Or, you know, we could just tweak my suggestion. For example, "Made in 1776, burning brightly in 2004", gets around most of the complaints (and sounds a bit better as well).

The gist of rodney's argument, if I'm reading correctly, is that that caption implies that the torches were actually lit in 1776 and have been burning steadily since then.
