relationship because I don't feel that way about that gender, how could the character get invested in it too?

@sven: Yeah, a musical-friendship of some kind could be fun with Terry. Since Zia does some tutoring maybe they met through that?

@Whizzerd: Definitely happy to continue the friendship with Ciro, mate! grin

I think it would be easier for people to know each other if there was some frequent class overlap in year levels but I'm kinda impartial.

Wassup, party people. ^^;

I'd imagine Hyeon would have something of a reputation, even if it's just "that guy", so feel free to know of him by that measure (or not!) if you'd like to. On a slightly more involved note, would anyone be interested in either being or having been in his band? I know we have a few more musical types kicking around.

If I had that kind of power, I'd have dropped a meteor on your house ages ago~

There used to be a wrong thread post here. It's gone now, so here's something else instead.

Okay, so, Ivy. I'd think that most people at this point would probably know her more as "Mrs. Havilland's daughter" rather than an actual person. Perhaps her mother's infamous among the lowerclassmen for being rather strict, but aside from that, she herself might not be particularly noticeable. Pretty, maybe, but too out there for anyone to care.

Ivy would probably be aware of the more popular/infamous students, but most of her relationships would be built during this RP.

Also, most important: because it's ripe for drama, I'd think her unrequited love would be aimed towards another player character. I just haven't decided who yet.

Actually, on the subject of popularity, Dan would be pretty much unknown. He usually keeps his private life... private. But he is somewhat respected for his soundness of mind.

@sven: Probably music tutoring, I'd say. Though she is good at maths, so that's an option too if you think that's more likely.

@Enirboreh: If you mean introducing him to the other characters, are you gonna do that before or after the onset of powers?

On that note, when-abouts can we expect our characters to get said crazy powers?

Hey guys. I'm answering all your questions tomorrow. It's just that today I had to bunker down and develop a long Power Point presentation.

Anyway. Tomorrow I'll also talk some more about the things that make Oldport special, the GMNP Cs and a word about flashbacks and stuff. See y'all there.

Just to clarify something — I am usually out of the house 9 to 12 am on a Sunday, and 7 to 9:30 pm on Thursdays. Just to give you an idea on what days I won't be active. Plus I'll be on holiday for a week starting on the 6th, so I'll be gone then too.

I'm fine with Valerie not knowing any of the other PCs right off the bat. It'd even make some kind of sense, considering she's currently the youngest PC.

That being said, I'm definitely open if anybody else wants to have their PC know her at the start, or at least know of her. That's also not unfeasible, what with her being a practicing actress and all (and a particularly hammy one at that).

@Enirboreh: the characters will start the RP powerless- the actual empowering event will take place right at the start of the RP.

@whizzerd: Same age, same classes, up to you really.

@Lt.B Gob: like the original RP, it'll be right at the start.

Here's a bunch of info!

  • Flashbacks, Flashforwards and You!
    • One of the coolest things about the original RP was that the GM often engaged in flashbacks and flashforwards, some of them meant to provide little clues, some of them meant to develop side characters, but all of them pretty interesting. I'm continuing this tradition, and I might even open it up for you guys to do it too. But remember: flashbacks aren't fun if they happen all the time and don't complement the current plot.
    • Flashforwards, however, are reserved to me. And to answer the preemptive "wait, if your flashforward has my character, haven't you set his/her future in stone?" question, no. The future is what you make it. Consider the flashforward merely someone saying 'what if things keep going the way they're going?' and writing something from that.

  • Some Fun Facts about Oldport, Rhode Island! (By Mayor Goodman)
    • It's four hours away from New York and two hours away from Boston! That's so close!
    • There are approximately twenty five thousand people living in Oldport. That's a lot of people!
    • Oldport has one of the oldest radio stations in the US: WOX 98.5 AM. It's online now, and one of Oldport's favorite radio shows is Sims' Sensational Section, where radio host Sensational Sims presents his favorite music tracks, reads letters and takes calls live. It's so original!
    • Richard Nixon once had a home here! It's one of those mansions near the coast? Which one? How am I supposed to know that?
    • During the summer, Oldport is home to a bunch of festivals that bring all the young dudes in. I'm talking the Jazz Festival, International Film Festival and the Oldport Folk Festival. That's the one where Bob Dylan performed in a fake wig and beard in 2002! Remember that?
    • One of the oldest neighborhoods of Oldport, Falstaff, was recently demolished and turned into a trendy tourist hotspot. The former family favorite Oldport Museum of Oddities is now an even more family favorite high-end luxury hotel with amazing views of the ocean!
    • Though we have a bunch of secondary schools, the best one is Rogers High School. One of the guys who programmed Facebook studied there! I also don't know which one.

  • Meet the Cast: (Some of the) Rogers High School Staff
    • Superintendent Perez: Mr. Perez actually studied in Rogers High School and returned to his beloved Oldport after majoring in Language Studies at NYU. He's mostly at meetings, but he'll often make a point to show up at important school events like football games and spelling bees.
    • Principal Shooter: This is actually Mr. Shooter's third school as Principal, and he came highly recommended from Hightown, Connecticut. Mr. Shooter's work in education has earned him an award from the NASSP, the National Association of Secondary School Principals. His mother was born in Oldport, but she moved out at twenty years old due to "a lack of stuff to do around here."
    • Mr. Moore: Teaches English and Literature. Nobody knows how old he actually is- he looks fifty-ish, but some students got hold of a picture of a twenty year old Mr. Moore dated from 1942- but he has a deep love of literature the likes of which is only matched by his deep disdain of students' natural disinterest in literature. One can often find him obsessively encouraging students who show a modicum of interest in Shakespeare whilst ignoring those that accidentally made fun of Ancient Greek writers for 'sounding weird.'
    • Ms. Simone: Teaches History, mainly American History. Her favorite part of history is the 70's, and it's clear she blames herself from not having lived through it. Tries really hard to make her classes more 'fun', but more often than not just comes across as a little bit dated. Once spent an entire day dressed as an American revolutionary and only stopped speaking in 'ye olde English' after she saw one student covertly recording her.
    • Mr. Claremont: Teaches Biology. Is known for being a fast talker and for not letting students catch up to his train of thought. Many 'prim and proper' students crack and look for ways to cheat on his tests because he asks questions about subjects he never mentioned in class. Is very fond of footnotes. Still writes extensively in a diary, detailing everything he did on a particular day.
    • Ms. Havilland: Teaches Chemistry. Mr. Claremont has often said that Ms. Havilland brain should be stored for future generations. Up to interpretation on that one.
    • Ms. Wilson: Runs the Computer lab, a job she seemingly took solely so she could teach an elective about Game Design. The youngest of the teachers, Ms. Wilson has somehow turned into the go-to adult you can talk to about things you don't want other adults to know. She once ran a campaign at the D&D Club and became the stuff of legend.
    • Ms. Brayne: Teaches some Music electives. Someone once secretly recorded her and put her stuff up on Soundcloud. That someone had a very stern conversation with Principal Shooter.
    • Mr. Morrison: Teaches Philosophy, Poetry, and other members of the 'worst classes' club. Nobody knows if he's full of himself or if he's just that smart. Some students like him so much, they have gained these cult-like qualities, often asking for his advice on anything. He once mentioned that there was a picture on the web somewhere of him cosplaying as Professor X, and the whole school is still looking for it.
    • Mr. Lieber: The oldest teacher in Rogers, he has some writing electives, but most of his classes end up turning into him telling stories about how he wrote a lot of stuff when he was younger. He really likes hearing himself talk. He also comes up with fake words to emphasize some stuff he says.

Ah, so they start powerless. Forgot about that.

I do that a lot.

Anyway, in that case, Dan would definitely not be popular. Ah well, I'm an improviser, so I'll come up with something once the actual game starts.

So, in the actual empowering event, will it affect the characters depending on what they're doing? Like on CW's Flash, where the characters gained powers depending on the accident that happened to them when the accelerator exploded?

Now I can't help but wonder whether our good buddy Jerry is alive in this continuity.
