I'm in the beginning stages of adapting a Greek tragedy into a post-apocalyptic story and a significant part of the story involves a oracle saying a prophecy that eventually comes true.

I was thinking a way I could translate it into the "modern-day" would have the oracle be a person with schizophrenia who begins having symptoms again due to the fact that it's a bit difficult to get medication and therapy After the End.

The fact some Word Salad he gives happens to be proven true isn't an enormous part of his characterization and the whole prophecy is treated as Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane.

I'm planning on doing my very best to ensure he's a well rounded character outside of his mental illness (and that it's portrayed in an accurate fashion)

Do you think people would have a huge problem with this?

I have to say yes, this could be construed as offensive, in a "glorifying/romanticizing mental illness" sort of way. Schizophrenia is a real condition, and it doesn't let people see the future.

I'm depressive, apparently developing into manic-depression, schizoaffective and obsessive-compulsive.

I have no problem with the Mad Oracle trope. I even love it. What I don't like is people insisting that I don't grok how systemic oppression works because I don't personally abhor that trope. When it suits some United Front of Intersectional Social Justice, my perspective is valuable; when it doesn't, I'm crazy-stupid-crazy (but not with those specific words, oh no.)

Basically: I can tell you if it offends me after the thing is actually written, Muse, and not before. tongue

Could get insensitive pretty quickly. If you do add it though I wouldn't be too keen to directly identify it as schizophrenia. Part of Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane is uncertainty and I think it would be better for the story if it isn't really elaborated on what exactly is wrong (or not!) with him. It is After the End you say so even making an accurate diagnosis would probably be difficult as psychology isn't a very pressing survival skill.

Would probably also help in avoiding Unfortunate Implications.

Just my two cents though.
