Tropes Are Tools. This is the policy that TV Tropes goes by. This site dictates that Tropes Are Not Bad and Tropes Are Not Good. They are story telling devices. They are things we notice. By this policy, I've come to believe that there is no such thing as a trope that is inherently bad. But then we have the Bad Writing Index.

By nature, the Bad Writing Index goes against the Tropes Are Tools policy. The whole idea of this index is that the tropes in the index are usually marks of bad writing. But Tropes Are Not Bad, right? And looking at some of the tropes on this index, it seems that they are not bad by nature, contrary to what this index is suggesting. The Invincible Hero may never lose, but is that inherently a bad thing. The arc may be overly long, but could it just be necessary to fit what is needed in there? Sure, the Padding is needless, but what if it's entertaining enough for one not to care? Hell, the very description defies the index by saying many "highly acclaimed works have used these tropes successfully". Then that isn't bad writing.

Really, tropes are not negative by nature. The index is in contradiction with that, and I really feel like that it should go. Tropes Are Not Good and Tropes Are Not Bad. Tropes Are Tools.

Putting this asleep until some of the backlog is cleared. I don't think the case for a thread is strong enough to justify opening.
