The description specifies "The Scrappy and his ilk", although that's linked to Scrappy Index, which currently covers more than just that, so it's not specific. However, my interpretation is that the trope can apply to any character who's hated by a significant portion of the fandom, whether The Scrappy, Base-Breaking Character, or a Hate Sink.
If you have some evidence to it being done because the creator believed the character was The Scrappy or otherwise largely disliked (i.e. to appease the audience), then I'd count it.
If it's strictly about The Scrappy, the trope probably needs a cleanup effort and a TRS redefinition.
Check out my fanfiction!Personally, I think Take That, Scrappy! should be reserved only for The Scrappy characters. Including Base-Breaking Character kind of makes the trope just "bashing a character some people don't like," which seems a bit overly broad to me.

You should probably just cut it. Base-Breaking Character is already terribly misused anyway so I don't doubt that there's a of Take That, Scrappy! entries that are just "something bad happens to character some fans hate"
Isn't that why this thing is YMMV? "Scrappy-ness" is YMMV and the character might by only a "scrappy" for some people, and so Take That, Scrappy! can apply to them. That is, it may be said that "some people think this guy deserves it". That's the subjective part.
We don't need justice when we can forgive. We don't need tolerance when we can love.YMMV doesn't necessarily mean "all opinions are correct." It's about documenting audience reactions, and The Scrappy is specifically for characters that are hated by a vast majority of the fanbase. That's why I think Take That, Scrappy! shouldn't include Base-Breaking Character, because a Base-Breaking Character doesn't have as much of a hatedom as The Scrappy.
It should be limited to be about characters considered The Scrappy. A Base-Breaking Character still has a notable fanbase that could get ticked off.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?
Hi. I like to ask if Take That, Scrappy! can be used for base breaking characters. I see this in a YMMV page and I'm unsure how to deal with and I cannot find an alternative YMMV for it.
