How horrible would it be if one has an addiction to rebellion?

An interesting thought crossed my mind.

The main character is afflicted with a particularly hellish (and supernatural) condition.

The character is addicted to rebelling against all forms of authority.

I have already come up with some details of this condition, mainly the description of the symptoms as the condition grows worse over time.

But I want you to tell me your interpretation of what an addiction to rebellion would look like.

If it were up to me, I'd have the rebel start from the top and work his way down. What that means for you is going to vary, depending on what kind of setup your story has (like if there's an evil empire, for example), but for argument's sake? Let's say that there IS an evil empire. What happens then?

The rebel goes after them, obviously. But he knows he can't do it alone, so naturally, he builds a rebellion — and becomes its key figure, of course. He may not be much of a fighter or have political heft, but he has cunning and charisma, and sways people to his side by reminding the downtrodden of the grief they've suffered. It comes to a head with a revolution (of the bloody sort, no doubt), and thanks to the awesome power of the plot, the rebel and his pals win.

Except the story doesn't end there. The rebel has already won the day, but it's not enough for him. So what's left? He uses his charisma — a verifiable cult of personality — to take on the next biggest authority figure. If it's not an authority in his country, then he'll take on the next best thing: the nearest one to him.

So the revolution begins again, and another major power gets crushed while the rebel's forces (and renown) grows. But even that's not enough, so he goes further and further down the line until he rids the world of political rivals — and by this point he's more or less off the rails, but his rebellion pals can't do anything for fear of getting taken to the back shed.

The long and short of it is that the rebel starts of as just another member of the wronged and frowned-upon masses, but ends as a tyrant — one who just keeps smashing anyone with even a hint of power, no matter how minor and no matter how non-threatening they may be. (Maybe he has some potential allies killed just so he could be the toughest guy in the metaphorical room.) He's blind to the fact that he's the biggest and worst authority figure the world has to offer, but it wouldn't matter to him anyway. He never genuinely fought for ideologies or justice, and he definitely isn't fighting for it once he's sitting on the throne. Rebelling is the only thing that satisfies him — like a smoker who needs more and more cigarettes a day, just to get to normal.

And then someone stabs him in the back or something. The end.
