If it actually is symbolic, it would fit Rule of Symbolism, or a subtrope.
The best course of action would be to first determine on which trope the example fits. After that, you rewrite the example to fit that trope. Sometimes, if the work has both examples of actual symbolism, and faux symbolism, you can add it to both, and which parts are symbolic for the former, and which actually aren't for the latter.
Never add a sub-bullet with an explanation. See Example Indentation in Trope Lists and Repair, Don't Respond, and remember that Examples Are Not Arguable.
If you're not sure, bringing up a discussion on the forums or the discussion page is appropriate. I believe discussion pages are encouraged, but the forums have more views.

Check out my fanfiction!
Was reading through https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FauxSymbolism just now. It's a particularly thought-provoking page in that it offers up many examples which might actually be symbolic but have meanings which are either infrequently discussed and/or lack satisfactory explanations.
What is the best place for direct (even if speculative) debate or rebuttal to those entries? Creating a sub-level bullet? On the discussions page? Somewhere here in the forums?
Because it seems to me that the nature of the website is to be as inclusive as possible (rather than non-inclusive), the goal would not be to eliminate said entry from the list, but to expand upon it in a way that questions whether or not it "truly" belongs in that list.
