The limitations and gimmicks of the Wii really hampered Super and many other games. How many actions could you fit on a regular controller?

The limitations of the Wii were non-existent...

They chose to only use the side-ways Wii-mote and that was just a mistake.

I don't remember feeling like there was anything I couldn't do, control-wise, that I could have done in TTYD. That said I do remember not being a fan of the complete departure from Mario World character aesthetics.

I remember hoping it would come out for Gamecube XD

Also I found something neat about Origami King if you die to the first Not-Bottomless Hole.

I actually played SPM before 1000 Year Door which was definitely an interesting experience. As someone with a weakness for 2D platformers in general (and Nintendo just barely getting back into Mario ones at that point with NSMB) I really loved it. I think I forgave the general weirdness and non Mario elements as just being a staple of certain RPG spin-offs, not unlike how Seven Stars and Mario & Luigi had their own unique enemies and settings.

Still waiting for a Legion of Losers movie...

Super was actually my first Mario game, and it is highly non-indicative of what the rest of the series is like.

For one thing, most Mario games don't have hamster wheels in them. Big point against Super.

Is it just me or do Mario and co. feel tangential to Super Paper Mario?

I can kinda see that. The story is kind of a regular RPG with Mario window-dressing and platforming, and Tippi and Count Bleck's romance is what saves the day in the end.

I also think that the lore of Super Paper Mario (especially in regards to the Tribe of Ancients and its subgroup called the Tribe of Darkness) is not what someone would expect from a Mario game.

Luigi being an Apocalypse Maiden never really sat right with me. (I always played as him in the 2D games so that may be why.) At least with Peach in TTYD it could've potentially been anyone who got possessed by the Shadow Queen as long as they were in the same room.

....Imagining Shadow Queen!Mario is hilarious.

I agree that Luigi got the short end of the stick in Super Paper Mario. He got brainwashed twice, caught in an explosion, and fused with someone against his will.

I only watched Paper Mario: The Origami King but I enjoyed that game too, especially Olivia.

TTYD remake was rated by the ESRB today.

Probably too late to mention, but I recall people noticing that in the reveal trailer for the PM:TTYD remake, not only can you see a pipe outside the Mario Bros.' house, but you can also see the rest of the Bros' house. In the original game's opening scene, there were neither of those things.

Could it be a sign that the PM:TTYD remake will let us explore the Mario Bros.' house and Toad Town, like in the first PM game?

Incidentally, have we got any insight about what convinced them to finally do the TTYD remake? Was it because they saw how much we were bellyaching that it was the best one in our collective opinion? If so, I wonder if its financial performance will influence the direction of the next new Paper Mario game.

If Nintendo actually did it because we kept whining about it, then it's probably the first time they've ever caved to fandom pressure ever.

It might indeed be an experiment to see what makes Paper Mario popular though.

I guess it might have to do with Gamecube being kind of a "lost child" in terms of re-releases. There was no Gamecube virtual console on the Wii, Wii U, or Switch.

We've had Gamecube re-releases on the Wii and Wii U, but only a few, and its been awhile. They've kind of started up again on the Switch with Metroid Prime Remastered and Pikmin 1 + 2.

So I think its really just 1) Knowing there's a market for them and 2) Knowing if they don't do a re-release, people will just spend their money on the original in a way that gets them nothing.

Since the Wii could play Gamecube discs, there was no need to re-release them on the Wii. Can the W.U. play Gamecube?

It did have a full Wii Emulator, so it could play Wii U games. I used it to re-play Skyward Sword.
