I think you need to find either an image of the person putting on the pumpkin or one of the pumpkin latching onto him. At the moment, it just looks like the pumpkin is the person's head (since it has a face).
Goddammit, I was hoping to find a good screenshot of the voodoo mask from Friday The13th The Series, since it produces a snake from its mouth and is thus a nice visual representation, but the one I found on Google Images unfortunately isn't that good

This just makes me more confused, because there's a kid wearing a pumpkin mask as well but their outfit doesn't match the dying guy's.

What about this composite of one of the deadly masks from Halloween III: Season of the Witch? The way the wearer is clutching it in vain to take it off should make it clear that it's the mask itself that is harmful.
