Player characters all live in the same city when one day a massive barrier surrounds the city and areas around it, cutting them off from the outside world. Within five hours of the barrier appearing strange creatures appear within the barrier and begin attacking humans without mercy. An hour after the monsters start attacking, all monitors other then phones begin playing a message delivered by a human figure with a body made of shifting colors. The message is that anyone who lives in the city is now under the rule of the Old Gods, and anyone attempt to survive the new world will be met with death.

Twenty minutes after the message airs the characters receive a mysterious message on their phone telling them about an amazing new app offered by Mephistopheles Inc. Once downloaded the app with make the following offer; lease your soul to the company and they will provide you with power one could use to fight back and survive. The organization will hold onto your soul and send various missions through the app to help you pay off the debt of your new power, along with offering new add ons to the policy to help make the holder more likely to survive. If the user dies or are unable to make your payment by the end of the day their soul is forfeit, and soon after their body will die.

How it plays: Players would make their character sheets, but instead of deciding on their powers or weapons they would be crafted based off the kind of person they were before making the contract. A very timid person might receive the power to call in another fighter. A smart person might get a book of spells. A strong person a weapon. Or it could be quite a bit more complicated. Each player will start out with at least three items from their initial loan, but could purchase more.

The game would be divided into a day, afternoon, night cycle with jobs being offered throughout the day. Jobs are optional, but without them your character won't have enough money at the end of the day to pay off their loan, and that means death. Of course overdoing it on jobs might mean your character getting hurt, or not getting food.

Players could choose to team up or take solo missions, but solo would carry certain negatives, such as facing creatures that might be too hard, or something along those lines. But teaming up means sharing rewards.

Assuming the Old Gods are supposed to be Eldritch Abominations, can I play as a guy serving them, or maybe even some kind of humanoid avatar to one?

The Old God's may or may not be the same ones known by Lovecraft, don't want to spoil it. But to answer the question asked it would be a bit against the point of survival if one player worked for the God's without having to worry. That seems more like a character the GM would use.
