I'm curious as to why I liked Guardians 2 better than Avengers 2 even though they have a pretty similar jokes-per-second ratio and frequency of "funny line blows dramatic moment". I guess because Guardians 2 didn't take itself as seriously? It is a movie that outright goes "screw it, teleporting asteroids field and space-carrot obsessed assassin", whether as Ultron had to be simultaneously taken seriously and not taken seriously. Maybe it even helped Guardians's case, since plot points like the Second-Act Breakup between Peter and Gamora were absolutely expected so they might as well turn it into a Cheers meta-gag.

[up] I would say it is because Got G Vol 2 is thematically stronger. Ao S has themes, but there are so many of them, it doesn't quite stick the landing and the overstuffed plot doesn't help. Got G Vol 2 focusses on the family theme and pulls it together beautifully in the end during the father and son scene. A strong ending can make all the difference in the world.

I like Drax's increased jokiness. It feels like he's more comfortable with the group and has grown beyond his revenge obsessed broody self. It also feels like he's overcompensating to either fit in or make it clear to the others that he's more comfortable with them

It definitely overall feels like a Drax who is more at peace with where he's at

Guardians 2 is a better executed film. Age of Ultron squandered several of the good ideas they had, and it turned out those ideas were critical to the film's cohesion.

I felt like there were at least 3-4 moments in the film where I went "he's not that stupid/clueless. Drax in the first movie would have understood that."

Some of the jokes with him were hilarious. Others, well I didn't find them all that funny. And at times, much like the rest of the film, I felt like they were trying a bit too hard in places.

Still good overall though.

Drax reminiscing about his family with Mantis is hands down my favorite scene in the film. Everything about it is just beautiful, from the scenery and music to Drax's serene-yet-mournful stare as Mantis breaks down from the sheer, raw grief he feels.

Rocket says in the first movie that Drax's species is entirely literal, and I think that applies to honesty as well, both in general and emotionally. Drax may not be good at outwardly expressing things other than laughter and rage, but he feels emotions like an oncoming hurricane and never pretends that they are something they aren't, nor does ever even think to hide his thoughts and feelings from others if they ask - and sometimes even if they don't.

I loved the scene with Mantis as well. But having seen the movie twice, I still think that the overplayed his stupidity in some places, and the comedy with him was more hit and miss this time around imo (same with the whole movies for that matter, it's a much more inconsistent package that the first one was for me). When it's better, it's far better. When it's worse, it's significantly worse.

So, any songs anybody hopes to see in Vol. 3?

I really want this, fits right into GOTG's funky, psychadelic repertoire, and tonally perfectly fits a character trying to find themselves.

Especially in a scene with Adam Warlock, maybe exploring his powers and trying to find his purpose while amid gorgeous, otherworldly animation/cgi scenes.

Now that we are no longer limited to the 1980s and earlier....Bon Jovie's version of "It's my live". I think it has the kind of spirit which fits the Got G.

Though I have a feeling that they will try to stick to earlier songs....

If they use stuff from the 90s I can think of a handful of songs off the top of my hand that at least one of needs to be used:

Tubthumping
What Is Love?
Can't Touch This
Macarena

Also, any David Bowie song. Literally any of them. Please.

I demand that Volume 3 include Automatic Man.

In fact, I demand that Volume 3 make Automatic Man canon to the Galaxy-verse.

They didn't just pick up Stallone for anybody either - they picked him up to play a character from the original 60's and 70's Guardians of The Galaxy, same as Ving Rhames.

Ladies and gentleman, I think we may have a movie following the original Guardians on our hands - without Yondu, may he rest in peace.

I'd love a Guardians vs Original Guardians/Ravagers plot, with the two teams going up against one another. Or even a movie let by Starhawk's team that gets even crazier than the main Guardians movies.

Totally random observation but I really love that Ego introduces himself with "I am your dad" and not with "I am your father" and not just because of the Star Wars parallel. Because the claim that he is Peter's father would be true. But he isn't Peter's dad.
