Hello, I'm from Croatia and I study Media Studies. Now I'll have to write my first research paper. The topic can be anything. I'd like to write something in relation to a trope or Disney/anime/video games, live-action, homosexuality in movies/series etc... In fact, almost everything on this side interests me haha. Most people around here don't know about tv tropes. Actually, I have never met anyone who does. I wanted to ask you people if there is something that you would find interesting to read? I have a few ideas, but it seems that plenty people have already had the same ideas :/

Thank you very much!

Greetings from Croatia :)

Write what you want to write, not what you think others want you to write.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders!

Not to mention that it's nearly a week later... I hope this isn't due soon. If you still need a place to start, you may at this point want a topic and thesis that you can easily produce solid evidence for.

Thank you for your answers. I appreciate it.

I have already had two topics/arguments in mind (consumerism in in Disney movies or Pixar and the deconstruction of the alpha male). However, my professor did not approve of them.

@ Crystal Glacia30th Hello. No, I have time until mid April. This is my first paper and I am note sure how long it will take. This is why I wanted to start a bit earlier.

@De Marquis Thank you for the suggestion. What do you mean by anti-feminist tropes? I searched tv tropes and I could not find such tropes.

Thank you.

If those two topics that your professor rejected were your top choices, think about why your professor rejected them. Too far outside the scope of the course? Too nonspecific for you to have a focused paper? Too narrow to have enough material to talk about? Not enough hard evidence? Too West Europe/America-specific?

If they gave you any sample topics, or if you have classmate(s) who have had their topic approved, I recommend trying to compare and contrast why they they approve of some other topics, but not those two. You should also re-check what your professor is looking for as the topic of this paper, and then try to find something to say that lines up with your professor's topic guidelines using another of your interests.

But, seriously, write what you want to write. It shows when you're trying to talk about a topic that you couldn't care less about.

And in regards to De Marquis's suggestion, he means that Disney, especially their Princess brand, has a sort of reputation for promoting a specific kind of femininity that is outdated and damaging to young girls. Cinderella and Snow White get accused of this a lot. Peggy Orenstein wrote an article about this phenomenon in New York Times Magazine, and when I took English Composition two years ago, we examined this paper and the values promoted in Cinderella stories as a whole. But if it turns out your professor didn't like your proposed topic of consumerism in Disney media because of the 'Disney' part or because Disney is a very American brand (I have no idea how popular Disney stuff is in Croatia), this may not be a viable option.

Thank you very much for your advice. I appreciate it.

The reason she did not approve of the topics was that they were not very original. She said that I should come up with something more creative. This is why I think that she also won’t approve of the Cinderella/feminism topic. To be honest, I thought that these topics were quite original. Them not being is the reason why I asked on here what topics are controversial and such.

However, I will ask other students if they already have a topic. Thank you! This is a very good idea =)

I would suggest reading through Double Standard to see if anything catches your interest.
