Plus they did that thing in Rogue One with CGI Leia that was really good.
Define "really good". I was cringing the entire time. And that's not getting into the whole "using CGI to resurrect the dead" thing.
but HOW?Well they got the Cushing estate's permission.
Carrie Fisher was Princess Leia for just shy of 40 years, while William Hartnell hadn't been the Doctor for 17 when The Five Doctors came out. He'd also been dead for eight years at that time, whereas Fisher's been gone for less than two months.
Plus any version of the Doctor gets into a whole weird area, what with the whole regeneration thing. Anyway, I can understand people who think it's simply too soon, or who would prefer to simply retire the character out of respect to Fisher.
And they already said they wouldn't do a CGI recreation in any case.

I really liked CGI Leia and CGI Tarkin in Rogue One. But I'll agree that using CGI to resurrect Carrie Fisher feels like it would be in poor taste.

I'm fine with whatever they decide to do; they're in the middle of a massive "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. Seems unfair to hold any course of action (yes, even one that's way worse than the best possible one) against them when they don't have any good options.
Ceterum censeo Morbillivirum esse eradicandum.I find myself missing Carrie Fisher a lot these days. :(
Yeah, me too, sorta.
RE: Fischer and Leia: If this is a problem, then why did they bother getting Tarkin into Rogue One's plot at all?
Because Peter Cushing had been dead for decades and they explicitly got the consent of his family. For Carrie it would be a horrible case of Too Soon.
According to Wikipedia, Cushing liked being in Star Wars and would've been glad to return in his lifetime if not the fact that Tarkin was explodead.

I would've liked that too (Peter Cushing coming back, I mean, not CGI Leia). Sort of wish they would've brought back Wayne Pygram as Tarkin, though.

Tarkin and Leia were ultimately novelties to help connect the film to ANH. While the CG was top notch, it was still CG and used sparingly. Expecting a movie to use CG to recreate a human actor to actually carry an important part of a movie among regular actors is still beyond the technology (and may never quite reach it). Avatar cheated that somewhat by minimizing the interactions between the CG characters and live action actors, so it was really more of a half live action / half animated movie, along with alien faces helped to minimize the Uncanny Valley.
I mean, Tarkin might have been a connecting gimmick, but he was in the movie a lot. He wasn't exactly a five-second cameo like CGI Leia.

They did a good job, but he still uncannied me out quite a bit.
Also I was kind of shocked at how tall he is. Sharing all those scenes with Vader (who is huge, David Prowse is 6'6") and Leia (who is tiny, Carrie Fisher is 5'1") made me think of him as being on the lower side of average height (Cushing himself was 6'0", so not really) but Tarkin just seems to tower over everyone in R1.

I actually didn't even realize he was CGI until after I saw the film, when I learned from others that he's been dead for years. I wonder how much of the uncanny valley effect is because of people subconsciously knowing that it would be impossible for Peter Cushing to be standing there.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.You didn't know that Peter Cushing was dead?
Oh God! Natural light!I'm just disappointed he wasn't wearing bunny slippers.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Even if he weren't, it's odd to not wonder why he hadn't aged in forty years.
Maybe Christopher Lee turned him.
...I made myself sad.
I don't see what's so bad about recasting. They did it with William Hartnell in The Five Doctors.
but HOW?
