It entirely depends on the kind of 'Dungeon crawling' you are talking about, the Zelda style connected areas with hub areas or levels or the RP Gs where you only are able crawl through dungeons and change out gear without any other mechanics? Both are still around really with games like Dark Souls.
Open world games though are just the current fad and one that is waning I think, people are starting to realize that most of the time 'freedom' is an illusion in all but a few of those games.

TV Trope's video game pages often have ridiculous claims that only exist in the author's mind, but are written as if they're widespread opinions
"donkey kong 64 killed 3D platforming games by being a multi-million selling and critically acclaimed game"
"Nintendo deliberatly made yoshi's story◊ a shitty game to kill off any attempts to make 2D platformers on the n64"

This site isn't perfect, is all we saying.
I dunno if this is related, but have an anecdote from me: One of my friends hates "dungeon crawling" and when pressed, he says that what he actually means is that he wants to see the characters doing attacks as a sprite or 3D model... he doesn't like the style of games like Might and Magic, Wizardry or Etrian Odyssey where you're basically only seeing character faces as well as attack effects on the screen against the enemies.
My DA account... I draw stuff sometimes!FYI those are generally known as "blobber RPGs" (your party moves around as a single blob). So you can set your friend straight, so he doesn't make people think he dislikes games he doesn't.
Keep in mind that the vast majority of early RPGs (once we got past pure text-based games) were blobbers. I do find them reasonably enjoyable, if done well.

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)I've actually heard tons of people cite Donkey Kong 64 as the game that killed the "collect-a-thon" genre, both on and off TV Tropes. I don't think that's an unpopular opinion at all. In fact, the Kickstarter page for Yooka-Laylee assured prospective backers that, despite having the guys who made DK64 on the development team, the new game wouldn't have as many collectible trinkets.
Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?They are typically known as Japanese Dungeon Crawlers nowadays since they are pretty much the only ones who do that now. Etrian Odyssey, SMTIV, Dungeon Travelers 2 etc.
I think it is a bit much to say that any one work can kill off a whole genre like that, but I do think that discussing the impact and presence of collect-a-thon platformers after DK 64 would be a pretty interesting subject.
It's probably better suited for the Donkey Kong thread though. I may have to go and type up a post there....
Oi, cut it out with the complaint threads.
