Nightmare fuel is not that scary.

Alright, that has bothered me for a while, but I've finally decided to post about this. Let's not tip-toe around this.

Nightmare fuel pages are the worst thing since... Probably Troper Tales. The amount of garbage there is staggering - and no, I'm not even talking about "accidental nightmare fuel" of the "I have trypophobia, so this character is terrifying" kind. I'm talking about many, many nightmare fuel pages cluttered with stuff that's neither nightmarish, nor scary, not even creepy in any way. I'll show you some examples so you can understand what I'm talking about.

> In the climax when the Nabooean pilots make off in their recently-liberated fighters, one of them takes a hit from a gun turret and loses an engine, plummeting helplessly to a fiery crash in the valley below. Imagine what those last moments had to be like for the pilot.

> Chancellor Palpatine: "And you, young Skywalker. We will watch your career with great interest."

> The destroyed merchant's vessel in the opening scene. At that point, first-time viewers have no clue of what happened beyond that creepy ship with the black sails that may or may not have been out of Elizabeth's imagination. When you know about the Pearl and its crew, you have to wonder how horrifying it must have been for them. Their first sight of the Pearl, the attack, the realization that this pirate crew just won't die...

This isn't even close to complete list - even from those pages specifically. Can those things be cleaned up? Should they be cleaned up?

Originally this had a ton of examples with gyazo images, but I've forgot about hotlinking.

I'm not saying I agree with those examples, but they're of an audience reaction. You can't delete them unless they're blatant misuse (i.e. something that would go on the Funny subpage) or they're getting the facts wrong.

I've seen things I'd rather put on the Funny subpage. Probably on the RWBY Nightmare Fuel page, but could be some other one.

As long as the writeup is obviously describing something that the author found scary and they have their facts straight, I don't think there's anything we can do except point and laugh.

Looking through examples I only had issue with the ones that were really vague. For example, on the All Grown Up page:

  • "Interview With a Campfire.". Nearly all of it.

...Can you be a little more specific, please? (This is the only example on the page, by the way.)

"A buddy is a buddy no matter how nutty."

[up] I think you could delete that for being a Zero Context Example.

Yes, "general" examples and ZCEs are as incorrect on a Nightmare Fuel page as they are anywhere else.

The Nabooean pilots one sounds more like Fridge Horror to me. It's not part of the story, its something you have to extrapolate (even if it's obvious, it's not something you're intended to think about).

Pretty much anything can be seen as scary given the right person and the right context, which does make this a bit awkward.

It reminds me a bit of Uncanny Valley, which has always been a pet peeve of mine here. Almost every time I see it pop up, I see it used synonymously with Nightmare Fuel, which is backwards. All Uncanny Valley is Nightmare Fuel, but not all Nightmare Fuel is Uncanny Valley.
