My only real issue now is what we've seen of the gameplay.

I'm not sold it'll be a bad game yet. Unless what we've seen is what we're going to get. I liked just puttering around and doing nothing sometimes in MGSV Phantom Pain. Or more specifically, collecting every Golden Cresent I can find so I can get the WU Pistol with carbine attachment.

It doesn't look terrible, but if that's pretty much the bulk of the gameplay, I'll be pretty disappointed. Right now, Konami needs to double-down and give the gamers something they'd never expect.

I would die if this plot were somehow explained as nanomachines going haywire, and were somehow resolved by a Raiden from an alternate timeline teleporting in and killing all of the zombies because that's how ninjas do.

Well, it's already been vaguely implied that the parasites are the origins of the nanomachines. And given that this game is going to be related to MGSV? Wouldn't be a stretch to assume that the crystalline zombies are created by some off-shot of the vocal chord parasites.

Konami is creating a new soundtrack for the Pachislot version of MGS 3. No, seriously.

Capcom did the same with its Biohazard pachislot so it's not new, shameful but not new.

[up] It is important to note that Kojima isn't so much making fun of Survive itself as much as he making fun of how the game is centered around zombies, MGS is no stranger to supernatural and bizarre elements but they were never the focus of the games.

I don't think so, it's just probably Konami not giving their Marketing department a decent budget, or something stupid like that.

Some journalists got an opportunity to play a single match of the game, and apparently, it's not too shabby... although, it still makes absolutely no sense in the overall MGS universe.

First off: this is going to be an online-only affair, with little to no singleplayer content. No word on if there even is going to be a plot past getting stuck in an alternate dimension versus some crazy metallic-crystal zombies, but I wouldn't hold your breath if I were you.

The gameplay handles almost exactly as it did in MGSV, so much to the point that the journalist was able to recall and master the controls in just a couple of minutes. Stealth plays a role, albeit a much subverted one since once the chaos starts you won't have much time to spend quietly snooping around. In fact, it might be better to describe this game as similar to all of those FPS zombie apocalypse game where you have to build and craft defenses via scavenging resources to survive.

Anyhoot... I'll let the article itself explain the nitty-gritty:

The demo began with placing four players in a pre-lobby, where we were able to select our class and play around in a sandbox environment, becoming familiar with both the controls and our loadouts before jumping into the game.

I decided to play as the Shooter, a character equipped with a standard assault rifle, but also capable of deploying fences and traps. She also comes with a bow, which made her stand out to me.

In the pre-lobby we were able to socialize a bit, going as far as trying out some emotes, which as a Metal Gear Online enthusiast I found important. Although voice chat wasn't supported at the time due to issues with the microphone hardware, it will certainly be a vital feature at launch.

We soon found ourselves in an open world desert environment, with narrow unpaved roads and dune-like mounds. In this open world, we encountered some stray enemies, but they were easy to take down, and ultimately served as a reason for our team to stick together from the get-go.

We soon arrived at an installation where our goal for the next 20 minutes would be to defend against waves of enemies. At the center we could construct a generator, which we would defend at all costs. Nearby were several walls, and even buildings we could enter through doors or windows.

As the first wave began, I set up a few fences to keep enemies at bay along with some traps in case things got ugly. One of these traps was a Fulton Trap, which would leave an enemy suspended in the air if they got too close, functioning like a crowd-control of sorts. After moving around a bit and engaging with several enemies using the assault rifle, I was happy to find that the gameplay and controls function nearly identically to Metal Gear Solid V. The team working on Metal Gear Survival clearly didn't tamper with the stellar gameplay that Kojima Products created a few years back, and that's a great thing.

The first wave of enemies were admittedly easy to take down, but I could tell early on that my teammates were competent. Not only were they using their utility in smart ways, but they were paying attention to the mini-map, which indicated where swarms of enemies were coming from.

Between waves, which are separated by over a minute, we had an opportunity to tackle side missions. These are very beneficial to complete, but as we would learn, are not a good thing to send your entire team out on. If successful, whoever is sent out is able to retrieve crafting materials, which are vital to surviving the latter waves. But at least one or two players should stay behind to prepare for the next wave, as the countdown doesn't stop for anyone.

The second wave introduced a new mechanical enemy that had thick armor and a huge bomb. This type of enemy was incredibly intimidating, even if it moved slowly, as it was capable of obliterating the generator we were defending if we didn't prioritize it. Even if it didn't get that far, it would collapse and explode when defeated, which posed a problem for our defenses.

It was during this phase that I became much more familiar with the items I was carrying, which is instrumental in Metal Gear Survive as resources are limited. For example, the bow isn't particularly powerful unless you are able to hit enemies in the head for quick kills, or in the legs to slow them down. However, it comes with a ton of arrows, and can be employed for stealth kills that don't alert nearby enemies. I also had a few sidearms, and a stun baton that felt awkward to use.

During this round I also learned more about crafting. Essentially, we found materials on the floor from time-to-time, and were rewarded handsomely when we ventured out from our installation to take on side missions or scavenge nearby territory. These materials could be used to replenish the quantity of utility we were carrying, or even build new items entirely.

I ended up crafting a sniper outpost, which I happened to place in a key location that gave us an opportunity to long-distance KO enemies in one of the more troublesome lanes. It was kind of strange building such a large structure, and holding it in my inventory, but that suspension of belief is something the Metal Gear franchise has never shied away from.

At the end of the second wave, two of our teammates were able to successfully complete a side mission, which rewarded them with D-Walkers. This small, single-person sized tank-type unit allowed them to move around quickly on the battlefield, and mow enemies down with a spray of bullets.

The third wave was incredibly challenging. At one point I thought we were toast. I ran out of ammunition for my assault rifle, and accidentally dealt some nasty damage to my teammates when tossing grenades, which probably didn't help much.

We were victorious, unlike the other team of press playing next to us. As a result, we were rewarded with rare loot, some of which was shared among our teammates, while others were given based on performance.

Hmmm. :3 -raises criticism deflector shield and rose-colored glasses-

it still makes absolutely no sense in the overall MGS universe.

Nothing makes sense in the overall MGS universe and nothing in the MGS universe makes sense overall. We've already VR missions that feature Godzilla-sized Genome soldiers, skateboarding minigames, and a single man taking down a tank with grenades and a mobile weapon platform with the aid of a ninja and some rockets, and another man taking out 6-10 Metal Gear RAY's.

First off: this is going to be an online-only affair, with little to no singleplayer content. No word on if there even is going to be a plot past getting stuck in an alternate dimension versus some crazy metallic-crystal zombies, but I wouldn't hold your breath if I were you.

People are just fine with Metal Gear Online as a standalone release, and with Ground Zeroes, which was 40 percent plot 50 percent filler side missions, and 10 percent audio tapes.

That said, nothing in that quote said it was online-only, only that the demo was part of an online match, unless I missed something.

The gameplay handles almost exactly as it did in MGSV so much to the point that the journalist was able to recall and master the controls in just a couple of minutes.

So almost exactly like the only aspect of MGSV that redeemed it's pitiful narrative and repetitive mission design?

Stealth plays a role, albeit a much subverted one since once the chaos starts you won't have much time to spend quietly snooping around

Nostalgia Critic, please make my reaction to this funny.

In fact, it might be better to describe this game as similar to all of those FPS zombie apocalypse game where you have to build and craft defenses via scavenging resources to survive.

Again, people who are actually sick of "Zombie apocalypse games" already have a bias against it.

Like COD Zombies it's probably going to have some semblance of plot. Which having played COD Zombies recently I learned that there's actually a pretty immersive plot going between games, seemingly almost eclipsing the main storylines.

An open beta period on the PS 4 is coming on the 18th.

A couple of new things I noticed:

  • So there's actually going to be a bit of plot, and the gist of it is that a whole lot more people got pulled through the wormhole than initially appeared.
  • Some Cipher strike team personnel got pulled through as well, and you can potentially recruit them.
  • At some point, I think the player might succeed in escaping the bizarro world and get back to Earth proper, but for some reason still have an invested interest in trying to explore it further.
  • Base Defense style gameplay is going to be a big aspect. Not sure if the base shown is your home base or merely an outpost, but I think the presence of old Mother Base in the background implies the former.
  • Some of the stuff appearing implies that this world you're stuck in isn't just full of junk and monster from the Mother Base attack. Notice how the child soldier kids appeared at one point in need of help? They didn't show up until 1984.

I've been watching some Let's Plays by the Oxbox and Oxtra teams.

It looks interesting. Why do I get the feeling that Virgil is up to no good? Possibly even being responsible for getting the team stuck in this situation?

I feel like it's foreshadowing that trusting an AI and doing its bidding and rebuilding it from the various scattered pieces always comes back to bite the protag in the ass?

Also, could this game have anything to do the the wandering Mother Base soldiers from Phantom?

[up] gonna give the benefit of the doubt and assume that's sarcasm, because there are just way too many people who honestly believe that. as i've been telling people on Reddit, Japanese companies mostly don't give a rat's ass about Western sales whether they're overwhelmingly good or bad, and Konami with Survive isn't the first company to do so, nor will it be the last. the only way that vocal minority will get what they want is if Japan also boycotts the game, and if Japanese Twitter comments are any indication, that's not gonna happen.

I won't buy it in light of recent financial concerns, but I do hope it sells well to shut up the crowd that never gave it a chance. I always suspected it was a passable game that just had the misfortune of being produced by a terrible company.

[up] they never gave it a chance for good reasons, but even still, it gets to a point where it's really annoying getting death threats if your opinion about this game is anything higher than foaming-at-the-mouth hatred of it. it doesn't really make the legit boycotters look any good, because they get lumped with the people who hate the game simply to be contrarian or ride the bandwagon ("OMG ZOMBIES #FUCKONAMI", etc.) i've been looking for buried commenters on Survive threads on /r/metalgearsolid and encouraging them to at least try the beta - if nothing else, they'll get the exact words to explain why they think the game's a steaming pile of shit, instead of just saying so ad nauseum and getting dismissed by everyone.
