In another news, Star Trek beyond has now grossed $210 million worldwide, from 185 million budget.

Well. I thought this would be a pretty big success, but I was very much wrong.

[up][up]I think with the new Star Trek franchise we're starting to see the law of diminishing returns come into effect. IF (and it's still IF at this point) the numbers keep sucking this badly, they may not make a sequel.

Its foreign numbers are frankly shockingly low compared to its domestic ones.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=startrek2016.htm

being just over half as much. Given usual Hollywood Accounting numbers, it's actually losing money for Paramount at the moment, but then again it's only been out for just over three weeks.

I wonder why Star Trek series tend to do so bad to mediocre in box office. Doesn't it have a huge fanbase?

[up] I've heard that the films are polarizing among fans of the series.

Star Trek has a huge fanbase, but they're mainly fans of one or more of the four TV series, not of the new alternate-universe movies.

The first nuTrek film was my introduction to Star Trek, and I loved it at the time, leading to me watching TNG (great) and some of the older movies (ranged from good to bad). And the Into Darkess was absolute drek. If it alienated me, a new fan, longer-standing Trek fans must have hated it even more for word-for-word ripping off scenes from the best of the original movies without having or deserving any of their emotional impact.

Star Trek's been acting like a generic action movie franchise with the new films, and that's not what fans of the shows are looking for.

yeah, I am mostly an "outside looking in" person when it comes to the fandom, but for all the "Kirk has to fight an alien with a ripped shirt" stuff, the core concept of the original series was always discovery, paired with social commentary and often fairly high concepts. Same with most of the shows which came after. But the movies have always more miss than hit in the first place and the new version is too action oriented. It has its fans, but that is not necessarily the main fanbase.

The Motion Picture and Insurrection tried to be cerebral and guess how they turned out.

I think Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home were pretty popular.

[up] I'm not necessarily against remakes, but the trailer for Ben-Hur put a bad taste in my mouth. Like the writers biggest take away from the original was "that chariot race sure was awesome wasn't it?"

I said my peace on that film in its thread. Sufficient to say that I hope it absolutely bombs.

[up][up] To be fair, it is more or less the only thing most people remember....I admit, I have seen the movie once, and the only part of it I watched again was said race.

Anyway, I don't think that Ben Hur really fits into our currently media landscape. The desire for melodrama is currently fairly low.

I personally remember two scenes where Ben-Hur picks up spears. Whenever he does, awesome thing tends to happen.

And yeah, any film remake made with that kind of shallow philosophy deserves to crash and burn.

Right now, it's nearly impossible to make a good, successful movie with a Biblical background.

-sighs- I wonder when we will get some great remake movies like Scarface or The Departed.

The Departed was good, but it was also an excuse for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to give Scorsese his best director Oscar at long last. When they'd knocked him back, repeatedly, for arguably better and much braver films in the past, like Goodfellas and Taxi Driver.

I have to say I preferred the original Hong Kong film, "Infernal Affairs", to it though.

And? What, did it become only good because of the Oscar? What's even the point of bringing that up?

Now Ghostbusters 2016 have grossed $208 million.

Keep this up and they will probably surpass the box office of Ghosbusters II, unadjusted for inflation.

Meanwhile, the new Ben Hur movie will be lucky if its box office surpasses the $74 million (unadjusted) that the 1959 film made.

Now Suicide Squad has grossed roughly $640 million. Let's see, I'm putting my estimate for the final gross in the range of $850 ~ $900.

Also, The Secret Life Of Pets have grossed $725 million. Estimate for Final Gross: around $820 million.

Jason Bourne has grossed around $350 million. So it definitely made back its production budget ($120 million), but the question is, will it also make back its marketing budget? Personally, I'm a massive fan of this franchise so I hope that this makes enough to get a sequel.

I hope Kubo has legs...but then, it hasn't been released in most of the international markets yet. I haven't seen it myself yet for exactly that reason, but judging by the reviews, Laika did it again and it is high time that they get some recognition for their good work.

A little bit too early to put Kubo and Pete's Dragon on the list....especially Kubo, which hasn't even been released in a lot of countries just yet and is barely in theatres. (Honestly, I hope that Kubo will do well...I haven't seen the movie yet, but Laika actually deserves some good-will based on the movies they released so far, plus, the reviews are very good. I don't get why there is no love for a movie like this, especially since so many people keep whining about wanting original content).

Not surprised that Disney leads the list, though. They have so many of the highest grossing movies of the year under their banner, it doesn't really matter if there are a few bombs inbetween.

When it comes to the question of sequels or reboots is the right way to go...well, reboots are always a hard sell. But some of the highest grossing movies of the year are sequels. The question is not if you should do a sequel, the question is if you should do a sequel if you have actually nothing new to say. The time the studios got away with making a quick buck by doing the same movie multiple times are over.

I think they are also the only studio with billion dollar films released this year.
