All Pokemon can understand simple spoken commands, but it's still noteworthy for the Pokedex when a Pokemon can just straight-up understand English.
I interpret "understand" as "being able to respond in the english language through telepathy"
The Pokedex isn't super reliable or consistent as a source anyway.
There's a reason Magcargo's temperature is a meme.
The pokedex was written during a holiday in which all the pokemon professors got together and got just completely blitzed on cheap booze

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders!I always thought the Pokedex was crowdsourced a.k.a. a wiki. The writers are all kids. Professors just approve of it and it becomes official.
They could always approve it while drunk of course.
My DA account... I draw stuff sometimes!I'm fine with the pokedex, because Pokemon are inherently fantastical creatures in themselves.
The pokedex entries are just an extension of it.

Watch SymphogearThe way I see it is that since the series takes place in an alternate universe Earth the Laws of Physics from our Earth don't really need to apply to it so I'm willing to take the Pokedex at face value as a result.
I feel a bit weird about the Pokedex. Some of the stuff seems like pretty reasonable lore (Absol predict disasters, small pokemon nest on Torterra) that wouldn't come up in games but some just seems crazy outlandish even for a fantasy world. Also, a lot of the numbers are kind of weird but I respect that it isn't worth putting much effort in there.
Yeah, I just assume that everything in the Pokedex is 100% fact and anyone who tries to argue with it based on logic, measurements, and physics needs to be reminded that the Pokemon world is not our world, doesn't necessarily run on the same logic or have the same systems of measuring, and DEFINITELY doesn't fuction with the same laws of physics.
I honestly don't for the simple fact that a lot of them are just flat out stupid and many mostly sound like dick waving on the part of the Pokemon. I mean I guess it could be canonical for Macargo to be hotter than the sun, but as that never comes up in the games it doesn't really matter.
You make it sound like the Pokรฉmon write the entries themselves.
"Machamp gets all the bitches."
Oh God! Natural light!"Bisharp is the coolest mutherfucka around."
"Gallade is much cooler than Bisharp anyday."
"Bisharp thinks that Gallade is full of shit."
"Gallade thinks that Bisharp should shut their trap or have it shut for them."
"Scrafty wins in the dick-measuring contest between Bisharp and Gallade without even entering."
"Mewtwo is the strongest. It's definitely not insecure at all, hehehe..."
It's been 3000 yearsโฆSorta with Hashil on this one.
To me saying "BUT IT'S THE POKEMON WORLD THINGS ARE DIFFERENT" is mostly a Watsonian Hand Wave to excuse Game Freak, who either has no sense of scale most of the time and/or just cares about how cool stuff sounds.
Something I figure might be a thing in this is an emphasis on double battles.
We see Hau and Lilly traveling with the hero on a boat. Maybe they'll be around much more often than usual partner characters and even walk with you regularly through trainer populated areas? Maybe you'll even be able to pick one or the other and sort of form a party with them?
I was listening to a thing about how the game is mostly single battles in the story, but official competitive play focuses on double battles, and the way things are going reveal wise there definitely feels like an emphasis on competitive shake ups.
And with the prominence of the friends/rivals in the story, maybe they can tie it all together and ease players into double battles through the story itself this time.
It's going to be incredibly interesting to see what Rotom's Pokedex entry is going to be since it is possessing the Pokedex this time.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."I wonder if you'll get an entry for it automatically as a result of that.
I think we've seen the pokedex only going up to the starter (as it normally does when you begin) so probably not.
Dex!Rotom is a bit weird when you think about that you technically have two Pokรฉmon at the start of the game, but the other one refuses to fight at all.
Unless we can use Dex!Rotom in battle?

Maybe you have to earn its respect and you get the ability to use it in battle after you either beat the evil team, the final gym leader, or the Champion.
It's been 3000 yearsโฆOr being a Pokedex takes up most of its time and energy, or it's not that easy for it to leave the 'dex on a moment's notice, so it's just not practical for it to battle for you. Then you can have the dex get an upgrade along with unlocking the National Dex that frees up Rotom so it can join your team.
You've always had to go somewhere specific to change your Rotom form before so it's not surprising if that's still the case.
So,are news coming out in 24 hours?
