Hey, I liked Wixoss.

And it does have homo, so yes, I would recommend it on this thread.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

If we're including videogame adaptations, then Sengoku Basara is a must.

Oh, how could I forget one of my favorite animus, Show By Rock! It has both flavors of homo.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

I liked Wixoss too but some of the drama got very silly at times. Also I was hoping for the anime to show how Ruu was actually really good at BATTORU by showing her coming up with crazy i'll-use-my-catapault-turtle-to-launch-my-dragon-warrior-at-your-castle tier stuff and crushing her foes.

Great openings though.

Sailor Moon had Haruka and Michiru, who the author explicitly said were added to validate same-sex love. Look at any scene of them together and it's clear as anything that they are a couple. It can't be said to have only subtextual homoeroticism.

The Kancolle animation had the strongest, and most disjointed, concentration of yuri tropes I've ever seen, and whether Ooi and Kitakami were meant to be the parody they ended up as is a riddle for the ages.

I'll mention Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu LOVE! for boys' love, though it's more tongue in (brightly blushing) cheek.

When you get to the very strongest examples like Madoka, the question comes up: is it only subtext, or were they prevented by circumstances from starting a normal relationship? (Or in Rebellion's case, if it is happening off-screen.) After all, many straight romances in the medium are never allowed to be open declared; most obviously in harems, but also in action shows where it might distract from the main plot.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

Wixoss was great. Not perfect, but definitely the best ccg I've seen in terms of trying to craft a story that's not a thin excuse to play childrens' card games.

And there's Crystal, where Usagi is pretty clearly bisexual. To the point that some scenes go over subtext and would require more effort to be seen as strictly platonic than not.

Would mentioning Strawberry Panic just be redundant at this point?

I would argue Nanoha Vivid gets as close as possible to actual Yuri without being explicit Yuri.

It's a bit difficult to think of shows that play with subtext before progressing to actual Yaoi or Yuri.

Rebellion is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

There a quite a few shows where the basic premise includes Yuri that I know of: See [[Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid]] for an example.

[up]I forgot about Crystal. But yeah Usagi is totally bi in that. Although Forgone Conclusion and all.

Rebellion is kind of in a strange state because by now it's extremely clear that Homura's actions are driven by romantic love for Madoka, but she also doesn't look to have them reciprocated. It's a pretty twisted case of I Want My Beloved to Be Happy, although the word "twisted" implies that Homura was somehow wrong, which she wasn't.

Urobuchi also at one point stated that Homura's love for Madoka isn't based on sexual attraction but rather a platonic ideal; in other words it's not the "I want to make the sex" love but rather the "I want to handhold and cuddle and be together forever" love.

Also fuck Valkyrie Drive, I've never been so disappointed in my entire life.

The Precure series with pairs are pretty good, Suite Precure is probably the most overt.

Suite Precure also spawned a very fluffy Yuri Doujin series with like 15 chapters, they didn't even have to change the character's personalities.

I also liked Valkyrie Drive well enough, though not as much as Wixoss. But yeah, for that and Strawberry Panic yuri just is the entire point of the show.

Didn't like Strawberry Panic quite so much. Anime with romance as the main genre are usually too overly dramatic for me unless there's a larger plotline or supernatural stuff going on.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.
