This is probably suited better as an article in Sorting Algorithm of Tropes, or maybe a media discussion forum, but i'll just put it here. Simply put, this is my scale from one to ten of how dark a work is. Here is the scale.

1. Nothing dark at all. Usually pre-school shows.

2. Typical comedy level.

3. Still in comedy, but dark stuff happens from time to time. Most comedy films rank here.

4. Where lightness starts to fade. Can still be comedic, but has more than a few dark/emotional episodes/scenes.

5. In the middle. Not that dark, but not that light either.

6. Beginning to get into dark stuff. Lightness is still featured.

7. Fairly dark.

8. Some lighthearted scenes or maybe even an episode or two, but dark as a whole.

9. Mostly pitch black, with a few jokes and lighthearted scenes peppered throughout.

10. The absolute darkest you can get. Pretty much no lightheartedness or jokes to be found.

Simply, in this thread, you can rank works on this scale. Here are some examples.

The Simpsons: Level 3. Mostly light comedy, but a few dark and heavy death-centered episodes.

Futurama: Level 4. Still comedy, but quite a bit of serious emotion.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Judging from what i've read, a 2. Most seem to put it much higher, however.

Here's some more, lumped into categories.

Movies I've Seen that came out in 2014:

The Lego Movie: Level 3-4. Light with dark undertones.

Big Hero 6: Level 3. Some emotional drama from Tadashi's death, but light as a whole.

Earth To Echo: Level 3. Typical kids movie.

Movies I've Seen That Came In 2015:

Home: Level 2. Light comedy through and through, with some emotion.

Pixels: Level 2. Only a few dark scenes.

Goosebumps: Level 4. Pretty comedic, but a fair amount of horror.

Star Wars VII: Level 7. Easily the darkest movie on this part. Has quite a bit of comedy throughout, as well as the adorable BB-8, but is fairly serious and dark as a whole. Some scenes are right out of the Hunger Games.

Peanuts: Level 2/3. Typical kids movie level.

Inside Out: Level 3 to 4. Light, but with quite a bit of heavy drama.

Sonic TV Shows: Ao St H: Level 2. Zany Slapstick Comedy.

Sat AM: Level 6 in season 1, then down to 5 in 2. Nowhere near as dark as everyone says. On the dark side, the general story is somewhat dark, the scenery is as well, and comedy isn't really that present in Season 1. On the opposite end, the humor gets cranked up in Season 2, the heroes always win with no big losses (And the ones that do happen get corrected later on), it doesn't really deal with any serious or heavy themes, and there aren't too many sad or disturbing scenes. Just a bit darker than your typical action cartoon.

Underground: Level 5. Mix of dark and light.

X: Season 1 and 2 are 4s, mixing gagfest episodes with more serious ones, that still have a healthy dose of humor. Season 3 starts out at a level 5, being a bit darker, than edges toward level 6-7 near the end.

Sonic Boom: Level 2. Light comedy, though more mundane than Ao St H (And most Sonic stuff in general)

The highest thing on the scale i've seen is Soylent Green. Easily the darkest film i've seen. Not once is there any comedy or lightheartedness, and not at a single point is there any hope for the hero. An easy 10.

Post other works below.

I'd say that one of the darkest films I've seen, THX-1138, would score about a 9. The world is appropriately crapsack, and while the protagonist alone technically escapes the clutches of the organization restraining humanity, it's not because he 'won' against it - they simply let him go, as it'd take too much time and effort to recapture him, and he wouldn't survive more than a month on the surface. There's cold-blooded torture, mass drugging, murder, and a sense of indifference as to who lives or dies - or whether anyone lives at all. And the new fetus LUH. Just... fetus LUH.

Though I have to agree with Soylent Green's easy 10. Damn, that was dark.

Work hard, increase production, prevent accidents, and be happy.

Other films i've seen

Ferris Bueller is a 2. Just a silly, carefree comedy about a teen's day off.

Airplane is a 3. Silly as all get out, but has a serious threat.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a 3. Similar to Airplane.

The first act of Frozen is 3, maybe a low 4, lighthearted, with some emotional drama with Elsa and the parents. However, the second act is much heavier, with all the comedy sucked out and a feeling of bleakness prevailing. A level 7, possibly reaching 8, an incredible goal for a Disney movie! On average, it's a 5.

And a bonus

Scrubs is a 4, possibly bordering on 5. Wacky comedy abounds, but there is also lots of dark character deaths.
