Hirane Rooftops

Gasping for air, Emery followed Fei to the point where she deposited half of her goods onto the rooftop. If she were planning to distract Emery then the effort was in vain; the goods had little risk of being snatched again in an out-of-sight place like this, so their collection took less priority than Fei's capture. Emery hopped over the pile, putting on another burst of speed from her rapidly dwindling reserve.

The guard was slowing down. Yes! Fei put on another burst of speed and jumped over a particularly long pause in the rooftops. Maybe she will finally be rid of this pest.

"Erm," Alphonse quickly added up how much he thought the meal was worth and said, "That'll be 50 gold please." He hoped that the customer had enough money to pay for the dish.

Aldivn gives 52 gold pieces to Alphonse.
"Keep the change, owning a restaurant is a tough business."
He walks outside, waves bye, then looks up to the rooftops to see the commotion.

Hirane Rooftops

Aldivn would be in time to see Emery leap across the large gap between buildings. She landed right on the edge of roof, but after a few precarious moments was able to regain her balance and take off again.

"You're a decade too early to think you can shake me off so easily!" Indeed, while Emery was loaded down with armour, she had age and experience on her side. Along with a stubbornness that made her an ideal choice to protect the city- or, in this case, chase ne'er-do-well's through it.

"In all that is tricky and theiving, does she never give up?!"

Fei looked behind her and realised something. She ran across a few more rooftops in a very different direction to the one she was going before, and jumped down onto the ground. In armour, there was no way that guard would make it easily.

Hirane - Shrine of Restoration

The dwarf seemed satisifed, which pleased Abigail.

"Thank you, I will keep that in mind. And thank you again for your help today."

Well, it wasn't like Abigail could afford posting any more quests for a while now. She'd expended her funds for unexpected expenses for this month, and she couldn't keep handing out Blessing of Owesis for free. It was usually a very expensive boon, used by adventurers who had ample funds and wanted to get more. Maybe she had to think of a different reward for future quests.

The Copper Grill

He blinked in surprise for a second at the extra money before his brain started working again and he put the gold in a large blue pouch on his belt.

He was about to ask Aicha about whether things like that ruckus outside happened often and what kind of foods she liked when a large party of adventurers piled in. The leader, a Centaur adorned in all kinds of jewellery to the point where it physically hurt for him to look at the beams of sunlight shining through the gems, walked up to Alphonse who started covering his eyes with his hands.

"Attention! Good sir, we have need of a feast to celebrate our glory! For we have sunk into the depths of Monmoth and found awesome treasure! And Leticia here," she gestured at a Kaitan girl with a frilly hat who waved at him though Alphonse could barely see anything else beyond the hat and hand with the jewels still shining in front of him. "said that this place had fantastic food and drink when she was there to break her fast! And thus we came here to drink and feast!"

"Alright then," with left hand still stuck to eyes to avoid the glaring light, Alphonse went to his counter, picking up a large piece of paper, and handed it to the leader. "Right then, sit over there," he said, pointing to the back where there was less sunlight to shine on the Centaur's armor, "there's more space so your group can eat together, you'll have to put the tables together though. Could you have your group write your orders on that menu, please?"

"Of course! We shall gladly do this! But know that we would all like some mead for refreshments before eating!" She took out a pen and started writing her order.

Alphonse helped the adventurers move their tables together and then retreated into the shade of the kitchen. Blinking a bit to finally get used to the fact that there wasn't constant glaring light in his eyes, he started counting the party of adventurers. Alphonse took a deep breath as he started pouring eleven cups of mead, thinking about how much he'd have to cook and how he should probably hire some staff this week.

Hirane, The Copper Grill

Aicha alos grew curious about the noises, since she had finished her meal by that point she got up, as the adventurers got in she also had to shield her eyes, which only served to drive her out even faster, as she got past Alphonse she gave him a generous amount of gold, likely too much, though today she got so many orders so she could afford this. After that she turned around "Oh, and this stuff in the book seems edible... tasty even... if you like rats. Maybe make me some in the future."

Hirane, Charging Bear Inn

Magnus sighed, they were right. But it couldn't be changed in the end they just could hope that the war wouldn't errupt in the first place. "But enough with that talk, you know what, as compensation for my absence the next round goes on my tab aswell." He could literally see his gold dwindling away, but he thought keeping up the morale was part of his job.

Hirane, Temple District, Shrine of Restoration

With a last nod the Dwarf went out of the shrine, heading to Monmoth again to use the boon as much as possible before it would wear of.

"Another round? Alright then!" Cecilia said enthusiastically, heading behind the bar to pour some fresh ale into the mugs. She got about two done before the door opened and another small party of adventurers came in; the lot of them looked a little worse for wear, but one in particular, an orc warrior, currently had some kind of harpoon stuck through his shoulder, prompting a near gag from Cecilia. "By the ashen wastes, what are you doing!?!" she yelled, walking over to them.

The lead of the party held up a hand and started to speak in an attempt to be reassuring, "oh don't worry ma'am; we just need a room and we'll- OOF!" He got cut off as Cecilia grabbed a broom and jabbed the end of the handle into his gut.

"I'll have no adventurers trying their hand at bleeding out in my beds tonight! Out! Out! I'm taking you to a healing shrine right now!" Cecilia instructed the orc fervently, whacking at his shins with the broom head until he wandered back out the door. She paused before leaving, turning to look back at Magnus. "Keep these other idiots from stealing any of my stuff, and the next round's on the house" she told the guard captain, then followed the orc outside, yelling insistently at him all the way to the Shrine of Restoration.

The Copper Grill

Alphonse carefully, very carefully, slid the wooden tray holding the eleven stone mugs of mead onto one of the tables. He hoped the size would satisfy them this time after being told the first time that they were too small and that every single one of them would require extra large servings. Once he finished pushing the tray, the customers eagerly grabbed the cups and began chugging down. Alphonse, resting his arms from carrying such a heavy load, read the long list of food that the adventurers asked for.

He tapped the leader's shoulder.

"Yes! What do you need, chef!"

"So, this list of food that you fellows want, do you want this all at once, or do you want to me parse this out in segments?"

The centaur stroked her chin, which surprisingly enough was not covered in jewels. "A fine question! I think we shall prefer for you to give us the flambéed ham in honey as a starter and then go from there! What say you!" She gestured to her other party members who were too busy drinking and laughing. Only one of them, a bespectacled elf, piped out in a thin voice that cut through the chatter, "I think it to be a superb idea, Grunhilde."

The centaur nodded and patted Alphonse on the back with her gloved hand, pushing him in the direction of the kitchen, "Go, chef! Serve us our refreshments!"

Rubbing his back, he started looking for the ham, wondering whether he had honey or not and if he could find an acceptable substitute for it.

Hirane Central Bank, Third Office

Drat! Bramwell had not found anything that resembled food. He decided to fully focus his attention on the elf standing in front of him, deciding that his neglect of her was causing this delay. "Well, ma'am, do you need any help with your deposit beyond filling out the form?"

Hirane - Shrine of Restoration

Once the dwarf had left, Abigail went to work on the fresh sacrifice. She hauled the deer outside behind the shrine to where she usually did these more messy ceremonies of sacrifice, and put on a thick cloak over her priestess habit. She started off the ceremony by putting a white cloth where the killing wound had been inflicted, letting the blood soak it through. Then she went to work with a sharp knife, speaking prayers to Kactia as she took made a neat incision into its underbelly and removed the heart. She held the heart above her head, to let it catch the last rays of the sunset while she spoke the litany of the hunt. Next, she took the knife to the neck of the deer and neatly disembowelled it. The head was to put on the altar to Kactia inside, once the blood had been drained.

Then came the final part of the ceremony, which usually was the hardest for newly initiated clergy. After thanking Kactia for all of her gifts and blessings, Abigail bit into the raw and bloody heart and started eating it. Roasting the heart was allowed in scriptures, but Kactia preferred it to be raw. And honestly, so did Abigail. It awoke a feeling of euforia in the half-Fallen, and she made sure to eat the whole thing instead of just the necessary bite and swallow. She'd foregone her afternoon meal precisely for this reason.

Once that was over with, Abigail started cleaning up the mess. A butcher's assistant would be coming by to pick up the carcass later, and it would be skinned and processed during tomorrow. The shrine would receive a percentage of the products afterwards. After having cleaned the backyard and herself, Abigail went back inside the shrine to proceed with her other duties. From here on out, the returning adventurers would start arriving to receive healing and resurrection, so she would be busy.

Shrine of restoration

It was not long after Abigail came back in from her outdoor ritual that a patient arrived; as well as Cecilia, still prodding the orc along with her broom. "Priestess, would you please see to this idiotic adventurer before he bleeds out somewhere in town?" Cecilia asked, pointing to the orc. The orc glanced down at the harpoon like projectile still sticking through his shoulder, then at Abigail.

"It looks worse than it is" the orc adventurer muttered somewhat dismissively.

Shrine of Restoration

"Welcome, miss Stout," Abigail said with a smile, recognizing the innkeeper. "Leave it to me."

It wasn't uncommon for wounded adventurers to seek out the inn before the shrine, she had been taught. Many foolhardy adventurers believed that a good night's sleep would heal any wound, and quite a few had died because of it. Still, this was something of a serious example if that was the case...

"Now, let's see," the priestess said, leaning in close and examining the wound. "Please try to not move. This will not hurt, but it may feel uncomfortable."

Abigail laid her right hand on the orc's shoulder, her holy magic immediately removing any sensation of pain as she studied the wound. Orcs usually had a high tolerance to pain, but she wasn't taking any chances. Murmuring prayers to Ywheia, Abigail made the muscles and flesh that the harpoon had pierced slowly make way so that she could extract the missile. At the same time, she had to put in place temporary magical bloodvessels to keep the bloodflow going, which complicated matters. Healing magic was never straightforward if you want to do things right.

Once the harpoon was out, however, it was easy enough. She purified the wound of infection and potential poisons, then set up a healing enchantment around the wound, and let the flesh start knitting itself together. Then, she reconnected the original bloodvessels and other important fibres that shouldn't be left to grow back on their own. Once she was sure everything was put together right, she tied off the enchantment so that it would keep going until the healing was done. This was a procedure that many field clerics could not use because of the great magical power that was necessary, but a healer in her temple had much greater reservoirs to draw from. As a finishing touch, she set a monitoring rune of Ywheia on the Orc's right hand, the sigil glowing a faint light blue.

"It will take a few hours for the enchantment to finish its work," Abigail explained. "Wait until the rune has faded completely before engaging in strenous activity, such as fighting or exerting the strength of your arm, or your arm might not heal properly. It should be right as rain tomorrow morning."

Of course, Abigail could also force the recovery so that it healed instantly, but it wasn't good for the muscles to regenerate so quickly. It was also much more expensive.

The orc frowned slightly through most of the procedure, but did his best not to let any pain be apparent in his expression. Once Abigail had finished, he stood up and experimentally moved his shoulder around a bit. Cecilia stepped forward now that it was done. "Now what does this man owe you?" Cecilia asked Abigail.

"Me? I didn't even want to come here; you made me. You should be the one to pay for it" the orc said in protest, glaring at Cecilia.

"I'm not the one who had a spear stuck through my arm! Besides, I don't have any money on me" Cecilia argued back.

"It was still your decision, not mine; I'm not paying for something I didn't ask for" the orc stated stubbornly. "That necklace looks nice; how about you trade that to her?" he suggested. Cecilia quickly grabbed her necklace defensively out of habit.

Hirane, The Copper Grill

With her food paid and the recipes kinda out of her head Aicha decided to make her way for the Central bank to stash away her money, she heard of some shopkeepers who stashed their money in barrels in their shop, thinking no-one would look in a barrel full of coal, but it seemed many adventurers couldn't resist smashing barrels... chests... virtually anything really and run away with the stuff they found in there, so getting the money to a bank was much safer.

Hirane, Charging Bear Inn

Seeing the Innkeeper... 'escorting' the adventurers out Magnus took his helmet and stood up, looking a bit at the rest of the people still present so they wouldn't get any ideas, of course he trusted his own men not need that reminder but the few non-guards who were still present maybe would, still, Magnus knew better than to judge adventurers by their looks, there were enough cases of adventurers looking like normal rogues and thugs yet wouldn't steal anything, mostly newer adventurers who couldn't afford their own equipment and had to scavenge it from real thugs.

Shrine of Restoration

Oh dear, oh dear. Abigail somewhat wished she had asked in advance, but the fine print on the sign outside did ask visitors to sort out the economical circumstances first, precisely so that the Priestess inside didn't have to bother with it. There was a big book on the matter underneath the desk (written with the holy guidance of the Aspect of The Written Word, so it was quite hefty), but Abigail didn't want to use it.

"Now now, please calm yourselves," she said in her most calm and serene voice. "This was a rather small operation, so I'll write it down as an act of first aid, which none of you have to pay for."

Of course, that meant Abigail and the shrine would lose money on it instead, but rather that than get on the bad side of either of the two. Although, she wasn't going to let the two of them off that easily.

"However, in the future, I must ask both of you to be more cautious. Master adventurer, that was a nasty wound, and had you waited much longer, you would have risked serious muscle damages as well as a number of expensive infections. The Great Goddess of Health does not take kindly to those who neglect their own condition, and I implore you to seek proper help swiftly in the future."

Abigail's voice was stern, but not unkindly so.

"And miss Stout, the Great Goddess is sure to thank you for the attention that you show to those around you, and her blessings be upon you for making sure this adventurer received proper treatment. However, the Shrine of Restoration is not primarily a charity, and we normally expect to be recompensed for our time and efforts. While we will not turn away those who are not able to pay, those who can pay should do so, in respect of the divine blessings bestowed. If you bring more patients here who have opposed seeking our services, I am afraid we may come seeking payment from you instead. The Great Goddess' blessings will surely be upon you for such an act of kindness and generosity towards your fellow man."

Shrine of Restoration

"It was just a moment of bad luck. There shouldn't be a next time" the orc said, his tone a bit dismissive but his expression faltering ever so slightly. In part because he didn't want to display and weakness and in part because he simply wanted to leave, he promptly did so.

Cecilia meanwhile, was briefly thinking to herself about Abigail's words. The Great Goddess blessing me? Not a chance Cecilia thought. For one was the fact that she was a Fallen One; the historical records were split on whether the volcano in Demonia was a punishment by the gods for the Fallen Ones refusing to worship them, or if the volcano had happened first and the Fallen Ones refused to worship the gods because they would not help. Either way, they saw that death spewing mountain as a reminder of why they wouldn't worship the gods, and all full blooded Fallen Ones of Demonia knew that the gods would never favor them.

But, perhaps more relevant was the whole 'having previously killed lots of innocent people and ravaged a countryside two hundred years ago'. Somehow Cecilia got the feeling that she still had a ways to go before the Great Goddess would stop tallying that against her.

Right now though, Cecilia had to worry about this situation with the shrine and the adventurers that came to her inn. "Priestess, surely we can come to some sort of understanding about this kind of event should it happen again" Cecilia began pleadingly. "I can't just leave this sort of thing alone when they come walking into my inn like that. Nobody wants to stay at an inn where adventurers die in the beds; they start to think that the place is cursed or haunted or something. And you know they can pay for their treatment; they always seem so loaded down with their 'loot' from Monmoth that their trousers are at risk of falling" she continued, shaking her head as she muttered, "sometimes they don't even bother to properly sell it. I found a dagger that had been tossed down a well earlier today."
