In a nutshell: its being misused, but the misuse is tropeworthy and has no trope, and the current definition seems Too Rare To Trope.

Currently the definition is that groups of foes that look alike take steps not to get one another confused.

The misuse makes up most of the examples and simply seems far more tropable: When you have say, a Five Bad Band to your Five-Man Band, or a recurring pack of Psycho Rangers to your power rangers, each team member has a (not always identical or even similar) match that they almost always get paired against, sometimes by Contrived Coincidence.

I'd say just ditch the old useless definition and use what its already being used as.
