Library

"I found myself attacked by a gang of ruffians outside. Is there a possibility of acquiring one of these buildings in this City? I had heard that a certain Plague Knight has his own lab and I was wondering if the same acoomodations could be made for me?" the Riddler asked with a tricky smile. Before allowing Tairee to answer that inquiry, he continued to talk.

"Secondly, is this library a safe haven for all, no matter the circumstances? Could I hide from enemies or bosses of the day in here? And third, does this place contain any books about the City itself? I noticed a certain literary theme throughout this place - my friend Bookworm would love it here. I too have a fond appreciation for the written word and wonder if perhaps literature holds the key to thriving in the City."

Streets -> Cottage

Arcade chuckled— mostly to keep himself from describing how terrible the city could get. If Anders needed more explanations then he'd give them later. At the moment, he had more pressing issues.

It didn't take much to find a cottage, just a few turns to get the city to shift. Arcade opened the door and took a brief look. The cottage was bright yellow and had several busts of people with extravagant headdresses.

"Anyone in here?" Arcade called, sounding slightly impatient. He waited for a second, then turned back to Anders. "Well, this seems like a nice place to rest," he said.

I say that aloud too sometimes, just: "man, no life."

Nice Cottage, STAY OUT

Anders stepped inside behind Arcade, looking around a bit, taking things in. "Hmm. Seems deserted enough. And...we can just stay here? No undead lurking around corners? ...your undead are strangely friendly, you do know that, right?"

After a moment, Anders shrugged, kicking the door closed behind him a bit idly, then reached into his coat, removing Pounce and setting the kitten down on the floor, letting the cat shake himself out and stretch. "There you go, kitty, I know you get cramped in there. I'll have to get you a proper backpack soon."

Library

Oh, so the pamphlet wasn't just about the library then. That was certainly convenient. Before Makoto could thank Miss Tairee, another stranger burst in to ask his own questions. There was something about his choice of clothing that was making her suspicious, but then again, she was currently dressed like a post-apocalyptic biker so so she supposed that it was hypocritical to judge him. For now. People running around in masks and asking for safe places to hide out definitely set off alarm bells, but it wasn't like Makoto had seen him do anything.

“I’ll… just be reading over there then.” Makoto shot The Riddler a hard look as she left the front desk. She'd be watching him...

"When you die here, you come back to life somewhere else," Arcade said, "I'm pretty sure Lewis and Sans are the only undead around here. They're the only ones I've met, anyway."

He watched with a small smile as Pounce was deposited on the ground. It was too bad cats were extinct in the Wasteland, they were pretty cute. He shook his head slightly and turned back to Anders.

"Anyway, we didn't come here to talk about skeletons, I hope," he said with a smirk.

The hospital

Ben sniffled, wiping his face a bit and listening to Shenhua and Spyro. He nodded slightly, but slumped onto the ground again.

"Yeah... thanks," Ben muttered, feeling drained. "It... it just scares me when people I really care about are in danger..." Ben admitted. "I don't like to think that someone's in trouble and there's nothing I can do to help them and protect them. Especially if it's my friends like Eve, and Lewis, and people like that."

Anders tilted his head. "You say people die and come back like that is a perfectly normal sentence." He shook his head, then grinned a little bit himself. "Well, I'm just...going to accept that, and...also accept that skeletons really aren't the sort of thing to be discussed now. Why don't we...find a more fortified position, so we can put away the supplies where they won't be...stolen, and...so that we can rest without...interruptions?"

He strolled forward, reaching out to hook his arm with Arcade's, chuckling. "I did mention the being a Gray Warden? ...did I include the part where that means I have ah...enhanced stamina and...power?"

"I think I know a better location," Arcade said. He directed Anders to where the bedroom was in the cottage he woke up in that morning. Luckily, the layout was pretty much the same, so they found it quickly.

"That must be useful," he commented as they walked in. He quickly kicked the door closed once they entered.

It was clear to Caboose that this kid wanted to help his friends out and was being told not to. While he definitely would've helped a friend out no matter what it took, people tended to not actually need or like his help afterwards.

"Yeah, friends are important," Caboose began to say. "But sometimes, even though you think they really need your help, it will be better if you don't do anything... at least, that's what everyone says to me after I help them."

"Yeah," Spyro said, sitting down next to Ben and nodding at Caboose. "It sucks when you can't help solve a problem like you want to," he said, thinking back to those rare times when he simply couldn't progress on his adventures on his own. "But sometimes, you just gotta trust others enough that they'll get the job done." Hunter, Elora, Sheila, Bianca, Sgt. "A buffet that cleans and replenishes itself instantly as it is used. It seems that prior to this, it only existed during the days of forced peace" Tester replied to Curly simply.

Library

"You would have to make those accommodations for yourself; you could probably find an empty building that nobody else cares about. That's what 'Plague Knight' did. Strictly speaking no, the library is not a safe haven under all circumstances; you must still follow the rules of the library or else be punished or kicked out, but otherwise yes, nobody may harm you or try to take you captive so long as you're here. There are not any books about this city specifically; there are the pamphlets here. There does exist a book that details the idea of this kind of isolated universe, but it's impossible for you to read it" Miss Tairee answered Riddler's questions one by one at length.

"Anything else?" Miss Tairee then asked him simply.

Hospital

Veela stayed quiet, though this time it was because she wasn't really sure what to add that the others hadn't already said; plus she still didn't know the full context.

Dave was leaning against the wall, and might have just fallen asleep; it was hard to tell.

Library

"Most intriguing..." the Riddler stroked his chin and paced like a four-year old on a sugar rush as he excitedly thought of what these new developlments might hold for him and his future. The library being a safe haven was most agreeable news. Once he had accumulated his gang, he might see about establishing a presence in one of those abandoned buildings the librarian had been talking about but, for now, he would stay here and accumulate knowledge, while also seeking sanctuary for militia members looking for retribution. Besides, he had mentioned on his flyers that he and Garrett had been posting around the city that he would be in the library to screen potential candidates. Hopefully, enough townspeople had seen them to start flocking through the doors.

"Well, you know me Miss Tairee - I'm a rule follower at heart!" the Riddler proclaimed with a mad giggle. "But this book you speak of...you seem to be insulting my intelligence. Are you implying that I am not competent enough to read this tome or that you won't let me?"

Miss Tairee's eyebrows lowered a little. "Actually since I know you're a career super villain, following rules and laws is just about the last thing you do. But no sir, I mean you are literally incapable of reading it" Miss Tairee said plainly, the neutral tone slipping as she typed on her keyboard for a bit.

There was a blur on the desk and a small, simple looking, leather bound book appeared. On the cover it was titled as a 'work diary' with a long number afterward, in Middle Earth Elvish. Due to the city's effects, Riddler could still read the title anyway, despite it being in a language from a completely different world. But once he opened the book to look at the contents...

The contents were in ten dimensional text, creating a geometrical kaleidoscope to look at with bits moving about that literally couldn't exist in a three dimensional space, and yet was anyway; Riddler couldn't make heads or tails of it. The longer he tried to, the more his brain would start to feel numb; if he kept looking at it for a minute or so, he'd pass out.

"Well...that...that is not...it's...put it away you harpy and riddle me this! You use a knife to slice my head and yet you weep when I am dead. What am I?" the Riddler yelled at Tairee before huffily storming over to a table and setting up a sign that read CRIMINALS APPLY HERE.

That book had quite befuddled him and he was not one who enjoyed being befuddled. He didn't even particularly care if Tairee guessed the riddle - he just shouted it out to remind himself just who the master of puzzles really was. Some book was not beyond him! It had to be some sort of trick that made his head spin like that but he would find a way to crack the book. He added it on his list of things to do in the city.

"You mean the Universe Buffet? That's great! Now people won't have to worry about the grocery store running out of food" Curly said a little excitedly. Then after a moment's consideration she turned back to the group for a moment "Maybe after time's up and we're all out of here, we should meet there to plan our next attempt?"

She turned to keep walking just a little faster. And in truth, she had her doubts that everyone would want to go there, Rick, Morty and Eve certainly hadn't come here on purpose. But just maybe a little bribery would make people more inclined to work together for a few hours.

Makoto had been sitting at another table skimming the pamphlet as the Riddler and Miss Tairee spoke, though her attention was now mostly on the Riddler after hearing a few too many alarming words. Okay, he was definitely not a good person, but he still *technically* hadn't done anything she'd consider illegal-

She almost groaned when she saw him run to a different table and set up a sign that very clearly read "CRIMINALS APPLY HERE". Was...was he kidding? This had to be too obvious to be real. No actual criminal would look for other law breakers in broad daylight in a public place. This was ridiculous.

She didn't really know if there was a jail or any real police force in this city yet, but she could at least try and keep the peace while she was stuck here with everyone else. The last thing they all needed was more chaos. The library may be a safe haven, but eventually he would slip up, and then she'd have her chance. Now fully set on her new "mission", Makoto tucked away the paper and stood up, walking over to the man in the suit.

"What's this about a job for criminals I'm seeing?" she asked. Her voice sounded calm, but her red eyes drilled into him from behind her mask, and her hands were still very much holding a pair of spiked knuckles.

"Ah - care to join my crew?" The Riddler smiled. He wasn't entirely sure about this potential recruit - something about the way her eyes bored into him was disconcerting - but he'd give her a chance if she was legitimate. He could use that kind of cold-blooded fury on his team, after all.

He wanted her to join him? Makoto was about to be very offended until she realized that she kind of did look like a thug. This was unexpected, but not necessarily a bad thing. If she could get him talking, then maybe she could squeeze some more information on his allies and plans before she tried to arrest him.

It sort of reminded her of when her father told her stories of going undercover to bust gangs. Besides, a Phantom Thief never went through the front door, they infiltrated through a back way. She liked that thought. A slight smile crossed her face, and her intense glare seemed to lessen.

"If you'll have me, I'd be honored to join forces with you."

"Splendid! I do have need of a gun moll but something tells me that you might be a bit more competent than that. You can prove your competence by helping me out with a little problem that I have with some porcine thugs. I took care of them but more could be done." The Riddler said, not revealing the extent of his altercation with the pig orcs. He wanted to let her imagination concot all sorts of terrible things that might have been done to the militia members.

"They seem to have appointed themselves some kinds of vigilantes or deputies. I'd like for you to scout out how much manpower and weapons their organization has. Maybe pick a fight with some of them if you're feeling ambitious. But I need that information - I have plans for those fools." The Riddler said, running his hands together maniacally just thinking about what he had in store for the militia.

He mentally pictured them outside, still sticky from their confrontation with him, and suppressed a chuckle. While some of his criminal peers (although "peer" was far too generous a term to describe those inferior louts) always resorted to bullets when confronted, the Riddler preferred more humiliating and less lethal methods. Bullets had their place definitely but a bullet only proved that you had a gun and could shoot it. Non-lethally humiliating someone meant that you were better than them. Whether that humiliation was a specially designed Batman death trap or merely incapacitating some militia guards, the Riddler was quite content when he did it to his enemies.

"Oh, and if you see a thief named Garrett handing out flyers, tell him that I'd like to speak with him when he gets a chance." Riddler said, almost as an afterthought

"And you can grab yourself a Tommy gun if you want. I did promise one to the first applicants." The Riddler said, gesturing to the two guns leaned up on the table he was at.

Thugs, huh? So he'd already picked a fight with some people who were acting as authority figures. For his sake, those "thugs" better still be alive when she found them... Once she checked to see if this organization was acting justly, she'd drag him to them. For all she knew, these vigilantes could also be corrupt. And Garret was another one of this villain's associates, whoever her was. She'd make note of him if they ran into each other.

Makoto kept her expression as neutral as possible as she nodded. "Of course, I'll track them down and get what you need. But it'd be a shame if I left before I had a name to call my boss by," she said. "The gang I was in before I ended up here gave me the name "Queen"."

The very real guns on the table made her nervous, but she covered it up quickly. "And don't worry about supplying me with weapons, I have my own." She gestured to the grey, six-chambered revolver on her hip as an example.

The assassin glared at Delta again. "I almost done." It certanly was a heavy hand on her wrist, but it wouldn't be the first time someone tried to negotiate with her with a threat of strength. Besides, she was not lying. She was almost done.

"Is why being a hero is difficult." She hummed, offering the downed Ben a pat on the head. "Yet you a hero and so young. That is admirable." Giving Caboose a mildly amused glance she turned her attention back to Ben. "Will unwrap rope now. Promise you no do anything rash, yes?"

Then, somebody else got her attention, namely the gremlin lady over there. "Aiya, Veela, yes? Find your boy yet?" Shenhua asked with a grin.

"I-I didn't mean to lead her on!" Fastanook said, a bit defensively, but also guiltily.

"Oh come on, at least talk to her! Let her know it won't work out; though I still think it's wrong not to tell her why" Louie said, still frowning angrily.

"I, It's... It's hard for me, to talk to her..." Fastanook muttered, looking very guilty now.

"Gragh!" Louie exclaimed in frustration. "You guys are being jerks and cowards about this! That's it, I'll tell her! I'll explain everything I can!" the young trainer decided in a determined tone, and turned around to walk away.

"I don't think that's the best idea" Wells said in a dry, disappointed tone, though made no move to stop Louie.

"Yeah, that's the one. The killing curse. Pretty fucking stupid, really." Lo Wang reached up to pat the revolver holstered to his chest. "Ain't no magic spell that is going to help against a bullet or two. And I'd like to see Voldemort use his little curse before I put a bullet between his eyes."

"He's gone, idiot." Hoji chuckled. "Left right before you started bragging about killing a children's book character. Nice job, Mr Badass."

For the first time in a while, the hitman felt a tinge of embarrassment. "Shut the fuck up, or I'll let you find out what an incomplete Nobitsura Kage feels like."

"Alright, alright. I give in to your convincing argument." The gummy mask snarked one last time before going silent.

Moving on from that moment, Wang gave one last look towards the buffet and headed in the direction he'd come from. He searched the area for the Annas, trying to spot any familiar buildings. He didn't think he'd gone far enough for things to shift. "Hey, ladies! The fights over, so it's safe to come out! The giant monster turned into a buffet place if you want to get some food!"
