As some of you might have noticed, the issue of the vast increase of refugees making their way to Europe has been raised quite a few times in different threads, and considering the attention this crisis receives in the media, I thought it would be time for its' own thread.

The situation:

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of people trying to reach Europe and claim Asylum. Any estimation currently made is likely to go up in the following week, but it seems to become the biggest European refugee crisis since 1945.

And while the Syrian refugees are making the most headlines, they are far from the only ones. There are people from Africa, with tiny Eritrea (only 6.000.000 inhabitans) sending an extraordinary number of refugees due to the brutal nature of its' authoritarian government. Furthermore many people from the Balkans who are not EU-citizens are hoping for a better life in the EU and are also trying to emigrate.

Currently some European countries are more affected than others, mostly those who are serving as "transit country" and those countries who are eventually the destination for the refugees.

So far the EU has struggled to find a common approach to the crisis, which is not surprising if one considers how different the crisis is perceived depending in which country you live.

So far every country has more or less tried to deal with the problem on their own, the consequences are than often faced by other countries. For example Germany's decision to suspend the Dublin agreemen regarding Syrian refugees (accroding to which refugees have to register in the European country they first enter) on practical reasons annoys the government of Hungary, because that supposedly attracts even more refugees coming to Hungary whl trying to reach Germany.

So things are complicated and considering how the situation looks e.g. in the Middle East, it doesn't seem likely that the flow of refugees will decrease any time soon. So, what is your opinion regarding this matter?

Nah, just a lock will suffice. Only moderators can lock or delete.
