I didn't see a topic about this, so I decided to make this; feel free to redirect me if a similar topic exists.

So something I've noticed in the various fandoms, but why do people get so emotionally invested in the pairing of two characters? I can understand getting attached to a certain pairing because even I'm guilty of this too, but I know a lot of you have noticed that fans take it to toxic and obnoxious levels.

Can someone please explain this to me? Anyone who may have experienced it at some point?

The only thing I can come up with is because our society is romance and sex obsessed. And it shows in many many mediums.

I honestly don't know why people take it to such extremes as Shipping Wars, Het Is Ew, and a few other tropes displaying shipping toxicity.

I suspect people like using character shipping as scapegoats to make their own dream relationships happen.

The fact that only 140 characters are allowed here is honestly so disappointing to me.

[up], [up][up]yeah that's part of it.

to be honest i've never gotten it myself, i don't really see fictional characters as outlets for my own romantic desires or anything. it's even more puzzling in series where the romance is not even the focus or just non-existent.

The only time i ever get attached to character relationships is when I care about both characters individually, which is just me being invested in a work in general, and not really anything to do with the "shipping" mentality.

the whole thing is just kinda weird in how obsessive it can get.

I dunno, maybe they are virgins who can't find a true pairing in real life, or maybe they are just obssesed with romance even in a "No Hugging No Kissing" franchise, or maybe they just are bored and they couldn't found something more interesting, or maybe they are just reflecting their own real life existing pairing (yeah, I know people who do this, they already have a real life (wo)man and stil they love ship two characters because those characters remind him/her real life relationship), or maybe they are just covered on tree sap, or maybe they are a bunch of Trolls.......... .. .. .. To be fair, there is a lot of reasons I can think.

Because we're all human (probably), and humans make lovey-lovey, and take said lovey-lovey seriously.
