Hey, it's Denis Villeneuve. Dude could make a remake of Freddy Got Fingered and I'd watch it.
I'm torn. I really don't see why there should be another Blade Runner movie, nor what it could add, but the credentials behind it don't suggest a cheap cash in effort and that trailer does look legitimately interesting.
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."Haven't seen any of the rest of his filmography, but Arrival is easily the best film of the year IMO.
Children of Dievas - my webcomic about the Northern CrusadesBoth Arrival and his previous film, Sicario, are amazing.
Yeah, in Quebec he's been one of our most acclaimed directors and basically every film he's done is a success, it's encouraging to see Blade Runner was put in his hands.
Maybe it's just because of the red-tinted color scheme and dreamy landscapes and buildings, but I got Git S 2: Innocence vibes watching the trailer.
That was another case of a very good science fiction / cyberpunk film where the original film didn't need a sequel either, but the sequel still got made and it was a "net positive" still (even if not as amazing as the original).
So, in short, I have a good feeling about this!

I'm not too worried. When it comes to Villeneuve, he'll make the absolute best he could in his condition. The cinematography looks pretty phenomenal too, based on the trailer. Count me interested, I am aware that the film will naturally get a Tough Act to Follow by many people regardless of the result. But if the film is as good as the director's previous efforts, people will get over it eventually.
Speaking of which, Denis said that he considered doing a Dune film once. The oranged-tinted scenes kinda reminded me of it.

Honestly, the more info I hear about this movie, the more excited I become. Not is only Harrison Ford back. Not is only he gonna be acting alongside Ryan Gosling. Not only is Ryan Gosling likely going to be the main lead (which is a very sufficient replacement). Not only are we going to be in some new locations (The city is fantastic and all but I like that we're seemingly to be spending more time in other, differently styled locations. Hell, it arguably makes sense that there'd be a bright, sunny, and clean looking location for when Gosling meets Ford as opposed to the dark, grungy looking, city of L.A).
But most of all, it's going to be directed by the same guy who Sicario, so it's a safe bet this isn't gonna be a mainstream sci-fi flick.
Though, this does seem to finally put a capper on whether or not Deckard's a replicant.
Apparently not, they're still (somehow) going to keep it ambiguous.
Children of Dievas - my webcomic about the Northern CrusadesYeah, I heard that on another site I frequent that was talking about the whole concept of the remake. Not sure how they're going to be doing it, but I'm not bothered - the film isn't on my "I'm going to see this first week regardless, if at the cinema at all" list. If it gets decent reviews from folks I trust I might get it when it goes to Amazon Prime or Blu-Ray.
A new trailer graces us today.
Recent Ghost in the Shell piqued my interest in everything cyberpunk, can't wait for the new Blade Runner to come out.
“You can’t be an important and life-changing presence for some people without also being a joke and embarrassment to others.” -Mark Manson.Visual direction looks good. Trailer does not really portray it as a noir, which was part of the charm of the original. The little the trailer tells us about the setup might indicate that this will be more interesting as "cyberpunk" goes than the Git S remake.
Does anyone else think it's a little funny that even though it's not the video gaming juggernaut it was when the first Blade Runner came out, there's still a huge Atari logo in the movie's universe?
Also, those eyes in Jared Leto's character! My god, they look positively bizarre...
Good music as always, trailer doesn't seem to sell the noir aspects though. Then again, this could be another case of a Denis Villeneuve movie being slower-paced than what the trailers give.
Do you guys think this is going to catch the same trouble with executives that the first film had?
You mean about the narration they added, and the ending? Probably not. They got Denis Villeneuve, who if anything seems like he's made the movie even more overtly arthouse.
This looks good, and I'm excited to see it in a way, but it doesn't quite hit the same buttons (so to speak) for me that the original did. It has that 21st Century sci-fi austerity that everything seems to these days, barring the occasional Fury Road and whatnot. Which has its place, but I really wanted the full rainsoaked neon jungle, not another Zen garden, iPod dustbowl future.
I don't know, it definitely seems to me like it has the characteristic grit and sleaze of the original world, if a little altered or shined up by the in-universe passage of time. Like all the hologram ads that look like they're straight out of AKIRA - those don't look too far removed from the low-life feel of the first film, to just point out one feature.
A prequel short. One of three.
“You can’t be an important and life-changing presence for some people without also being a joke and embarrassment to others.” -Mark Manson. The original composer (Jóhann Jóhannsson) has for some reason been yanked entirely off the movie. Huh.
Damn, his contributions gone too? IIRC he talked about wanting to live up to Vangelis, and his scores for the previous Villeneuve films were really good.
Just when I was getting into the guy, I listened to his solo albums recently. I guess all we can do is hope for the best.

Time for thethird short, albeit not a live-action one.
