Adventures in Internetlandia

Author Note: This forum adventure takes place in the world of this thread. You should definitely read through and watchlist that thread for not-mentioned-yet and not-mentioned-at-all exposition.

Your name is Jeffery Marks and you have no idea where you are, or how you got here. The last thing you remember you were watching some stupid YouTube video. You seem to be sprawled on a dark, dusty ground. You look up.

You see an ornately carved city gate with the Facebook logo painted on the top.

"What the fuck..."

This is a forum adventure where people give commands, not a roleplay forum game. Sorry i didn't make that clear in the OP.

Still wrong.

He's already awake and he's already reacted. However, if you do want more specifics about the city, you can still say:

Better, but remember: Smartie's running the game so it's her job to describe what you see and what you hear. Also, all actions would be best written as commands rather than narrative.

Like so:

See? Sorry if I'm sounding nitpicky, that's just how these text adventures work.

You hesitantly greet the guard, "Um... hello?"
He replies excitedly "Oh, hi! This is my first day as a sign-in! Do you like the armour? ...Uh, I mean, name and password, sir."
You are confused for a second, but you guess this makes just as much sense as the existence of a Facebook city in the first place. "I... I don't think I've been here before." you answer.
"Oh, okay! Here's the registration form!"
He hands you a form with slots for many different types of personal information.

I only just remembered this adventure exists. No time like the present!

You examine the form. There is a line to write your name, one to write your "Contact Address", one for a password, one to write your birth date, and one to select your gender. After the date of birth line, it also includes "Home-date of Arrival for Newcomers", and you have absolutely no idea what that is. The guard seems to be waiting for you to do something.

You ask the guard, "Um, can I see the terms and conditions before I enter?"

The guard replies "Huh? Nobody ever asks for those! But okay, then!" He reaches into a hole in the wall to grab them, but as he hands the long scroll to you he realizes something. "You're a Newcomer, aren't you?" He makes an excited noise.

"A— a Newcomer?" you repeat, mirroring the audible capitalization of the guard's remark.

The guard quickly responds, "Yes, a Newcomer! Someone who only just arrived to Internetlandia from another dimension! There hasn't been one of those in decades!" The guard seems to be extremely happy that he's actually getting to be a source of exposition.

"Yeah, I—I am one of those." you say.

"Oh boy! I've never seen a Newcomer before! Wait... since you only just got here, you wouldn't have a Contact Address! I'll call a Search Wizard to get you one right away!" The guard runs off into the city.

You decide to actually read the Terms now. None of the sketchy possibilities are present- things you say or show while within the Facebook Empire's cities still belong to the person who said or showed it, there are no extra costs to live in a Facebook Empire city as opposed to any other city, and so on. You decide that this is OK, 'though it's still fucking weird that the internet is a world.

So am I OK at writing dialogue? By the way, watchlist the worldbuilding thread to get the full All There in the Manual level of exposition- for example, Newcomers' consciousnesses are split at the point of Arrival, so one half continues to live their normal life while the other explores Internetlandia.

The guard has left. You're all by yourself outside the gate, which is locked. I don't think that would be possible. Besides, you're not stupid. From context, you're pretty sure "Internetlandia" is the name of this world.

You decide to walk around a bit before the guard comes back. You don't want to get lost in the empty wasteland, so you start following the edge of the city's wall. Holy shit this wall is long- it stretches as far as the eye can see. It's probably one of the biggest cities in "Internetlandia" as that guard called this world. Wow, whoever named this place must have been really uncreative.^AN Take That!, OP of the Worldbuilding thread! You walk along for a while. Yeah, you're getting nowhere. You suppose you should go back now. You return to the gate.

You can't see much above the tall wall, but there are a few buildings within view that jut up taller than it. You wonder what pages those are.

The door swings open. You stumble backwards, surprised by the sudden movement. The same guard from earlier is there. He says "OK, good news, we can take you in just long enough to get you to the city's Intersite Travel Hub so you can go and get a Contact Address. After that, come back here and sign up with it, 'kay?"

You say "Okay." The guard opens the gate and guides you through the streets, half walking half skipping. He leads you to a building that looks like it's made of marble, and he opens the door for you. You step inside. When you look around, you see many people, mostly old, bound to the walls with translucent energy- what is this? the fantasy Matrix?

There are just as many people talking with them, and occasionally a (free) person disappears in a burst of the same energy, but it's just as common for one to appear on one of the short, round blocks scattered throughout. The guard says "Come on! Ask one of the Search Wizards! What are you waiting for?"

You walk over to one of the old men who has nobody talking to him at the moment and ask him "Uh, hi. I don't have a Contact Address (and really I don't know what one is), but I want to sign up here. Wh—where can I get one?"

He replies "Step onto this panel and you will soon be at the place to sign up for one."

You step onto the panel and you see your body disappearing as you hear a strange noise get higher—

You are now on a similar panel in a building that looks like a busy post office. You push open the glass door (looks like it only opens from the inside. Huh, probably to prevent Tele-Frag) and look around the building. Yup, totally a busy post office- annoying families and all.
