Kaylee|Engineering

Kaylee continued to look confused. She had been brought into this conversation suddenly, and still had no idea what was going on.

"I don't know what's happening. But if they're harmless, then sure."

She paused. What she said next was a lot quieter, in a concerned tone. Kaylee sounded dismayed, lost.

"She's not answering. Why isn't she answering?"

By now the Verne should have answered her greeting and questions. Machines weren't usually this quiet. Why wasn't she answering? She shouldn't be this quiet. What was wrong?

Tatsumaki->New Delhi Station->Residential Quarters

Tatsumaki's mouth quirked toward a genuine smile, despite herself. It wasn't usually this easy, or unambiguous, but saving innocents was hands-down the best part of the job. Take no substitutes.

Rather than navigate the inanity of the zero-grav enviroment, Tatsumaki once again enveloped herself in a green glow and rose above the crowd, clasping her arms behind her as she demanded their attention. "Attention, residents of New Delhi station." She called out, looking across the crowd to make eye-contact with scattered residents, "My name is First Officer Tatsumaki Kyofu, of the U.S.S. Verne. We are here to save you." No substitutes at all.

Tatsumaki waved her arm to Koolan. "Those with injuries, form a single-file line. Once you are cleared, you will be beamed back aboard the ship, to receive further instructions." She lowered her arm; this next part was going to sound a bit harsh, but there was nothing worse than stalling at the finish line. "From there, priority will go to non-essential staff. Wives and children of those who were on the station, that means you." Her eyes lowered a fraction. "Rest assured that we are doing everything in our power to find out what happened to your families. We encountered a hyperspace anomaly on our way here that suggests an alternate explanation for the Station's disappearance. Remain vigilant, and do not lose hope."

After a moment more than was probably appropriate, Tatsumaki gathered herself, and resumed. "Those who did or are keeping the station operational, give my team a full status report." She said, nodding to one of the personnel approaching Peridot. "It is imperative that we understand what happened to this station, so that we can head off another attack. Do we have a record of those missing? Does anyone have a visual report of the invaders?"

Ah, there was the first inconsistency. It might just be the stress talking, but then it might not. First it's he gets called out to a trial and things go sour, then it's just he heard the word trial and the station goes poof. Poof, not boom. Gone, not scattered across space in lots of pieces like it is. I won't call him on it just yet. Better to let him talk and give him all the rope he'll take.

"Okay, I get you. Everything went poof and there you were. And then?"

My combadge chose that moment to chirp at me again. The second I heard the word 'update,' I put a hand over it to muffle the voice. I did not want Pines realizing things might not be as I had implied just yet. When it stopped making noise, I let go of it. I didn't really need to hear what was being said, anyway. I could guess.

"Yeah," I said to Leo, "Just pass everything along to my staff, they can sort through it. And listen to the Commander, she was there when I explained what precautions we'd need to take. Also, try not to call me again if you don't have to, I'm in the middle of something."

That done, I turned back to Pines.

"Sorry about that." I shrugged. "Burdens of command. You know how it is."

Dr. Quinzel shrugs. "If you want to do something about that ego thing, Orbo, just let me know. Head shrinking is my speciallity." She taps something on her tablet, encrypting the list so only she and the chief medical officer should now be able to access it, and hands it to Dr. Octavius.

"So, anything else interesting happening here besides the usual boo-boos to kiss?"

Delhi Station

Convinced that Genji had the situation under control, Botanica looked around quizzically at the sight of the topsy-turvy station, idly knocking a drifting chair out of the way as she mulled over the strange circumstances.

Kicking her jets into high gear, the Maximal pushed her way up to the top of the station and activated her internal scanners - still cycling through the data that she had gleaned from her preliminary scans aboard the Verne she tried to find anything that could corroborate the anomalous data she'd picked up there.

The dragon looked over at Ensign Nadir. Slowly, a smile quirked on his face, a crooked, cruel smile.

"We have ssso many, I don't think it makesss much of a difference." He spoke softly, but the undertone was one of cruel satisfaction. "After all, a clean analysssisss can only get you ssso far."

With the containment procedures just about done, the lizard "looked" over to the crew responsible for handling the leechticks. "Have one of thossse cratesss transssported to my lab. Bridge

That could've gone better. Leo almost apologised for the intrusion, but the line was already cut. He couldn't blame the doctor for being brusque if he was busy (well, maybe he could, just a bit), but the result was still a little disheartening.

Best not to dwell on it. Shunting those feelings off, he instead did what Croaker had requested and opened another channel to the doctor's staff. "Bridge to Medical personnel. Update on the Delhi Station survivors: none appear to be in critical condition, so we should be beaming up all 99 into the prepared cargo hold on Deck G. Preliminary scans didn't show any signs of infection, but we've set up a quarantine field just in case. Stand by for the away team's report, and our ETA for Mumbai Station."

It was almost like reading from a script; if he thought of it that way, then he didn't feel as highly strung about having to address so many crewmembers at once. He quickly turned back to his course setting, only pausing again when the captain addressed him.

"This is... definitely nothing like I'd thought it'd be, captain. N-Not that that's bad, or anything!" It was a bit weird, Leo had to admit. He'd been expecting a superior who was all business, or someone who was older than him at the very least. Having one that was instead three years younger and made small talk with a junior was entirely out of left field... though, admittedly, it was also kinda nice.

The thought of a promotion was enough to make him flush, though it was quickly replaced by a somewhat uneasy chuckle. "It'd be nice if we survived for that long... Are you used to this sort of, uh, "excitement"? That is, if you don't mind me asking, sir."

BRIDGE

"There was a saying back at the Academy: excitement follows me, and not the other way around!" Joseph loudly proclaimed, enjoying the chance to bask in the glory of some well-earned 'person looking up to me' feelings. "We're put through this kind of exercise all the time- that's why you don't see me freaking out. I trained my entire life for this exact moment!"

Almost as if on cue, the bridge went through a minor quake, enough to grab the attention of the people in control. "Well, that... I've never seen that before." Joseph mumbled, pointing at the sudden appearance of a group of multicolored clouds, all of them as big as Delhi Station and currently crowding around it's remains, odd spots of blinking white light shining through the clouds as they moved together, in a formation resembling an actual organism.

"We've gotta move in." Joseph said, leaning forward and pointing at Delhi Station before pressing the comms button. "Tatsumaki! There's something huge surrounding Delhi Station! You need to get those people out of there immediately- transporters are warming up as we speak! Get them to a safe location and start sending up as many as you can!" He ordered, leaning forward even more. "Officer Watch, get us closer. Circle the things. We may have to attract its attention..."

DECK T

Ensign Nadir just... stares at Avitus, because how the hell are you supposed to respond to that. "Am I the Initiate?" He asked anybody but Avitus, thinking that if he posed that question to the Security officer, he'd dislodge his jaw and swallow him whole in one go. "I gotta admit, this guy... this guy is confusing me." He then noticed Kaylee, and pointed at her with his thumb. "No, wait, she's confusing me."

The Verne finally responded to Kaylee in a series of muted buzzing noises, which could have been roughly translated into a distracted mumble coming from someone concentrating in something that it considers to be much more important- something clearly not happening at Deck T.

The seeming peace at Deck T was interrupted the instant Seath hinted that he was going to dissect one of the Leechticks. Almost as if understanding the Chief Science Officer's words, all the caged Leechsticks began throwing themselves against their walls, chirping loudly and biting at the cage holding then. And the ones outside of their cages did not wait, escaping of the grasps of the Engineering officers and launching themselves at Seath's head, jaws wide open.

SICKBAY - READY ROOM

Captain Pines replied to Croaker's little joke with a raised eyebrow and by biting his lips, trying to hold back some kind of angry response. "Listen, I already told you. After that, I drifted through space until you guys found me. Now you need to let me see your captain- before that thing comes back! The more you're holding me here, the more you're putting all of your people in danger!"

——-

SICKBAY - ENTRANCE

Otto gritted his teeth and clenched his fists when Harleen shrugged off his demands, but he was quick to regain his smile.

"Once more, it's Otto, Ms. Quinzel." He repeated, moving over to the windows. "And— oh... now that is fascinating..." He trailed off, stopping to watch the multicolored congregation of oddly shaped clouds concentrating around Delhi Station, and the completely unnatural light show of galactic proportions that they were providing.

DELHI STATION - RESIDENTIAL SECTOR

"I presume you are all talking about me?" Somehow, in the middle of all the discussion about him, the Shaigan had floated over to the group, glaring at them with the most disapproving look his brow could muster. "I couldn't help but notice the hateful glare I gained from your..." He took a moment to analyse Genji's badge, then clicked his tongue and pointed at Zarna and the others with his head. "... subordinates."

"The term is officer, Shaigan." Zarna replied with unwieldy gruffness as her finger seemed to be looking for a reason to reach for her phrase.

"Would the Earth Alliance promote someone clearly unprepared like yourself to the position of officer?" The Shaigan rolled his eyes exaggeratedly, smiling to himself as Zarna grabbed his bait- hook, line and sinker. "I'd rather think the opposite. Otherwise I'd have to reconsider the effectiveness and the experience of this rescue team. And that is clearly not the appropriate course of thinking during this time of stress."

Once Tatsumaki made her announcement, Max adjusted a non-existent tie. "You're the leader? I'm sorry, ma'am, it's just that you're so... ehrm... you know what that I thought you were just another officer." He said, chuckling at his own joke, trying to lessen its possible impact.

But both Max and the Shaigan would have something else to focus on, as the screens and speakers of the residential area crackled to life, prompting all the survivors to give that look of 'I have seen this before'. "TATSUMAKI KYOFU." Yelled a garbled, clearly computer-generated voice that made all of the survivors not only yelp in surprise but also rush towards the exit, all of them floating as fast as they could to anywhere else. "WILL YOU AND YOUR FELLOWS REPRESENT MANKIND?"

The instant the voice came up, Botanica's sensors threatened to go haywire, detecting copious amounts of the same materials just outside the ship (to give you an idea of how strong they were). Even the Shaigan reacted with fear to the voice, although he used this chance to shove Zarna aside. "Move!" He ordered. "I will not die with all of these humans!"

RICCO, DECK T
For some reason, Ricco's boss had managed to always make him feel uncomfortable in the few times they'd met before boarding. There was just something entirely off-putting about his presence, and he wasn't able to pinpoint it. The only thing he had to go on was some hint of danger following that man.

But of course, it would be incredibly rude to act on these presumptions, so he just nodded to his officer when spoken too. Like usual. He was about to say something more on the subject when suddenly, the leechticks decided to get aggressive!

Lashing out with the barb on his tail on one hand, trying to impale or otherwise block one heading for Seath's head, and shooting at another with his phaser, Ricco's senses kicked into overdrive as he attempted to intercept as many as he could.

He spotted the Shaigan running away along with the captives of the station. Grabbing him firmly, he asked Tatsumaki. "Oh no, you don't," he said as he dragged him along to Chief Officer Tatsumaki. "Ma'am, what should we do about the Shaigan?"

Then the helmsman showed up, and Sarah decided to give up on that if it meant ignoring this asshole.

Tatsumaki->New Delhi Station->Residential Quarters

Tatsumaki's hostage-saving contact-high dimmed a bit when one of the engineers jokingly brought up her height. Though she would deny it in every way, she almost physically snapped at the air in the process of biting back her typical Academy response, the type of retaliation that had earned her the nickname "Tornado of Terror" amongst her peers. Instead, she merely narrowed her eyes at Max, uttered a stone-cold "Quite." and lowered herself to begin the process of directing the survivors.

Then, the speakers crackled to life.

Tatsumaki stared at her command badge for a moment, uncomprehending as Joseph relayed his report. Snapping into action, she tapped the badge to link with Botanica's. "Full-spectrum readout, on the double." She barked as her gaze flicked about the roomy auditorium, lingering on the hijacked speakers. "Find out what we're talking to." Likewise, when Akihiro came up with a suspect in tow, she flicked her head to the side after giving him an aside glance. "Apprehension of suspicious figures is Military Advisor Shimada's department. That is his job, after all." More than that, Tatsumaki suddenly found herself with a pressing need to compartmentalize. "Engineering staff," she yelled out, not bothering with the badge so that the scurrying residents could hear her, "Move everyone further into the station, and secure a location within the Station's hold that can weather a second hull breach. Then, transport out as many at a time as you can. Safety, then transportation. In that order! Move!"

With that, Tatsumaki finally looked up at one of the speakers, scowling as though she were staring into the face of another one of the slipstream lowlifes who preyed on the lesser-patrolled trade routes around the Outer System. Whatever these beings thought of humanity, they were in for a surprise. "Yes, I suppose we will." She said, rolling her wrist around in a gesture for the unoccupied Security staff to ready their weapons. "And let me begin by thanking you for making the maiden voyage of the U.S.S. Verne so very very interesting."

Genji Shimada - Delhi Station Residential Sector

While the discussion was going, the Shaigan noticed the looks the security officers were giving him and chimed in the conversation. He was understandably upset with the way he was already being treated, but he also went out of his way to provoke Zarna.

"While I understand that you are upset with the accusations, you aren't earning yourself any favors by intentionally provoking my crew," he told him, sounding stern. As much as he disagreed with the way his officers were handling this whole situation, at the same time he couldn't fault them for thinking he was suspicious and his current behavior wasn't helping matters.

The First Officer then made her speech, giving everyone her full name. Tatsumaki Kyofu, one had to wonder the thought process of her parents when they came up with that name or if it was an accident. Considering the reaction she gave to the person who commented about how he was expecting someone taller, whatever prophetic vision her parents had about how she would grow up to be like was not wrong.

Then at the end of it all someone began speaking through the speakers, the voice was enough to send everyone into a panic, including the Shaigan, who tried to run away but was then caught by one of the security officers who instead of talking to him about it, instead went to Tatsumaki. Genji brought a hand to his forehead, or his helmet's as it was the case, while listening to the First Officer unsurprisingly telling the guy off. The wonders of working of a completely new crew, it was going to take some time to get adjusted to.

"Just bring him to the ship, we'll deal with him later," he instructed the officer.

Judging by the Shaigan's reaction he probably didn't have much to do with what happened to the station, not after this little display where he was fearing for his own life at the mere sound of a voice on the speakers. Whoever it was that was speaking to them, they were addressing the First Officer directly, so Genji just stood there with one hand already resting on the hilt of the sword hanging on his waist in anticipation of conflict.

Ha. So it turned out they were indeed intelligent enough to recognize danger and the meaning behind his thinly-veiled words. He was almost impressed.

Unfortunately for the leechticks, desperation was not an excuse for stupidity. He grabbed the first one lunging at him and crushed it in his grip with a disgusting squelch. Seath was not deterred however, batting aside another offender. "I need at leassst ten of thossse crittersss unharmed!" He growled towards the Engineering crew responsible for the caged leechticks. "Put them in a lowered temperature room at once!" One of the lucky leechticks latched onto the front of his snout, but even the sharp stinging pain did not seem to bother Seath too much, aside from silencing him for a brief moment until he pierced the alien with his fingers and shook it off.

Peridot - Delhi Station

"Hmm?" At Guy's question, Peridot glanced up from her tricorder, the blinking lights reflecting on her visor. "The ship encountered a chunk of the station while we were in the wormhole. When we actually arrived there was only this segment of the habitation area left intact. Our mission is to assess the situation in here." She replied curtly, still taking note of her measurements.

She finally flipped her instruments shut as Max spoke up. "Yes, I am chief engineer Peridot." She said, staring at his outstretched hand with one raised eyebrow. "I see. I wasn't informed about this design feature. I believe it would be prudent if you took me to see-"

Peridot was interrupted as the situation went conchoidal and people started streaming towards the exit, leaving the diminutive gem fumbling to re-holster her tricorder and move out of the way of a fleeing resident. "You there! Where's the most secure compartment of this station?" She shouted at Max, her hair bristling as she tried to get a grip on her own panic.

"Oh, I-I see." Leo was relieved, and perhaps a little envious, that Joseph was so confident in his own abilities. But he was also, rather unfortunately, reminded of an old acquaintance who always seemed to have misfortune following in his wake. Then again, whatever sort of adventure the captain gets caught up in can't possibly be as dangerous as Mr. Abrams.

That thought was about to be put to the test as their ship was rocked by a new arrival- one that, despite its rather pleasant appearance, sent cold shivers down Leo's spine. For a second he was distracted, almost mystified, by the multitude of colours and lights that the being emitted (amplified to an intense degree even with his eyes closed) before the captain's command snapped him out of it. He quickly set to work adjusting the angle of their bearing, so that they could maintain a circular course while also closing in on the clouds.

"We're approaching the, uh, the object. Activating life form sensors now." He doubted the thing would be in their database, but even if it weren't they could pick up on whether it had a heartbeat, a nervous system, a brain...

After a moment's deliberation he also cracked open an eye- his right one, out of sight of the captain and pilots- to see if there were any visual anomalies that the sensors might not pick up on. There was a mental sting as he adjusted to the sudden inflow of information, his brain struggling to catch up with his optics, before he was able to focus his vision on the entity before them.

"Like I said, they know what you've told me. You heard me tell'em. I can't do more than that. If it were me up there, yeah, I'd turn this ship around and run like hell, but even if I told'em to do that, they're not the type." I held up a hand, like the thought had just occurred to me. Although the sensors were completely befuddled by the cloud beings, Leo's right eye managed to catch a brief and almost blinding glimpse of five life forms in the center of the clouds, emanating such energy that looking directly at them would be like looking directly into the sun.

MEDICAL DECK

Otto looked visibly surprised at Harleen's sudden burst of intelligence. "I thought you were supposed to just be a counselor."

DECK T

Noticing quickly that they can't fight against creatures four times their size (and with giant feet to boot), the Leechtick stop swarming towards the Chief Science Officer, choosing instead to raise their forward legs in unison and whine in the loudest high pitch they could. "What the heck are they doing now?!" Ensign Nadir tried to ask, his hands covering his ears.

Fortunately, the answer came in the form of a quake. And then another quake. From the depths of the engine deck, where the Leechticks had come from, climbed out a grotesque four-legged being with a huge sack hanging from its center. Any questions raised by the appearance of said sack were promptly answered when tiny, slimy-covered mini-Leechticks wriggled out of its pores.

Ensign Nadir had no quip to use- instead, he chose to just double down and puke his guts out right in front of P'li.

DELHI STATION - RESIDENTIAL SECTOR

"Let me go!" The Shaigan responded gruffly, trying to break free from the swarm of officers surrounding him. "I'm being held without evidence or accusation! I will not lose my life thanks to a bunch of imbecile Earth Alliance officers! Let me go, damn you!" Some Security officers were so interested in holding back the Shaigan, they didn't even help Delhi Station's engineering officers, as they began the evacuation process (led by the still-very-confused-by-Tatsumaki's-height Max).

"T-the most secure compartment?" Max replied, bumbling towards Peridot. "The cells- Security used them to keep any prisoners inside. They're still intact, and they were designed to be escape-proof! We could use them as a way to evacuate everyone!"

"YOU APPRECIATION IS NOTED, THOUGH IT WILL NOT EARN YOU ANY FAVORS." The voice replied, its foghorn voice making loose objects tremble in mid-air. "YOUR PEOPLE WISH TO EXPAND INTO THE GREAT BEYOND. WE ARE ITS GUARDIANS, AND WE WILL ONLY ALLOW THOSE WHO WE DEEM PURE. OUR SURVEY OF YOUR SPECIES' HISTORY REVEALS A SERIES OF MISTAKES THAT MUST BE ANSWERED FOR. YOU WILL REPRESENT HUMANITY. FAIL AND YOUR VESSEL WILL BE OBLITERATED, MUCH LIKE THE VESSEL BELONGING TO THE PREVIOUS EARTH REPRESENTATIVE. YOU MAY CHOOSE WHO AMONGST YOUR COMPANIONS WILL REPRESENT HUMANITY WITH YOU."

SICKBAY

"Jeeze louise, are you even listening to me?" Captain Pines threatened to pull out his hair- if he had any left- when Croaker made his latest question. "I say poof but it wasn't exactly a poof. It was more like a contained burst. And the wave that came after that knocked me so hard, my systems all went kaploot! That's why my ship was adrift." He marched towards Croaker. "Listen, I know what you're doing. You don't think I'm the real deal! Well trust me, I am. So, please, buddy, just let me out of here so we can all get away from those things as fast as possible, alright?"

Neither the xenos starting their unholy wailing nor the appearance of their spawner distracts her from keeping the firering in midair. But the walking waste of oxygen depositing his lunch on her boots is the final straw, the ring dissipating as she turns her protuberant glare on the ensign.-

Why you filthy-

-As the monstrosity approaches, Avitus throws the leechtick into its fellows and brings up his bolter. Then he puts out an alert on the security channel.-

*This is Avitus. Major xenos infestation confirmed on T Deck, requesting all available security teams with heavy weapons to Engineering. Civilians present, prepare to handle evacuation.*

Head to the lifts! We will hold against this scum.

"Captain, there's-"

The rest was cut off with a yelp as the brunt of the energy's light hit Leo like a hammer, actually making him recoil in his seat. He didn't have any iris muscles, nor any pupil for them to constrict, but his eye's equivalent was no less painful. Covering it with the heel of his palm, he took a moment for the searing pain to pass before trying to report again. Better to do that first, he figured, than explain why he was acting weird.

"There's five..." with his closed eye he scanned the sensor's results and was rewarded with jack squat "...some sort of life forms, I think, in the middle of it. They're glowing like crazy- I mean, they're putting out a lot of energy. Our sensors can't make any sense of it."

Now that can't be good. Tails quickly took off in the air when saw what was obviously the mother of the leechticks. He headed for the lifts. "We need to quickly met with the other crewmembers ! Somehow I think we will need reinforcement to deal with that thing! And if we survive, we'll need to seriously rethikn about the containment procedures for the leechticks!"
