Jumping off from the "Personally-followed manga, under-the-radar for everyone else" thread, it's about time we give this nice series its due!

For those not familiar with the setup, here's the basic gist:

Laius, a warrior leading an adventuring party, just saw his younger sister get eaten by a dragon. All is not lost however: if he can somehow retrieve her before she gets fully digested (a process that can take up to 3 months), he can have her revived. The problem? In his party's haste to escape the dragon, they left most of their supplies behind. With little left aside from the armor and weapons he has, he jumps on a plan — with just the dungeoneering tools he already has, he'll live the various fauna in the dungeon. Two of his old partymates, Marsilla the elf wizard and Chikchak the Halfling rogue, think Laius is nuts, but join him in his quest (because they happen to LIKE his sister), and soon enough they're joined by a rather eccentric dwarf named Senshi, who brings his own unique take on "living off the dungeon"... by being able to prepare the monsters that are edible into palatable, even delicious meals.

It's a quirky, quirky series, that pokes fun of and puts in own spin on an otherwise straightforward dungeoneering adventure. It helps that Laius and his company are all loveable dorks, though Marsilla can be grating at times.

The most recent chapter though (14 as of this start) shows that, for all Marsilla's complaining, she does make sense, and that Laius, for all his fanboying about eating stuff, is still an experienced warrior, enough to point out to Senshi that the monsters are dangerous, regardless of whether they're tasty or not.

Dungeon Meshi arguably has the best worldbuilding I've seen in a manga, the way the author manages to make sense of the many common D&D (or Wizardry) monsters are ingenious. No wonder it's catching fire at Japan as well.

I've been enjoying this one. Good art and writing, and the way it makes something sane out of the basic Wizardry setup is fascinating

This manga needs a TV Tropes page. Anyone want to help?

And we have a new chapter. Well, it looks like we're going to have another recurring adventuring party (its the guys from the Treasure Bug chapter) if only to provide contrast to how a supposedly ill-equipped party like Laius' is succeeding in a dungeon, and how a supposedly competent one is utterly failing at it. XD

But man, Chikchak is right. Laius, dude, there are some lines one should NOT cross. Or eat.

Marsilla's smile is hard to counter though admittedly. :P

Well, Laius's party is clearly highly-experienced and knowledgeable about the dungeon and its monsters. On the other hand, all the other party has going for it is optimism.

It's weird how the romanizations keep changing despite it being worked on by a single group

And, yeah, Laius can be kind of creepy

The comments at Batoto about it were funny, but yeah, someone has to draw a line for Laius, because if he doesn't focus, their goal might not be "Save the sister in the dragon" but "Eat the dragon (with sister inside)". O_o

Welp, we got the chapter spoilers early it seems.

The encounter for this chapter is water elementals, though the meal itself is made from the leftover kelpie meat.

The encounter in the chapter kind of points to how lucky Laius and co. have been with their dungeon delve so far. I mean, sure it also owes partly to experience, but they're four levels down without a Healer, and ANY injury can more or less stop them cold. And that's exactly what happened in this chapter.

Looks like we might get a chance of the Amazon from chapter 1 rejoining them though.

And another chapter, and yet another one that shows how much thought the author puts into making semi-plausible dungeon ecosystems. Though even I'd be puzzled how to fit a freaking kraken into an isolated lake-like environment...

Anyway, yeah, Laius' obsession with food finally catches up with him. Shows how you shouldn't eat stuff without cooking them first! XD

Oh, and Marcille's "no stop nooo" faces are back with a vengeance. "I can't believe I walked into that," indeed.

This is something I wish someone would make a video game about. A classic dungeon-delving setting with a really in-depth ingredients and cooking system. Dragon's Crown scratched that itch somewhat with how you can cook between dungeons using ingredients obtained from bosses, but it was a very simplistic system.

Gotta love Laius though. It's like he's been repressing this urge his entire life, and now he finally has the opportunity to indulge it. He always gets that serial killer expression on his face whenever there's some new monster that he can try to eat.

Really fun series and certainly inspiring for a DM of games in this setting. Gives me a lot of ideas on how to encourage my players to stop simply chowing down on rations and enjoy the setting. Very creative stuff here, and funny to boot.

I'm pretty sure the concept of Law having limits was a translation error. -Wanderlustwarrior

And a new chapter, with a bit of background on Marcille and how she got to know about Laius' sister Farlyn. And yes, the two siblings are REALLY not alike at all, aside from apparently eating stuff. :P

The way Farlyn walked around with her eyes closed made me wonder at times if she was blind, because her personality doesn't match the archetype that USUALLY has their eyes closed all the time. :P

Absolutely awesome. Funny without getting stupid. The writer clearly puts a lot of effort in getting the cooking right. Plus really thought-out world building.

I also like that the whole party gets their chance to shine equally. For a while Senshi was very much "Mr Always Right", so the chapter with Anne served well to establish that he can make mistakes too.

Definitely a keeper. It should have its own page here.

The latest chapter has been scanned, meaning we're now caught up with the Japanese raws and thus will have to wait a month for every new chapter.

Also, Laius being a jerk. Who wants to eat livers all day long?

New characters! And they're not gone at the end of the chapter, even

And some interesting world-building that seems likely to be relevant to the whatever is going on with the dungeon

Also, Laius is a dumbass

Also, more worldbuilding, particularly why raising the dead is so convenient in the dungeon.

That said, man, the other party's employer is a jerk. Sure he'll heal you, but only because he used you as a meat shield first!

Everything about this Manga is BEYOND charming. The character development and worldbuilding are top-notch, the spreads and ingredients are drawn with painstaking amounts of care, 99% of the cooking is spot on.

The character development is what's getting to me the most. True Companions like friggin' WHOA up in here.

Marsilla making soap for Senshi put the BIGGEST freakin' smile on my face, especially his response to it and Marsilla's "O.. Okay!" with surprised joy on her face. Chilchack's Mimic adventure and the stuff he pulls off in there. Laius correctly deducing the nature of Living Armor. Senshi admitting at various points he still has a lot to learn or thanks party members.

Just... DAMN. They feel like a cohesive, full-on group with properly display emotions and everything, I'm so, SO impressed with it all. I kinda wish it were a weekly, but I feel it might end up rushed in the story and visuals if that were the case.

ALSO MARSILLA PLAYING WATER WALK GOLF ON SENSHI'S ADVICE WAS THE COOLEST GODDAMN THING

Oh yeah, that's everyone's favorite dishes? I'd LOVE to try the Giant Scorpion and Walking Mushroom Hot Pot, good lord. The Mandrake and Basilisk Omelette also sounds delicious, as well as Roast Basilisk... ugh, so hungry.
