anza, I nuked one of the two threads before actually looking at them, and of course it was the actual thread and not the duplicate.

Short and sweet: the pic was changed from this to the current:

The current look more like Spell My Name With An S instead of pronounciation trouble, though.

^ Agreeing. Current does not show the trope at hand. From the old one, panel 2+3 would suffice.

Yeah, the current one we have (the "history of the entire world, i guess" one) is a lot better, and demonstrates it a lot better.

Also, the old one doesn't have any relations to hiring a samurai.

I still think 9.1/original is garbage. It illustrates nothing since the apparently mispronounced version of "sword" and the correct one are spelled exactly the same without any indication that it's wrong, so you can't even tell how he's supposedly mispronuncing it.

It wouldn't even pass as a page quote.

Both versions of "sword" being spelled exactly the same is the point of the illustration. The creator is not giving us any clue on how it's pronounced correctly. However, one could argue that's it's a weak example because most people would know how to pronounce "sword". An example where characters discuss the pronunciation of an Anime name in English would probably be best illustrating the use of this trope.

Agreed that the current image does not illustrate the trope at all. The trope is about when the spelling of a name fails to give any clues on its intended pronunciation. The image is not depicting this; the video is just jumbling the word as a whole (pronunciation AND spelling simultaneously) because the same English exoticizing vowel is repeated three times in the name "Majapahit".

While I disagree that 9 doesn't illustrate the trope, I still think it's a poor image because the image doesn't really add anything to the dialogue. Yeah, we see the sword, but that's not really adding anything. I mean, if the bird guy's expression changed while being confronted about the pronunciation or after realizing his mistake, that would be slightly better.

Also, I don't think the current illustrates the trope, so I'm saying pull regardless of replacement.

Basically [tdown] to OP, 9, and current.

I kind of like it because it doesn't really add anything. The trope is about something not being there, so for me that fits.

I am voting revert.

I feel the Sword/Sword picture better illustrates the concept, because while we all know how sword is pronounced we don't actually know how the bird is saying it, so it is a quicker reference to the concept of "How is the written word written out loud". The current one just looks like someone failing to spell something correctly, and without the audio there is no way to know these where his attempts at saying majapahit.

Also Nedroid is to good for this sinful earth and editing it is akin to the most vile act you can think of. Times two.

Please.

Personally, I'm in favor of reversion. The current image (as much as I like it) is devoid of context that would not appear like it is just bad spelling.

I'm actually both the one who added original image and replaced it. I like the shortened Nedroid one more, though.

Yeah, I think revert is the way to go.

Anyway, should or should not we move the Majahapit Majapahit image to Spell My Name With An S? The image there is good, but I think the Mapahajit Majapahit image is better.

I say we revert to the Mahajapit Majapahit image, or at the very least pick a different image. The Nedroid image doesn't at all illustrate the trope because the supposed mispronunciation of "sword" is spelled exactly the same as the "correct" pronunciation, thus, since there is no distinction between them, it doesn't work. The Mapahajit Majapahit image is a better illustration of the trope, as it actually distinguishes between the mispronunciations.

^ But the Majapahit image shows a misspelling not a mispronunciation. We don't want to attract such examples to the page.

Somebody when through with the swap already. Do we need a crowner still?

@mariofan Illustrates it perfectly, showing how wildly different pronunciations can be extracted from the same spelling by using different pronunciation conventions.

[up][up] I think it's too straight to the point and lacking the "witty" part of Clear Concise Witty. Can't argue it's the clearest one so far, though. If there's no better suggestion, I choose that.
