Things would work out better if all these developers (DICE, Infinity Ward, Treyarch, et al) would learn how to properly shift gears when the time is right by rotating settings, instead of working on one incessantly until people become fucking nauseous. I guess to be fair, that sorta kinda happened from 2008 to 2012 with CoD, which saw Darker and Edgier WW 2 -> Modern Warfare in the style of Michael Bay -> Cold War -> Modern Warfare in the style of Michael Bay (again) -> Future.
If DICE's WW 1 experiment becomes a hit, I just hope it doesn't launch another trend that will not die and will be resented as a result.
Unless Battlefield One (which is something of a confusing title) sells REALLY well, it's unlikely WW 1 will become the new military shooter. Usually something needs to break some kind of sales record for copycats to happen.
How is anti-air going to work in this game? I know there were anti-air cannons to take down zeppelins in WW 1, but I don't think any of those were capable of taking down airplanes.
Machine guns and rifles harvested LOTS of planes from the sky. Including that arch backstabbing murderous prick in the red triplane - who got slotted either by a machine gunner with a Lewis Gun, a machine gunner with a Vickers heavy machine gun, or an infantryman armed with a Lee Enfield SMLE Mk III rifle. And NOT by the pilot who claimed credit for years afterwards.
There was also the 37mm pom-pom as well as several AAA guns.
Consider planes at the time apparently where slow enough it was fully viable for a pilot to gun down enemy pilots using a sidearm, I imagen players on the ground can do it, as well as use AA guns.
Yeah, you didn't need big anti-aircraft guns that could puncture metal like in World War 2. When your planes are made out of canvas and wood you could take them down with a rifle, if you hit it in the right spot.
If anyone's interested, there's an interview up on Venture Beat with EA DICE's lead designer about the game.
Here's a choice quote:
Berlin: It’s definitely rooted in history. There’s no alternate mix of anything else. All the stuff you see is equipment that was available. All the vehicles you see were available at this time.
Games Beat: No time travel?
Berlin: No time travel. This is our depiction through a modern lens, looking at World War One, the Great War.
So apparently, this is supposed to be as closely rooted to history as possible. No Alternate History here. Which is kinda odd considering some have noticed the cover◊ appears somewhat anachronic when it comes to the soldier and what's on him. One commenter noted the following:
What do you guys think?

Perhaps he scavenged a lot of those German stuff? I don't think that would necessarily be unusual in a War like this....
Formerly known as Bleddyn And I am feeling like a ghost Resident Perky GothWasn't the scavenging for those sorts of weapons not allowed in those times?
I honestly wouldn't know. I do not know a lot of World War 1 beyond the basics. I am only assuming that he might of scavenged the German gear because the Great Wars got really nasty at times.....
Formerly known as Bleddyn And I am feeling like a ghost Resident Perky GothWell note he said rooted in real history, not that it is a simulation of it, some liberties, for the sake of creating a exciting, "cool" game aesthetics will obviously be taken, if there is indeed character customization for multiplayer, I imagen there will be option to mix minor details from different nations, similar to cover guy.
Yep. Not to mention that some things are going to be left behind in a war where you GTFO of a trench that's in danger of being overrun by the enemy.
He's also apparently a American, even though the Americans used American and French weapons back then, not German ones.
ah, but what colonial would say no to say... a Lee-Enfield?
advancing the front into TV TropesThe guy probably picked it up. Mausers were highly valued as war trophies back in the day.
Or we'll just have some weird thing where he has it for no reason. Like how in BF 4 your captain has a MP-412 as his personal sidearm with absolutely no explanation as to how or why he's using a Russian made revolver that never entered production.
Oh really when?trophy?
advancing the front into TV TropesWar trophies. Like guys took Lugers from Nazis in WW 2.
Yeah the C96 was considered to be a pretty nice one. Doubly so if you got one in 9mm.
Oh really when? And the Americans didn't really do anything in WWI until near the end (Even though the stuff they did do really helped), so it kinda bothers me that they are again using a American soldier on the cover. The British were the main good guys for WWI. Might be to sell the game because patriotism, though.

and, can't believe I'm saying this... The French, but the Yanks need it to be about MURICA to sell well
advancing the front into TV TropesDidn't some Americans come to Europe to fight before America officially entered the war?
probably, I think they came in through Canada, like in WW 2, but they would have been in such few numbers it would barley be a blip on the radar

advancing the front into TV TropesYeah, there's plenty of stuff for variation and customization in the Great War if DICE wants them (which they do). Just most of them are dreadfully uncommon compared to the humble bolt-action rifles the vast majority only got - which is hardly an impediment to the series of course, that's been the case since the first! But I'm sure they won't allow the customization of "Literally buckets/sandbags of grenades" after the years of balancing Grenade Spam.

You want to know why we've had this whole massive wave of modern military shooters (those of you in the know should already know what Yahtzee and me prefer to call them so I won't say it at this moment)?
Because we had so many WW 2 themed games that the publishers of them eventually saturated the market, no one bought them towards the end, and we as players cried out for something new.
Well, there is a proverb - be careful what you wish for.
