I imagine they have the potential to be good, though writing one successfully sounds like the most difficult thing ever. It's essentially the purest form of a Bottle Episode—just a bunch of characters sitting on a beach for over a month relying solely on dialogue to carry the story. And unlike actual Survivor, you can't intersperse it with visuals and challenges.
There's also the issue of point-of-view. You can't write the story from the POV of only a few characters, it has to be completely objective. But writing a story following 16-20 people relatively equally and objectively is ridiculously difficult to do well. There's a reason why stories usually only have one protagonist.
Survivor fanfics have potential, but I have no idea how you would write one, and I imagine they might be one of the hardest story styles to write well.
There are a lot of Survivor fics.
They don't seem to be very popular, outside of a few fandoms. Why is that? How do you feel about fanfiction parodies of Survivor? Perfect opportunity for crossovers.
