Put me down for hating it. I'll try to avoid rehashing anything already said, but some things that bothered me:

  • They got the three former stars really, really wrong. I get that they were trying to portray Mrs. Whatsit as something other than human, but all they accomplished was turn her into a jerk. A jerk whose main issue was her inability to communicate with Meg despite being the one with a gift for communication, I might add. (They later undermine their goal by giving her very human byplay with the Happy Medium). This could have worked if there was an arc, but there was no payoff.
  • And Mrs. Who. In the book, she struggled with communicating, so she used quotes to convey her thoughts. In this book, "she prefers not thinking for herself". In a Madeleine L'Engle story. I'm glad I saw it on a Monday afternoon, so there were no kids to see me give the movie the finger.

There are other things that I could write, but it's late and I'm having trouble putting them to words just now. My overall issue is that I am fundamentally opposed to the idea that stories for kids are allowed to be dumb. A Wrinkle in Time speaks to kids at a level that they can understand, but respects them enough to understand complex ideas. The movie isn't dumb, but it glosses over so much that it's just generic.

Mrs Who in the movie was one of those things where I felt like someone read the text in the book and just... did not comprehend it. Aside from the much more important issues already mentioned, book Mrs Who also does not cite the nationality of the people she quotes - it only comes up when the original quote was not in English, since she quotes in the original language first, identifies what language it was, then translates.

Admittedly this is a super minor nitpick, but it contributed to the overwhelming sense I had of the movie just generally missing the point.

This movie bored me to tears. I was actually wondering if I could walk out and just get my money back, but I sat through it all bored out of my mind. That and was it me or was Calvin (the older male kid) giving creepy and long staring glances at the main girl? (too forgettable to even remember her name) Like, if I saw some young teen looking at my daughter like that, for as many times as he does, I'd be readying my shotgun.

I just got back from seeing it myself. You were all right. The movie was just pretty good. It wasn't especially good, but it wasn't terrible either.

The book ruined turkey dinners for me. Every time I eat turkey I think about how to Meg and Calvin the food tasted alright but to Charles Wallace it tasted like sand.

Saw the film today. Not familiar with book, only knew that it plays with genuine physics principles. It could just be that I am not the target audience, but I found the integration of real physics to be the most interesting part of the movie, and how it is being understood and described by children.

But overall was not impressed. The movie was just way too sentimental for its own good, everything that happens is associated with BIG emotion but never has any payoff. Events just sort of happen, intended to be moving and emotional but doesn't go anywhere. The whole sequence where Ms. Whatsit turns into a flying... lettuce leaf... felt like an arbitrary IMAX 3D moment, and after Calvin fell into the flying flowers they admit they weren't really going anywhere that would solve their problem.

The child actors were alright, but of the adult actors the only one that felt natural was Chris Pine (who has been doing really good work the last few years). I imagine the costumes, hairstyles and make-up didn't help the three women, they all seemed very restrained by it all. Oprah in particular could barely walk, and felt stuck standing in one place making an attempt to look awe-inspiring and majestic (relying on the visual effect making her appear enormous).

Cleaned up the movie's nightmare fuel page, which previously had "meta" moments from the trailers and a lot of natter.

i don't get the problem with that YMS review. he went into more detail than most critics, amateur or professional. he actually went into a lot of detail about how the cinematography was badly done and he elaborated on issues with acting and plot. i don't see how he went over the same point over and over.
