I already asked this in Ask The Tropers, but was informed that I should ask it here instead.

Can In Name Only be applied to characters from a derivative work, or is the trope limited to the derivative works themselves.

Yeah, a character that copies another character is an Expy, but that trope also sees a lot of misuse.

The priority topic of In Name Only is about the adaptation as a whole compared to the original. I think individual characters are okay, so long as that is made clear that it's talking about the adapted character and not the entire work.

Thing is In Name Only runs heavily into Trope Decay where people label any changes to the work, character or just being a bad production as In Name Only. It should be pretty dramatic, where it is unrecognizable to the source material rather than superficial changes.
