If they're not going to believe it then there isn't much sense to saying anything. It'd just be annoying folks at work at that point. I'm picking my battles once I hear that stuff from people.

It’s possible they’re simply misinformed, so there’s no harm in laying out the facts. If they hold onto their belief in spite of fact that’s a different story.

They should have sent a poet.

If people get annoyed simply by being given sources of hard data, that says a lot about them.

[up][up]I think that might be what he's getting at: people choosing not to believe in man-made climate change, because (the way I see it) if they did, they'd have to do something about it.

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."

Even if they do acknowledge it, deniers usually just go on to the next "stage" of climate change denialism: "Okay so it's happening and it's our fault...but it's too late to do anything about it so why bother trying to change?"

And while this mindset isn't limited to older people, it is easier to adopt it if one is old enough that one is less likely to live to actually suffer the full consequences of climate change.

Also...Generation X. Generation Y. Generation Z. What comes after them? I've heard we were switching over to the Greek alphabet, with Generation Alpha being the one to follow Generation Z.

Eh, if we reach Generation Omega, we're probably doing okay.

Not sure what we'll switch to after Omega...but none of us will live to see that barring the invention of some really good life-extending treatments.

I always figured switching to Greek would be the most logical move.

About Generation X not caring earlier. I have read reports that a lot of them are actually more accepting and more diverse than previous generations. The problem I am seeing is that they are growing up on the post internet boom and they are constantly getting bombarded with horrid news and such which desensitizes them to the whole thing very early on.

The other issue is that the alt-right is constantly trying to target them through the internet and sadly in some cases it seems to be working

As a member of Gen X, thanks for generalizing the most diffuse generation on record. Again.

The reason why we acquired the "Gen X" tag in the first place was because marketing departments across the Western hemisphere had a really hard time finding distinguishing features for us. So, yeah... when you can't easily stereotype (well, minus "a bit more interested in these new-fangled video games and indy music of styles we don't understand than traditional media and music", stick an X on it and call 'em "disengaged" rather than "diverse".

We're also the "latchkey kids".

[up][up]???

Anyway... the whole thing about these generational divides is bollocks, if you ask me.

It's all driven by marketing departments trying to pigeonhole demographics. But, since the arrival of the internet, there are no hard-and-fast boundaries on seeing/ hearing media and styles of dress/ thinking from previous generations or form vastly different cultures quite like their once was.

There are just more subgroups and cultural groups out there and actually visible than there used to be when the lens was much narrower.

So, yeah: generalisations are tougher to make than they were. Starting with (but not limited to) Gen X.

There have always been ignored cultural groups messing up the filing system. Even Boomers aren't an amorphous blob. Although they have pretty much always been adjusted to rather than been expected to adjust — simply due to the numbers. :/

Don't look now, but India has Boomers rising up the population graph (and countries up and down Africa are poised). And, these ones are not from the late '40s, but the infrastructural network built to accommodate them? Should look familiar.

China is weird: it tried to stop its Boomer Gen from becoming a thing. With... mixed success.

Its why the generation after Z is being called Generation alpha, the generation that is born between 2010-2025.

And yeah, I meant the ones who say "I have personally seen this before. I grew up with this. This rash of storms is nothing new. It will pass for a while and come back."

While I know individual nightmare storms aren't anything new, the frequency seems to be.

With climate change is two stuff: one is kinda sort hard to understand at times, specially because is something that strech centuries or years in area too big to feel it, so is easy to just stach everything into "weird stuff"

And the second is a somewhat naturalistic value that climate is kinda like a god, it just exist and will always exist.

For what it's worth, I was taught in school from very early on that "man-made climate change" (as in, humanity is significantly contributing to shifting the climate of the planet) was a real scientifically documented fact. So it was weird to me that it was such a contested issue until I realized that it was basically just political groups turning it into one because it goes against their profits.

Climate change denialism is on the same level as intelligent design in the US, and often sponsored by the same lobbies (corporatism and evangelicals are good bedfellows, whodathunk).

The climate change denialism seems to usually stem from willful ignorance or corporations making money off destroying the Earth.
