I've played it for like what, maybe 6 hours?
It's been a fun enough game but I think it shows why looking back to the past when it comes to JRPG's is not necessarily the best thing to do.
I was interested until you mentioned Squeenix.
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984Price is a little higher than I think the game's worth.
Up until I've played, yeah it's not worth 40 dollars, not from a "this game is only x hours long" standpoint, but from a general "this isn't THAT great" one.
tbh, its kinda boring. I think it could've done a much better job of blending the old with the new.
Warrior to the very end! My tumblr, dood!I'm personally enjoying myself although I'm still trying to figure how some of the systems in the game work and I'm already 20 hours in. Also I've only had about 4 different fights where I really needed to think how to actually kill the thing cause the usual RPG strat of kill it fast didn't exactly work.
Hyped for Hyperdimension Neptunia V 2That's part of what I was getting at.
I'm finding enough enjoyment to keep playing, but compared to something like say, Bravely Default, which had problems but still made an effort to modernize, streamline and innovate a lot of JRPG conventions, this feels too antiquated.
I feel that this is the real danger in this "we need to go back to our roots" mindset that some players and developers have. Speaking plainly...there are a lot of things in old JRPG's we don't really need to keep propagating.
I have to agree. Final Fantasy has gone down the toilet lately, but just trying to purely retread the FF 7/8 style isn't going to make a worthwhile game.
If you want a Genre Throwback that works, Last Dream is a good example of how to do it. It's a love letter to FF 1 that actually makes for an interesting game in its own right.
The 1st part of the game is kinda boring. The game is far better once you're past the 10th hour. You have more people in your team, more Dual and Triple Tech. The battles goes faster and the bosses starts to become a challenge.
^So it follows the classic 90s JRPG thing of "First 10 hours are boring"?
I sort of agree, but it's still a pretty easy game if you want it to be for one big reason.
The spritnite eaten monsters give way too much EXP. The first one you meet gives you 1k when most other monsters give you like 50-60, I leveled up like 5 times from that. Not long after there's a group of foxes which are much more dangerous but still beatable with the right setup and they give you 3K.
- Anyways I'm pretty close to beating the game. It did get more enjoyable gameplay-wise later, but plot-wise and overall it was just kind of average. Fun enough to keep playing, but everything I said in my prior post stands, it's a pretty basic "adolescent friendship wins over all" JRPG story that isn't that compelling. For a game that's built on the theme of sadness it's kind of a letdown.
There are only like two instances of the writing being all that interesting, them being the monster boy and the fides sidequest which concludes his story, and kir's sidequest with the sisters turning on him and the younger one not being able to speak because her throat got crushed. Hardly excellent but if the game had overall been more like those instances it would have certainly been much more enjoyable and interesting.
I started a page for the game, please give it some love.
Square Enix decided to make a old school 90s JRPG with modern graphics. Here's a trailer.
Discuss the game here cause lord knows there are some things in this game that needs to be explained by another person or troper. That and some tips when you eventually reach certain bosses. Hyped for Hyperdimension Neptunia V 2
