Atlantis doesn't really want Arthur either at first. He'll have to earn the people too, not just the throne.

[up]x2 Yeah with only the death of his father, which is honestly nothing new with a lot of super heroes sans Thor. Other than that recent tragedy, he is basically an incredibly privilaged ruler with all the training, tech and powers being handed to him by others, everybody in the country likes (save for maybe Man Ape, Shuri and Hawkeye . . . for that snub in Civil War . . . also their relationship in Earth’s Mightiest Heroes) and the struggle he has to go through is just defending his title of king against Clubber Lane, er I mean Adonis Cre- shit Killmonger. Its fucking Killmonger. Though amusing how I find Black Panther similar to the Rocky movie which marks the beginning of its Sequelitis. But point is, other than his dad being dead, T’Challa at that point has absolutely everything he could ever wanted in life (hell he could even still speak to his dad in the Panther Realm) with the only obstacle being some Vegeta looking motherfucker whose challenge for the he could just simply refuse if it weren’t for his pride (hell EMH T’Challa was smart enough not to do that with Hawkeye).

[up] Yeah what you said. Especially seeing how Atlantis is probably not fond of a fucking half breed land dweller ruling over them than the glorious full blooded Atlantean royalty. Huh, all of the sudden the race lift of Arthur Curry is very meaningful from a story perspective.

Now I have to ask something: who is athur father in the comics?

because I got the feeling he is going to face the same shit odin and t`chaka leave to is sons: a messy problem he didnt resolve.

His father is a normal & mundane human who simply manages a light house.

His mother is the one with all the baggage due to being Queen of Atlantis & shacking it up with a nobody land dweller.

All of Arthur’s issues come from his maternal side.

@K also nice references. Made me laugh there. [tup] tongue

[up]Now THAT is intersting, more often than not this kind of story are always about fathers and sons, often with the father comiting some mistake and is sons cleaing that up(T`challa,Athur).

I hope we see Athur taking with is mother, it would be nice to see mother-son bonding.

[up]x3 Pretty much what slimcoder said. The only baggage his dad, the dude he grew up with all his life, is giving him is to manage a local lighthouse in a small fishing town.

[up]x2 Don’t praise me too soon. I just missed out on the perfect opportunity to reference Star Wars or The Lion King with the whole ghost dad in the Panther Realm. Which is a real discrowner seeing how I am a fan of both those series as a kid. [tdown]

If they follow the comics, she'll be dead in the present.

Originally, Aquaman's brother was a human (though still improbably named Orm) but in this version they seem to be going with the new 52 which is that Queen Atlanna had Arthur with Tom, and then later had Orm with some Atlantean dude, making Orm a full Atlantean but still the 2nd born.

[up] Though there is a theory that Orm may also be a half-breed as Arthur is stronger than a typical Atlantean due to being half-blooded yet Orm can match him in strength naturally meaning there might be something up with that.

I believe his mother was revealed to still be alive in a recent storyline.

[up] Well that makes me very happy to be hype for this film. I sure as hell don’t want to commit suicide if it turns out bad.

Good. They're likely moving it forward in the U.S. as well. The 21st is going to be messy with Bumblebee and Mary Poppins opening.

[up] Alita: Battle Angel will also be released on the same day as Aquaman and Bumblebee. I have a feeling Alita might end up being the loser of the holiday box-office brawl, but it is going to be a crowded season for films.

I think they all will lose, except Mary Poppins which plays to a different audience, plus, the Disney remakes are always crazy successful.

According to these responses, it's a solid film, but not particularly amazing. Comparable to a Phase 1 Marvel movie. For this film, after the disaster that was Justice League, that might just be enough.

…This basically shows the whole movie, doesn't it.

Well, it certainly looks watchable. Can't tell if it will achieve more than that though. I guess it's better for the DCEU to play it safe for now.

Wouldn't say it shows the whole movie, at least no more than any genre savvy viewer could expect. It's basically two scenes outlining the central conflict (finding the Atlantis temple in the Sahara and the rooftop chase) and includes all the same basic material we got from the first trailer.

Now Black Manta looks badass. It's actually rather similar to my feelings about the Joker in Suicide Squad, by itself may look goofy but put into the proper setting (for the Joker it was the nightclub with other tattoo'd and pierced criminals) it becomes world building. They gave Black Manta the comics helmet but made the body more armored while pairing him next to a couple other armored Atlantean soldiers. I like too how even those nameless guys are running through walls and fighting intelligently against the heroes, mooks are too often diminished into "easily outsmarted and dispatched" territory.

Looks decent so far. And considering the DCEU so far, I think I'll be fine with it just being decent.

That trailer is giving me so much hope. Looks fun, really nice set pieces and action, promising character interaction. And most importantly, he's wearing the classic Aquaman colors.

I really, really wanted to like this, but practically every line in the trailer sounds so cliche and hackneyed, and they've really gone with an immature dudebro character for Aquaman.

I didn't enjoy watching the trailer, so I think I'll think I'll skip the movie unless the reviews are unusually good.

So I'm hearing this is looking pretty good.

You know, Aquaman being the second big hit of the DCEU would be justice for the years upon years of shit he's taken for Super Friends.

For that reason alone, I'm cheering for him.
