Nice to see Donkey Kong won't be alone this time around.

Also, don't want to be bossy, but we should probably shorten the title to just "Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games". How do you notify an administrator to change the title in a thread?

I've never understood why Sega and Nintendo decided to put their two biggest franchises in a game about real life Olympics. Or why they thought that either one of those franchises should be in a game about the Olympics. I guess you could say that Mario has done some sports games before but not one based on a real life sporting event. The closest to that would be that NBA game on Gamecube but even than that was more of a bonus thing for the game, not a full out Mario sports game.

I'm still perplexed as to why they haven't just released a game that's entirely made up of dream events yet. Those are the most enjoyable parts anyways.

If they aren't going to do a proper crossover at this point, they might as well not bother and just make Colors HD, or something.

From what I've read, it was because they couldn't think of a way to consolidate the two radically different types of gameplay and Sega had the rights to do Olypics stuff.

I also read that Mario was supposed to be the Wii exclusive cameo character in the first Sonic/Sega racing game but they didn't want to remind people of the Mario Kart series. Since Racing Transformed was the last Sonic game I enjoyed, that's profoundly sad to me.

And it's been like eight years by now.

I say they should either stop half-assing a minigame collection and make what people would actually like to see, or just not bother at all anymore.

It was more to the general question of "why did they do olympics instead of a platformer?" I don't like it either, I was sick of Mario sport spinoffs when the first one came out, and now that we're on like the 4th or 5th one of these the mild novelty of seeing Sonic and Mario characters no longer does it. Especially when they start drawing from the terrible tier Sonic characters, like Silver and Zazz.

SEGA and Nintendo have discussed the idea of a crossover platformer. It didn't work out.

These characters come from two totally different backgrounds, and have completely different worlds. If you do any kind of collaboration, you can’t just get them to run on one of the Sonic stages or vice versa. You have to create something from scratch, a neutral location. Nintendo and SEGA never managed to agree on just where or what kind of universe we could set a Mario and Sonic adventure in.

And I agree on this. Crash and Spyro did it, and it was shit.

Yeah they seem to be running out of characters to have in their Olympics.

I thought their was a reason why their hasn't been one.

But I don't see why they choose to have them in the Olympics and why they're still continuing these games as they haven't been doing well financially,IIRC.

I really don't see why the game needed a thread in the first place, anyway. We already have a wii u, Sonic, and Mario thread and these games aren't popular or hyped up in the first place to really get people talking about them.

I don't see any reason why it shouldn't have one. Neither the Sonic, Mario or especially the Wii-U pages are specifically about it, and as a spin-off it's unlikely to get much specific play in either of the former threads.

I'm actually surprised there isn't a Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games General thread already.

But what is their to discuss? Their isn't that much to really talk about since it's a thread focusing on one party game in a series of games that isn't really that popular to begin with or has anything really that could make anyone want to talk about it.

The game itself. Gameplay. Music - music especially. Development. It's future. It's past. Pretty much everything every other game series has worth talking about, actually.

Getting threads here is in no way shape or form a notability contest, and just because you don't think the game isn't important enough to talk about doesn't mean it doesn't have things worth talking about.

Good point. Just because we have news of an new entry of an unpopular franchise doesn't mean that it'll be an shitpoast about an presumably shit game.

There's nothing really stopping us from talking about the entire Olympics series. The series doesn't have a General thread, after all. We could just make this one that thread.

I'm currently debating on creating an General thread about the franchise. But that would be animal cruelty at this point◊

To be fair, the op is not much of one and we could use a better opening post for a general thread. Also, it is looking like a complaint thread derail is brewing, so if we want to keep this one up, let's cut that issue before continuing(as in don't continue the derail. No more, no less. I can very much understand some disliking this series because they want a platformer. That's a fair point. I still think it's a neat series, though).

I do enjoy these games, and one of my favorite characters, Rouge, is back. I could be more happy. I hope we get at least one more Mario character, though. Maybe someone from the Mario rpg's? I doubt anyone from Super Mario RPG due to rights related to Square Enix, but Paper Mario/Mario & Luigi guys should be easier. Then again, I'd love to see Dr. Mario appear in some form. Even if only a cameo as the doctor there in case of accidents(which realistically happen at the Olympics). I'm glad Diddy Kong is there. Is Bowser Jr. among the series yet? He's a good candidate, imo.

Bowser Jr. is playable in the 2010 Winter Olympic games.

Beats me.

I don't really hate the games. Okay I hated the first one but I thought the one after it was pretty fun. But I really wished they did more with a crossover with two iconic gaming franchises than a Olympic party game collection.
