Current picture shows the "general" but not the "failure" .

Suggested alternative from The Life And Times Of Scrooge Mc Duck:

Lateral change for me...I guess it comes down to whether you like a pic or a pic+caption. Here's the suggestion with some cropping.

I prefer the current image. Among other things about that battle plan, no competent general would incorporate a "Boom!" effect bubble.

The current image does rely considerably on its caption, though.

I'll vote for the OP, but only because the details come out just slightly better at wiki size. The "Boom" bubble and the stick figures in the Futurama one are almost unnoticeable.

[up]I agree. Even if the details of the current image is more visible, it doesn't really say much about the guy's incompetency.

OP for me.

I was unsure as to what I like better. The OP suggestion conveyed it clearer, so I'll go for that.

The suggestion doesn't seem like a 'general' or even a leader.

[up]Well, he led an army, so it shows general. Even if his "troops" are made up of conscripts instead of professional soldiers.

I see no army in the picture let alone him leading it, the joke in the bubble seems to imply that the army failed him and ran away.

It's not just the speech bubble. The fallen weapons and the dust cloud and the fact that he's looking behind him more than shows that he had an army, but he's too incompetent as a general that they all abandoned him.

I think it's better without the speech bubble.

^ Comparing the two, I'll agree with that. The only thing that bugs me is that his face is miscolored (it should be white), but we might be able to fix that.

Pretty wide, I must say. Are we sure there is no narrower way of illustrating it?

I think the suggestion is a clear improvement, even if it's not that clear. The "boom" tells me more about the work's tone than his competence.

rodney's version, with the face color fixed, works best for me overall.

I think 14 is a major improvement on the coloring. Not only is the face corrected, it improves the clarity of the whole scene. The first is probably an original print that was saddled with a lazy coloring department.

Here's Rodney's formatting with those improved colors:

"That's Sir Eider McDuck, who was felled during a Saxon siege in 946! His serfs deserted, because he only paid 30 copper pieces per hour—for the lot of them!"

Agreed, better than the Futurama one.
