That helps give them a sense of realism before the whole falling off a cliff and busting your head open thing whams you in the gut.

[up][up]She's a valuable weapon in the fight against extinction. Of course she'd be worried about being stolen.

As for Chtholly, her own conflicting feelings can easily be explained away by her being the oldest and most experienced of the leprechauns. That tends to wear away at even the toughest programming.

I'm pretty sure the smaller kids were just having fun, like saying that Nygglatho is going to eat them or something. It could be that they were warned against being kidnapped, but they're not useful to anyone except as powder charges that blow up with the dug weapons.

It's been fun.

Good episode, a lot of interesting stuff.

Ctholly having delayed embarrassed reaction was hilarious.

I liked the fight scene a quite a bit. Interesting that the original purpose of the dug weapons is to turn your opponents power back at him.

That flashback. The injuries at least explain why Willem won't go fight himself.

Everyone took the revelation that he's a human way better than I though.

Ctholly dilemma was a hard one. Accepting that there is a better way to fight means coming to terms with the fact that her senpais could still be alive.

I like the lizard commander guy. I like that the military aren't some mustache twirling bad guys. In reality the whole situation is a disgrace for them and must feel that way.

I loved the tuning scene, so pretty. I also love how the swords are made from amulets and that each individual amulet has a trivial power, but the power linking is not straightforward and together they become a holy sword. So clever.

My favorite episode so far, a lot of good stuff, nothing to complain about.

I'm kind of disappointed that it's playing the "male lead is better than everyone in every way except for arbitrary weakness" LN trope so straight. I was hoping he'd be more of a moral support character than a master swordsman.

He is the moral support.

If I told you, it would be a spoiler, though its basically pointed out right here that he's basically a Dead Man Walking.

And no, the Light Novel and the anime will state that in terms of raw power, Chtholly is easily stronger then Willem by miles, it just so happens that because she was using brute force and how none of the fairies know how to actually use them, she lost to him, but at the same time, if he were to truly fight, He'd die on the spot instantly because of his past battles.

so no, its not.

It makes sense that he's way more skilled, since hew was an elite warrior, while they are basically living bombs which I imagine does not require nearly as much skill.

The guy's body is almost literally falling apart, judging by this episode. They've placed him heavily in the role of the wise, crippled mentor rather than the hero.

He's basically Ben Kenobi as a LN protagonist.

[up][up] That is quite the interesting viewpoint. Having The Mentor as the LN protagonist.

Yeah, I really liked this episode. Actually Shlugo's impressions way up at post 31 match mine almost word for word. I'd just like to reiterate how cool that Lizard Guy wasn't typical military hardass, and how cool the concept of a dug weapon is.

I'm dreading next episode because of Willem's pained look in the preview. Craaaap.

Geez, Willem's body's a wreck. It's a wonder he can still move around.

I like how the dug weapons aren't like conventional swords, seeing as they're a bunch of talismans patched together to make a sword.

I can't fault Chtholly for not accepting Willem's advice at first since she and older Leprechauns never really learned how to properly use those weapons (no one in existence knew how to use them, I assume).

Limeskin's a chill lizardman. Thought he'd be rougher, honestly.

...

I'm not really seeing where the actual conflict is supposed to be in this series right now.

'Cause, well, they can't kill Chtholly now. All the drama this episode and last week are pretty much a waste if she just goes and dies in some other situation. Which means we've pretty much dodged all the tragedy flags that were set up? Unless we're going for something like 'because she didn't sacrifice herself, she wasn't able to beat the baddie and dozens of other people died instead of her', but I don't feel like this series is quite cynical enough to do that.

So what are we looking at for the rest of the series? The other girls going through similar arcs to what they just did with Chtholly?

@Gilphon There is a reason why the defence of the island was declared lost. The islands are the ONLY place safe from beasts, so losing a whole island is a big deal - one which Limeskin will have to deal with down the line. Also, the talk with the doctor about fairies losing their minds forebodes ill to me.

Limeskin's niece sure is dressed up to eleven, and she even stood in the rain...

[up][up] One of the key points of the series is whether or not they will survive every mission they go on. We see this conflict from the eyes of people who don't even fight on the frontlines.

Essentially, its a reversal of the usual trope of the loving wife waiting for her husband to return from war. Replace the wife with Willem and Chtholly with the husband, basically.

[up]Right, but they've done that now. Now that we know Chtholly's gonna make it back alive- because, as I said, if they kill her in some other situation down the line it would mean the drama we've so far was a waste- there's no longer tension is waiting for her to come back.

[up][up]We'll see. We haven't gotten the full picture on what went down yet, and as I said, I don't feel like this series is cynical enough to go 'Chtholly's decision to not sacrifice herself resulted in hundreds of civilian casualties'.

[up] They apparently knew the attack would come way in advance, so they would have had time to evacuate that island. So, yeah, probably not an ironic "whoops, you didn't sacrifice yourself like a good tragic hero, now you're a mass murderer" situation.

Not sure what I think of this show so far. It's seemingly trying very hard to not be another boilerplate otaku panderfest, but the basic framework is still there. There's one guy and a gaggle of girls, but it's not really a harem because he's more of a father figure, except haremy tropes do crop up with all the older female characters, and in a meta-sense it's clear that the only reason all the "leprechauns" look exactly like female humans is because this is a show for straight men, which makes the large number of child characters a bit creepy...

The protagonist is, at least, a better character than any other light-novel hero that springs to mind; i.e. he's not a hyperactive obnoxious 8-year-old in the body of a high-schooler, nor is he the most powerful and/or smartest being in the known universe. He seems more like a typical Western hero, actually, except he doesn't get to do any fighting (though he probably will eventually) and is more of a mentor. That's not a perspective we see very often outside of a Lower-Deck Episode or something. The setting is kind of interesting but apparently isn't the main focus. The other characters, so far, still feel pretty standard for this general genre, and mostly seem like tear-jerking implements. But that could still change.

I don't want to spoil you guys, so I'll just say that yes, the Sukasuka is cynical and loves to Yank the Dog's Chain. Not sure about the anime, though, since the anime is currently at the beginning the second volume, but they skipped the ending and epilogue to the first volume, which sets a darker tone for the entire series.

My guess is the anime doesn't want to go too dark. At least, for now.

[up] There's an in-story reason why the Leprechauns are shaped like little girls. (I mean, it probably IS still directed at straight men, but at least there's that.grin)
