Las Tierras Rojas is a ridiculous name.

It was the name the Fellowship of St. Giles gave to the territory controlled by the Red Court of Vampires - a territory roughly spanning Argentina, Mexico and Peru. Before, its supernatural scene was dominated by vampires. People would disappear in the night, never to be found. Strange murders would take place, usually attributed to cartel violence. Vampires openly bribed politicians in the name of shaping this region to its whims.

Now? Now things are far worse.

I was dispatched here from Edinburgh the morning after what is locally known as the Red Night, or the Night of Bad Dreams. The night after the Red Court vanished overnight, vanquished by a bloodline curse so powerful it ripped every vampire apart with no regard for geography. A reckoning for the Red Court at the hands of the man who’d started the war.

There’s been no sign of Warden Dresden since the Red Night. While the Council ostensibly sent us here to attempt to identify him and the unknown practitioners who destroyed Chichen Itza, that’s mostly a coverup. We’re here to survey the extent of the power source that’s dwelling underneath Chichen Itza. The White Council is fighting a shadow war, and we don’t have the manpower to fight it effectively.

Things are deteriorating rapidly. The cartels and the police are all but in open war. Revolutions grip the streets. Innocent people still go missing, or worse, they’re found in a gruesome state. It’s all going straight to hell too fast for anyone to understand. The Fellowship says there's hope for this region now, but I don't see it.

We need help. We dearly, dearly need help.

- From the desk of Mitchel Blanchard, Wizard of the White Council. Three weeks after the Red Night.

Hello and welcome to Unholy Ground, a play-by-post campaign for the Dresden Files roleplaying game. As you may have cleverly surmised from the opening blurb, this campaign takes place in Central and South America roughly a month after the events of Changes. As such, it will contain spoilers for that book and all the previous Dresden Files novels.

Your characters will be thrown into a part of the world that is suffering, both on the mortal and supernatural side. As the Red Court crumbled, the power structures they created collapsed, sparking revolutions and martial law across the mortal world. The destruction of the Red Court and the power they left behind, meanwhile, was buried in the ley-line nexus beneath Chichen Itza, turning it into a supernatural WMD - with everyone wanting to claim ownership of the item.

This is where you come in. Whatever faction you represent, whether native to the region or brought in by the sweeping changes left in the wake of the Red Night, has an interest in the goings-on of Chichen Itza and the surrounding area. Whether benevolent, malevolent or self-interested, you’re swept up all the same.

But before we get started on the adventure, we need characters to populate the world! This is the character creation tool we’ll be using for this game. Note that while this is a play-by-post, it does use the rules from the Dresden Files RPG, so a degree of OOC communication will be required. And that, as logically follows, this is probably more interesting to people who already have experience with the setting.

Resources.

For those of you who might want an easier way to create a character, here is a link to a character creator specifically designed for the Dresden Files RPG. It’s a little buggy, but it works. It also covers some things that the high-level guide doesn’t, like selecting elements for your wizard. It also automatically calculates your stress levels depending on your skills, and has a more in-depth explanation of the various skills.

For those of you who might want to play spellcasters or have very little knowledge of how Fate (whether it’s the Dresden Files RPG or not) works, this is a cheat sheet for how to play the RPG. Otherwise, just ask your Most Benevolent Game Master.
