Isn't Strike Witches that one anime about pantless underage girls flying around and fighting aliens (quick google says "yes")? Is it actually any good? Because from just that bare bones description, it sounds like a series that would be mentioned when someone tries to make people watching anime look like a bunch of perverts.
It's definitely one of those shows that are actually pretty decent if you can put up with the fanservice.
It's not so much about being good or bad as it's whether or not you want what they're selling you in the first place.
I've never watched Strike Witches precisely for that reason.

The tagline was "Winning the war on pants."
Well its a series where genderflipped WW 2 fighter pilots band together to fight aliens with engines strapped to their feet, its actually pretty good and does its research on personality quirks and various details like paint jobs on their Striker Units.
The alternate universe Istanbul (Not Constantinople) world building is insanely detailed and probably my fav part of the entire thing. Although I wouldn't have called Canada 'Farawayland'
Ages though there are a few newbies at 15 but everyone else is 16-20.
Only for the Funi dub.

As long as you can accept the idea that pants were never invented in the world of Strike Witches and teenage girls routinely walk around in winter coat and bloomers, which doesn't seem like the best idea to do in alternate-Leningrad, it's actually not all that bad. I've seen series with worse and more blatant fanservice.
Pants were invented, all the older and younger women wear pants. Just witches cant use them and fly and it became the trendy style for girls of that age.
Now how the Miniskirt didn't get invented... now that is the question.
Miniskirts didn't exist as we know them until the 1960s and Strike Witches and their spinoffs take place during alternate universe WWII so it's too early for them to be a thing in universe.
Shorts existed, though. They could've worn shorts.
Anyway, I'm bored. What's good right now?

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Drifters is pretty good.
Flip Flappers, JoJo, Yuri on Ice, and the second seasons of IBO and Euphonium.
What's precedent ever done for us?Hibike Euphonium is still going strong, Yuri on Ice is a very good character-driven sports piece with tons of fujoshi bait, and Girlish Number has a wonderfully snarky scum seiyuu lead.
You might also wanna check out 3-gatsu no Lion and Fune wo Amu, though those are kind of like the safe choices.
EDIT: Oh and Flip Flappers has been great too

Sangatsu no Lion is strangely like a well adapted novel, even if it originally is a manga. Fune wo Amu, as far as I know, is not available anywhere but on fansubs, and rather controversial ones at that.
OH GOD WHY AM I A CAR!? - ForzareFune wo Amu should be available on Amazon Prime, right? I haven't heard the fansubs are controversial; the Commie one seems decent.
Personally it's in my top five this season, with Hibike! Euphonium, Sangatsu no Lion, Yuri! on Ice and Flip Flappers.
Huh, well I'm fucked on that front anyway, but I didn't know amazon carried it. Thing about Commie is that sometimes it's a bit too liberal with translating stuff, not badly, but too causally.

OH GOD WHY AM I A CAR!? - ForzareStatus update now that something has finished:
Regalia: Finished now. Good, creative fights, interestingly weird plot... rest of it isn't actively bad. Worth a look if you're into mecha
Wixoss: Dropped this about halfway in. Trying too hard to be selector instead of playing to the new staff's strengths
Table tennis: Not really good, but kind of fun just for how gay it can get
Flip Flappers: Never actually bad, but it varies so much from episode to episode that I doubt anyone watching it will like everything it does
Izetta: Really starting to feel like it was originally intended to be 2-cour. Not the least elegant case I've seen, but still not what it might have been
MahoIku: Absolutely a death game series, but an example of how to do it well. Well-made all-around, creative, and generally stays without the bounds of plausible characterization
Gundam: Doubled down on the politics and moral ambiguity this season
Currently watching BW, IBO, Izetta, Jojo, and YOI..
And I think BW needs its own page with WW as the main franchise page..
Akari & Georgette are best waifus..Things are going to get hectic in IBO judging by the last episode. At least there's a good chance Kok won't be around after the next episode.
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet Unless I grew it. In that case, throw it in the trash.I just checked the first episode of Getsuyoubi no Tawawa but it seems a bit... questionable.
Tawawa on Monday would be better if it didn't hint at an adult-teen romance.

Yeah, that's the impression I got from the first episode.
I still watch it and like the character interaction, but I could live without that particular Ship Tease.
edited 15th Dec '16 8:08:24 AM by VeryMelon
Without that ship tease there's no series. It's all about the fantasy of being a cool old guy who gets yuuge breasted school girls to flirt with him and listen to his problems.
Shame, because I liked the concept behind the series being stress relief for the average worker. Maybe someday that idea will get revisited without the pandering hook.
Nishina became a lot more likable when it's revealed that she liked Serinuma even before she went bishoujo.
Dropped
Still following the other shows on my watchlist (except for Keijo and All Outs which I ended up not picking up).
